No one has ever claimed that sheep were the smartest animals on earth. A few years ago, in a village in Turkey, they lived up to their not-so-bright reputation. One sheep wandered away from the flock to the edge of a nearby cliff, and he decided it would be great fun to jump off.
Of course, it was the last thing he ever did. Suddenly, all the sheep decided to play “follow the leader” and 1,500 sheep leaped off that same cliff to the rocks below, creating the world’s largest sweater at the bottom of the valley below. (Picturing this cracks me up, still.)
Actually, it was no joking matter. The town lost more than $100,000 in the great sheep leap that day.
It’s not an accident that over and over the Bible compares we humans to sheep. Why? Because we tend to follow where the crowd is going, just like sheep, no matter what that may cost us. Let’s face it. There’s actually peer pressure at every age and stage in our lives, isn’t there?
We are going to continue camping out in Romans 12 so we can better LIVE IT…now, from the Message:
“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you; Take your everyday, ordinary life–your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around-life and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.”
“Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.” Romans 12, The Message
Where do you want to be? At the bottom of the cliff or….
