It seems that is the first question people as of a person struggling, in trouble or just depressed. “How long has it been?” We go to a doctor with an ailment and he asks, “How long has it been?” I am stuck on this question as I read the “tail end” of God’s story of Cain and how He dealt with him and his descendants to the last verses that bring us back to Adam.
“Adam slept with his wife again, and she gave brith to another son. she named him Seth, for she said, ‘God has granted me another son in place of Abel, the one Cain killed.’ When Seth grew up he had a son and named him Enosh. It was during his lifetime that people first began to worship the LORD.” Genesis 4:25-26, NLT
STOP! I was wondering why it took so long to begin to worship the LORD?! This is the first time it is mentioned. God created the world and the people in it…and it wasn’t until Enosh’s generation that took the time to worship, to thank Him and give him praise?
How long has it been for us? Do we live a life of worship, always grateful, always thinking of God first? How long has it been since we gave our whole heart, mind and soul over to Him to use as He sees appropriate for His Kingdom? How long has it been since you just took the time to chat with Him? How long has it been since you were still before God and just listened?
STOP! Do it now. BE with Him now. Nothing is more important. Everything will change in your thinking, your attitude and your behaving. It does for me. This is worship.
How long has it been?
I think of the old, old song my parents sang as a quartet with my aunt and uncle, (The Kellerby Quartet), “How long has it been?” and I weep a little, in joy, for their lives and remembering. My mom went to be with the Lord on this day in 2009. My aunt and uncle went long before her. My dad lives with me and is a constant reminder. Maybe that is why I am reminded to never give up on my chats with my Lord each morning. He is life to me. This is worship.

How long has it been since you talked with the Lord

How long since you prayed?
How long since you stayed on your knees till the light shone through?
How long has it been since your mind felt at ease?

How long has it been since you knew that he cared for you?
How long has it been since you knelt by your bed
And prayed to the Lord up in heaven?
How long since you knew that he’d answer you
And would keep you the long night through?
How long has it been since you woke with the dawn
And felt this day is worth living?
Can you call him your friend?
How long has it been since you knew that he cared for you?..
