17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”
23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
HOLY PAUSE
Jesus, flesh and blood, given and risen, for us. Hold that thought for a minute or two.
Pause for a moment in pure gratitude. Drink in the thoughts of this sacrificial, selfless love. Chew on this scripture of preparation for the Savior’s act of payment of your sins, my sins, the sins of the world in which God loves, really, unconditionally loves.
“Is it me, Lord?”
Am I a Judas of betrayal when I reject Him by living selfishly?
Do we live life on our own thinking we can do better without God?
When we treat others less than ourselves, do we betray who Jesus is and how He loves?
When we are divided, as in the upper room, between betrayal and loyalty, do we crucify Jesus yet again?
What is the gold standard of our love? Is it love with conditions? Is it love that requires love in return? Do we truly love our neighbors and our enemies like Jesus taught and lived?
Abba Father,
It is not the intent of my heart to grieve your heart with my human weaknesses. Continue to transform my way of thinking to match your desires. Cleanse my heart of all that offends you. Wash over my soul and lift me up in my thinking and behaving to where you are in love, mercy and grace. It is only by your power that this can be achieved. I am weak but you are strong. Your grace is sufficient for all who believe. And I believe.
Satan love to play with our minds. He walks like believers, talks like believers, and often is beside believers as we do ministry inside and outside God’s church. Why? So he can change our thinking about what is most important in sly, nonchalant, unnoticeable ways.
Paul tells the church in Corinth, “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.” This battle is daily for all believers. When we succumb to this battle, the Deceiver wins, but only for a little while.
How does the Liar and Deceiver do it?
He weaves deceit and selfish ideas into the ministry that began as a work for God and His glory. Notice in this passage that ALL the disciples were, at first, indignant of the woman who broke the neck of the alabaster jar of very expensive perfume. ““Why this waste?” Their thoughts turned from Mary’s beautiful act of worship of Jesus to thoughts of waste for their ministry. Jesus is the object of all we are before all we do. Hold that thought.
When Jesus explained Mary’s heart, only Judas turned his eyes from the beauty of worship of Jesus, to where Satan was leading him—deadly betrayal. Judas had two choices. He chose betrayal because he wanted a revolutionary Messiah. Jesus was not who he wanted him to be for his agenda.
Matthew 26
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you,[a] but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
POINTS TO PONDER
THE BETRAYAL…
Jesus did not criticize the disciples because they were concerned about the poor. He was concerned about the poor, and we should be too. He was cautioning them against missing their opportunity to worship Him. They would always have opportunities to help the poor. But they would not always have the opportunity to worship at His feet and prepare Him for burial.
The disciples did not know the true character of Judas. His criticism of Mary sounded so “spiritual” that they joined him in attacking her. We know the real reason Judas wanted the ointment sold: The money would go into the treasury and he would be able to use it (John 12:6).
Judas is a tragic figure. He was called to be one of Christ’s disciples and was named an apostle along with the others (Mark 3:13–19). He received power to heal (Matt. 10:1–4), and he probably used this power. It is not the power to do miracles that is proof of salvation (Matt. 7:21–29), but obedience to God’s Word.
While we can never fully understand the mind and heart of Judas, we do know that he had every opportunity to be saved. He was often warned by Jesus in the Upper Room, Jesus even washed Judas’ feet. Probably, Judas saw in Jesus the hope for Israel’s political freedom. If Jesus established His kingdom, Judas, as treasurer, would have had an important position. When Jesus repeatedly refused to become a political Messiah, Judas turned against Him. Satan found a willing tool in Judas. Satan put the ideas into Judas’s mind (John 13:2) and then entered into Judas to use him to betray Jesus to the enemy (John 13:27).
Judas’s life is a warning to those who pretend to serve Christ but whose hearts are far from God. He is also a warning to those who waste their opportunities and their lives. “Why this waste?” asked Judas when he saw that expensive ointment poured out on Jesus. Yet Judas wasted his opportunities, his life, and his soul! Jesus called him “son of perdition” (John 17:12) which literally means “son of waste.”
