Psalms of Honesty and Wisdom
All my life I have been a watcher of people. I timidly stand a short distance away and just observe for awhile. I watch how other people do life. Then, like at the pool, I will stick a toe in to check the temperature, to see if I can bear it. Sometimes I pull back and other times I dive right in. Life is learned by watching someone else do it, doing it with them, then being mentored while you do it with them watching you and then you doing it. This cycle of learning to live well was brought to us by Jesus Christ. This is what I think about as we read the next wonderful morsel of wisdom from the longest, most important Psalm…119.
Psalm 119: 9-16, The Message
How can a young person live a clean life?
By carefully reading the map of your Word.
I’m single-minded in pursuit of you;
don’t let me miss the road signs you’ve posted.
I’ve banked your promises in the vault of my heart
so I won’t sin myself bankrupt.
Be blessed, God;
train me in your ways of wise living.
I’ll transfer to my lips
all the counsel that comes from your mouth;
I delight far more in what you tell me about living
than in gathering a pile of riches.
I ponder every morsel of wisdom from you,
I attentively watch how you’ve done it.
I relish everything you’ve told me of life,
I won’t forget a word of it.
What do we learn?
–Seek first the Kingdom of God, His ways, His law and how His Son taught us to live it.
–Attentively watch how Jesus did life…follow the map.
–Repeat.
