WANT TO SING IN THE CHOIR? HELP!

Romans–Passionate Christian Theology

We were at a store we try really hard to avoid. We are generally disappointed at the store’s inability or avoidance to help. The employees wear smocks that say, “How can I help?” when it should read, “All we have is what’s out”, don’t ask.” Are we like that as believers sometimes? “All we have in our heart is what is displayed in our lives out there…in the world that is needing help desperately? I wonder about my own life. Do I behave the way I say I believe? Is all I have is what’s out there on the shelf with the rest of the world? Is the shelf empty? Should I “go in the back and take stock” to make sure it’s not empty?

Finishing up Romans 14 and into 15…The Message

Romans 14:22-23 “Cultivate your own relationship with God, but don’t impose it on others. You’re fortunate if your behavior and your belief are coherent. But if you’re not sure, if you notice that you are acting in ways inconsistent with what you believe—some days trying to impose your opinions on others, other days just trying to please them—then you know that you’re out of line. If the way you live isn’t consistent with what you believe, then it’s wrong.”

Romans 15:1-2 “Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, “How can I help?”

3-6 “That’s exactly what Jesus did. He didn’t make it easy for himself by avoiding people’s troubles, but waded right in and helped out. “I took on the troubles of the troubled,” is the way Scripture puts it. Even if it was written in Scripture long ago, you can be sure it’s written for us. God wants the combination of his steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel in Scripture to come to characterize us, keeping us alert for whatever he will do next. May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all. Then we’ll be a choir—not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus!”

So…THIS is what is supposed to be in us so the character of our behavior lines up more closely with our belief. Then we are able to help like Jesus helped! Yes! I want to be in this choir…how about you? How can I help you?

Dear Heavenly Father, Getting ourselves in right relationship with You puts more character on the shelves of our lives so we can be of more help to others seeking You. May what we have “out there” reflect You in our hearts. Thank you for being with us, teaching us, and helping us to help others in the best way in Your way. In Jesus Name, Amen