THE BEAUTY OF WORSHIP
Only John identifies this woman as Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus. She is found only three times in the Gospels, and in each instance, she is at the feet of Jesus. She sat at His feet and listened to the Word (Luke 10:38–42); she came to His feet in sorrow after the death of Lazarus (John 11:28–32); and she worshipped at His feet when she anointed Him with the ointment (John 12:1ff.). Mary was a deeply spiritual woman. She found at His feet her blessing, she brought to His feet her burdens, and she gave at His feet her best. It was an act of love and devotion in worship of Jesus.
Because she had listened to His word, Mary knew that soon Jesus would die and be buried. Instead of anointing His body AFTER His death, she did so BEFORE His death. It was an act of faith and love. This was her act of worship of Jesus before, during and after his ministry and mission from God to save the world. We can learn a lot from Mary!
Notice that every time Mary sought to do something for Jesus, she was misunderstood. Her sister Martha misunderstood her when Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to hear Him teach the Word. Judas and the other disciples misunderstood her when she anointed Jesus. Her friends and neighbors misunderstood her when she came out of the house to meet Jesus after Lazarus had been buried (John 11:28–31). When we give Jesus Christ first place in our lives, we can expect to be misunderstood and criticized by those who claim to follow Him.
As believers, Jesus is our Messiah, Savior and Lord! At the beginning of anything done for God, is being with Jesus. At the center of ministry is our love for Jesus because of His love for us, asking what He wants from us. At the end of any ministry task, done in Jesus Name, is glory to God with thanksgiving for being invited to His work. It’s all about Jesus working in and through us to reconcile people to God. This is our worship to God.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1, NIV
Abba Father,
Thank you. Thank you for saving my soul. Thank you for giving us your examples of true worship of beauty through simple obedience. You always know what is best for us so that’s why all our trust and hope is in You. I love you, Lord, with all that I am and all that I have, heart, mind and soul. Continue to be my strength, joy, peace. Help me to walk humbly, show mercy and love like you love me.
When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”
“As you know…” Jesus had told the disciples what was going to happen, but they just could not wrap their brains around it. In two days, Jesus was going to die. He told them he was going to die as they walked along in the roads from town to town, “seeking the lost”. But crucified? The disciples knew what it meant to be crucified for it was a torturous way invented by the Romans to deter crime and revolutions. But Jesus? He has done nothing wrong so how can this possibly happen to Him?
Jesus’ devoted followers could not understand when Jesus told them he would be handed over to be crucified in two days. He also told them He would rise again in three days but they just could not understand…yet. Yes, Jesus told them the details of God’s Plan to save the world through Him throughout His ministry, but it was too hard to comprehend that Jesus, their Master Teacher, who could miraculously heal the sick and raise the dead would succumb to this scheme by the religious elite.
BUT HERE’S THE REALLY AMAZING THOUGHT…
Jesus, Son of God, knew. Jesus knew every detail of what He had to do to save us. He knew the minds of the those who hated Him. He knew the gossip, the mocking, the false accusations that would lead to the scheme to kill him. He knew the religious leaders did not know God so they did not recognize His Son so they had stopped looking for “the Messiah”. Jesus knew their plot to use the hated Romans to do their dirty work so life could go back to “normal” for them. They wanted Jesus to stop getting in their way of oppressing the people of God. Killing him was the only way…or so they thought.
Jesus knew how painful it would be to be nailed to thick planks after being beaten and stripped of his clothing. Jesus knew those who had cheered when He entered Jerusalem on a donkey with shouts of Hosanna, “God save us”, would later shout “Crucify Him!”
Jesus knew but He willingly laid down His life in exchange for our lives. He who knew no sin took this cruel punishment to pay for the sins of the world. He paid for all my sin. He paid for your sin.
Jesus also knew He would rise again in three days from death to prove to the world that He is King of kinds and LORD of lords, the Messiah God’s people had been waiting for centuries to come. Jesus, our Savior to all who believe and follow Him as Lord, knew.
