Romans–Passionate Christian Theology
Why funerals or memorials? It is a time where a past life is displayed, then laid to rest! We don’t stay at the parlor or church. We move on, with life, until we see Jesus. And what kind of life do we choose? Do we just wait to die, living in the past, with the past, doing the same things over and over, compelled to do things all on our own? OR could we spend each day with expectant anticipation of what God will do next in and through us? Can we bury the past, (our old lives before Christ), and really embrace what God has for us…a resurrected life with Him? Only two choices. Choose well.
Romans 8, The Message
“What’s next, Papa?”
It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s!
12-14 So don’t you see that we don’t owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There’s nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go!
15-17 This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!
What do we learn?
–Walking dead is no fun and excruciatingly difficult!
–God resurrects the dead in us and brings us alive with the SAME power He used to raise Jesus from death! Wow! So leave the funeral of our past and really LIVE!
–God loves us that much.
–God also loves taking us with Him on adventures that are beyond our comprehension or imaginations!
–Live expectantly!
Dear Heavenly Father, THANK YOU! Thank you for resurrecting the walking dead to life with You! Thank you for saving my soul from death. Thank you for taking me with you through good times and bad. Thank you for loving me. So…what’s next Papa? In Jesus Name, Amen
