Bad attitudes stem from love of self. Selfishness breeds envy, pride, misplaced fear and jealously. In Cain’s case, it led to death…of his own brother. God asks, “Where is your brother?” after Cain murders him. This reminds us of what God asked Adam, the first generation to turn their back on God and take the first bite of sin, “Where are you?” as He walked through His once perfectly created world.
Cain, the farmer, is punished by God. The land he worked so hard with is taken away. Who Cain thought he was, is taken away from him. “You are hereby banished from the ground you have defiled with your brother’s blood. No longer will it yield abundant crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless fugitive on the earth, constantly wandering from place to place.” Genesis 4:11-12, NLT
No farm. No family. Banished. But protected. He is still God’s creation. His succeeding generations produce inventors and craftsmen. But he is set apart from his original family.
Our sin. We think only affects us. Nope. It affects and concerns everyone around us. If we really thought about the consequences of sin, maybe there would be less sin. But alas, sin is self. And Self seems to take precedence over all our thinking.
Oh, Lord, give us wisdom, insight and understanding. Thank you for salvation from self and sin. We are a helpless, hopeless people without Christ and the work on the Cross for our sin. Thank you for unconditional love, grace and mercy, the One and Only way back to you. In Jesus Name, and by the power of His shed blood, we pray, Amen.