Abba Father,
Thank you are words that don’t seem to be enough for all you did through Jesus to save us. Thank you, dear Jesus, for knowing your mission and sticking with The Plan to save us that was created since the beginning of time…because you knew us. I repent of taking this “knowing” lightly and your saving grace through pain and suffering for granted. You knew the pain, you knew you would go to hell and back for my sin, and you did it anyway. You humble me yet again this morning. I will meditate on your gift of life, the payment for all my sin, all day long. I love you, Lord, with all my heart, mind and soul.

Crucified Laid behind the stone You lived to die Rejected and alone
Like a rose trampled on the ground You took the fall And thought of me Above all…
Grandpa had a farm with goats, sheep, a couple of horses, peacocks, cockatiels, parakeets, cats, chickens, fish in the ponds, cattle and a few pigs. He wanted a monkey but grandma put her foot down with that wish. All the animals had their particular space on his 160 acres. Goats would irritate the sheep if you put them together. The horses would tease the cattle. The cats could not, under any circumstance, be near the birds. The chickens had their own place for the production of eggs to eat and sell. Yes, it was a producing farm. He raised the exotic birds to sell to pet stores. He raised cattle and pigs for his family to eat all winter. Grandma grew flowers, vegetables and fruit. They froze meat, canned fruit and vegetables and enjoyed providing for more than the two of them.
Grandpa was also a talented carpenter. He built custom cabinets for people who merely told him what they had in mind. He built his own house on his farm while raising animals. AND he was an elder in his church. Actually, he was deemed “THE elder” when it came to decision making with Godly wisdom.
How did he do all this? I’m wondering that now as I write this. He was fully devoted to God and asked God daily what He wanted him to do. His nightly habit, with Grandma at his side, was to read a portion of God’s Word, meditate on it, then get on their knees to pray. That’s where his strength and Grandma’s relentless faith came from, being with God before retiring for rest.
How do I know? I spent all my school vacations on this farm with them and became part of the process of learning about God and living for Him. I thought Grandpa knew everything. I wanted to be where he was at all times. I would sit on the door step waiting for his truck to come home from working on someone’s house so we could be together again. My grandma taught me about cooking but I always wanted to be outside as soon as “chores” were done inside. I will never forget the smile on Grandpa’s face as I followed him around with “life” questions. I loved seeing the twinkle in my grandma’s eyes when I did what she did well. She also laughed at all my jokes.
I also observed and sometimes helped my grandparents feed others. They would not hesitate to feed someone who came down their path from the main road hungry. Grandma’s habit at church was to greet new people who came with, “What are you doing for lunch? Why don’t you join us? We have plenty to share.” They were not rich in the eyes of the world but wealthy in faith, love, sharing, and caring.
I could go on, but you get the picture. When they served others, they knew they served Jesus. Those were the “lessons for life” that I learned. I am grateful, eternally grateful, for these lessons learned by knowing, seeing and doing.
Matthew 25
The Sheep and the Goats
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
WHAT DO WE LEARN?
Serving is what Jesus did. “I came to serve, not to be served.” (John 13). He gave us the extreme example of how to serve. He left us with nothing to question. He expects us to put others’ interests first (like He did)… above our own desires, pleasures, habits, free time and contentment. We are not to be greedy with our time but gracious in interruptions that help others. We are to serve “without the left hand knowing what the right hand is doing”. That means we serve as a habit of right living expecting nothing in return for our service to others. We see a need, then we meet that need according to what has been given to us.
It seems simple, doesn’t it? But, when this principle is called to be acted upon, excuses are easily found. Here are some of today’s “Goat-like” excuses:
“I’m too old and/or tired, let someone else.”
“I need to save my money for a rainy day.”
“I cannot serve because my needs have not yet been met.”
“I need my church to do for me what I expect.”
“I want my church to be there for me when I need it.”
“If you love me, you would give me what I need.”
“I’ll pray for you, but that’s all I can do at the moment.”
“I will come and help when life settles down.”
“I’ll be there for you…when I get a chance.”
“I would help you, but you need to help yourself first.”
“I would help but you got yourself into this so you can get yourself out.”
I could go on, but you get the picture. I am eternally grateful Jesus did not treat me, a failure in so many ways, with these goat-like excuses. He saved me. He restored me. He taught me and still teaches me. He is graciously patient and loves me without conditions. I must love like He loves. I want to love others like He loves me. This is the “least” I could do for what He has given to me…Life eternal with Him.
