Romans–Passionate Christian Theology
“Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go but that person lunch, or if he’s thirsty, get him a drink. Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.”
Romans 12, The Message
Paul wraps up this part of what it means to live like a believer, not just talk like one, with what the world would say, “going to extra mile” for someone who has betrayed you, done harm to you in some way, and generally and consistently is an enemy to you. This isn’t easy but it is mandatory if we want to live like Christ taught us to live. It will sometimes, (maybe always), require swallowing hard, letting go of all prideful thoughts. It is the beginning of being free of grudges and the instant replays of hurt.
But you know, it is true what we have read, it is hard to keep harboring bad thoughts about your enemies when you are praying for them and then serving them. It is as small as picking up the tab for lunch or silently leaving a small gift of what they need on their desk or porch. The Holy Spirit will tell you exactly what good deed is best.
For it is in these good deeds, that becomes the process of letting all the hurt they have caused you over the years to go away. This letting go and treating enemies like you would your friends brings freedom to your heart, mind and soul that nothing else can bring. Your smile returns. Yes, Jesus, our great Physician, is also our Counselor and Prince of Peace. He knows what we need and what we need to do to stay healthy and growing in Him. Enemies will not defeat us if Christ is leading our lives.
“Get the best of evil…do good.” At the very least it will throw enemies off guard, wondering what you will do next! Smiling. Stay clean. Stay healthy in Christ.

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for the reminder to stay free and healthy, growing in You. Thank you for helping us see that picking up the tab for an enemy is far better for us than wasting time trying to fight back, get even or harbor thoughts that cloud our focus on You and righteous living. May we think and behave today in ways that make you smile. In Jesus Name, Amen
