The Good News!
We come to the table to eat and drink and be filled with the meaning of the “last Passover supper” Jesus will share with his followers. The Passover meal is steeped in tradition, meaning and significance for the Jews (and now for all of us!) who were “passed over” from persecution and death, years earlier by the enemy who held them captive as slaves, by smearing the blood of a first choice lamb over the door of their homes. If they obeyed God in His specific directives, they were saved.
The thought occurs to me this morning that the Lamb of God among them, Jesus, the Christ, also protected his own from the enemy as he was taken to be crucified for their sins and ours. The enemy comes to take only Jesus, the leader. His followers ran and were protected from harm. The enemy could have taken them all out and killed them. But that was not God’s plan. The Lamb of God was sacrificed and His blood, His teachings, His perfect love, mercy and grace was smeared on their very hearts, minds and souls and they were passed over from harm…just as Jesus said they would. All except the betrayer, Judas, who did not believe.
“During my time here, I protected them by the power of the name you gave me. I guarded them so that not one was lost, except the one headed for destruction, as the Scriptures foretold.” –Jesus
(John 17:12, NLT in his prayer for his disciples.)
It is good for us to see, hear, taste, feel and touch the words and meaning of the following passage. Catch the significance for us today and be blessed!
Mark 14, The Message
“This Is My Body”
22 In the course of their meal, having taken and blessed the bread, he broke it and gave it to them. Then he said,
Take, this is my body.
23-24 Taking the chalice, he gave it to them, thanking God, and they all drank from it. He said,
This is my blood,
God’s new covenant,
Poured out for many people.
25 “I’ll not be drinking wine again until the new day when I drink it in the kingdom of God.”
26 They sang a hymn and then went directly to Mount Olives.
Dear Heavenly Father, All I can say is thank you! I feel like singing the age old hymn and rejoicing in our salvation by the blood of Lamb this morning. You are on my mind. You are in my heart. You are in charge of my soul. Thank you, Lord, thank you! Go with us this day. In Jesus Name, Amen
And they sang a hymn…
Would you be free from your burden of sin?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful power in the blood.
There is power, power, wonder-working power,
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder-working power,
In the precious blood of the Lamb…
