REST…IN THE LORD! IT’S ABOUT GOD!
God’s Story is all about HIM! We cannot make that point any clearer as we read, with this passion to know more about HIM each day. His Story is about His power, unconditional love, grace, mercy, protection, healing, and provision while “setting the stage” for the coming of His Son, Jesus Christ, our LORD. Our Redeemer.
With these thoughts in mind, we are excited, us as we think about the manna that fell from heaven each morning, fresh as the dew, NEW every day as the mercies of God are NEW each day for us! It’s about GOD providing for us…DAILY!
There is a reason the people were to REST on the seventh day. A double portion of manna was sent on the sixth day so the people didn’t even have to gather food on the seventh. THIS day was to be set aside for rest and to think about the blessings and provision and power of their God. God’s people questioned it with “WHY?” Why is there more food on the sixth and no food on the seventh?
“The LORD has appointed tomorrow as a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. On this day we will rest from our normal daily tasks.” Exodus 16, NLT
BUT some of God’s people went out anyway to collect food on the Seventh day. There was none. “How long will these people refuse to obey my commands and instructions?” the LORD asked Moses. “Do they not realize that I have given them the seventh day, the Sabbath, as a day of rest?”
Maybe, just maybe the LORD, God of Heaven is asking us the same question this morning. WHY are you not taking a Sabbath to rest, and in the rest think about ME? Ouch.
Yes, the world, by example through behavior believes in working, non stop around the clock. There is little reverence for a “Sabbath”, one day a week to gather for worship of our LORD.
His Story is all about Him. What will we do about Him? Is God first in our lives? And then the rest of life follows…? I used to work in a store that was open for quite a few hours each day, including Sundays, of course. Many of the workers are now expected to work on Thanksgiving DAY, even taking that day from their families. Some are refusing for reasons of family and that is noble. It’s part of the reason I quit this second job. The dollars were not worth time away, working at odd hours, never knowing when or if I could be with family. But what about GOD? And our time with HIM?
God is not just part of our lives. He IS our life, in all parts of it! Put Him first, obey His commands and then see what comes next. We will be glad we did! We might not be able to change the world’s view of thinking, but we can begin to change our view back to a Biblical view of believing and behaving. My prayer for all of us, In JESUS Name, Amen.