Jesus showed us the bigger picture of life and death in his story better than we can think or imagine. There are His sheep and there are goats. Who are we?
Abby Father, We repent of being goat-like in our attitudes of serving. Teach us to always follow in your ways, prompted by Your Holy Spirit. Help us to mature to the point of serving without question, without even thinking about it. Help serving to be in our DNA as Your people. May we serve you by serving others as a way of life. May this always be our habit of choice. Continue to transform our minds, hearts and souls. Put this sheep on the right, please.
All we have belongs to God. ALL of who we have become, all we have in our pockets right now, all we have on our backs, and all we have stored in our hearts, minds and souls. God, our Father and our Creator, gave us specific abilities at birth. He gave us Holy Spiritual gifts beyond our created abilities at our rebirth. When we say yes to Jesus Christ, these Holy gifts begin to take shape as we transform daily into all that God intended for us to be from birth. Amazing, right?
These Holy Spirit gifts come with the responsibility to grow and use them to help others find and follow Jesus, too. These gifts grow and bear fruit under God’s care and abiding in us. These gifts multiply as we use them humbly and gracefully for God’s Kingdom work, not for our glory, but for His. If God’s precious holy gifts are hidden, stored or worse yet, forgotten they become worthless to His Kingdom.
What gifts will He find in us when He comes?
Did we use what was given to us well?
Did we multiply our gifts by investing in learning His Word and growing in Him?
Did we then use our gifts to help others find and follow Him?
Did we bear the fruits of His Holy Spirit of “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” in the process of our transformation to be like more like Jesus in our walk with Him? (See Galatians 5)
Did we use our Holy gifts to help build His church? (See Ephesians 4)
“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” Ephesians 4:11-16, NLT
OR are we burying our gifts? (That’s what our foe, Satan, wants us to do.)
Jesus explains this process of using what was given to us in another parable of preparedness for His coming back to claim His own someday.
Matthew 25
The Parable of the Bags of Gold
14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’
23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
WHAT DO WE LEARN?
The two men who put their money to work each received the same commendation (Matt. 25:21, 23). It was not the portion but the proportion that made the difference. They started as servants, but their Lord promoted them to rulers. They were faithful with a few things, so the Lord trusted them with many things. They had worked and toiled, and now they entered into joy. Their faithfulness gave each of them a capacity for greater service and responsibility.
The third servant was unfaithful and therefore was unrewarded. Because this man was afraid he might fail, he never tried to succeed. He feared life and his responsibilities. This paralyzed him with anxiety, so he buried the talent to protect it. The least he could have done was put the money in a bank and collect some interest. There was no real risk in that.
What we do not use for the Lord, we are in danger of losing. The master reprimanded the unfaithful, unprofitable servant, and then took his talent from him. The man with the most talents received the extra talent.
USE IT OR LOSE IT!
It is possible that the one-talent man thought that his one talent was not really very important He did not have five talents, or even two. Why worry about one? Because he was appointed as a steward by the Lord! Use what has been given to you!! Were it not for the one-talent people in our world, very little would get accomplished. His one talent could have increased to two and brought glory to his master.
Jesus is our Master, Savior and Lord. Whatever has been given to us, we must give back to Him and to others wrapped up and delivered by His love, mercy and grace that lives in us. All for God, the Giver of Life.
These parables of being prepared (see yesterday’s blog) encourage us to love the truth of His appearing, look joyfully expectant for His appearing, and join Him in His work faithfully until He comes. We should be watching, witnessing, and working. We may not be successful in the eyes of other men and women, or even popular with others. But if we are faithful and profitable in using the gifts and abilities God gave us, we shall receive our reward when He comes.
Jesus IS coming back, you know.
Abba Father,
What a reminder of Your Truth today! I will be meditating on it all day long as I work in Your Name, for Your Glory. There is still much to do to reconcile the world to a right relationship with you. Speak to my heart, lead my mind and fill my soul. I’m listening…and willing.
“Put on your shoes!” “I told you an hour ago we were going!”
“NOW!” “What?” “You can’t find your shoes?” “Put on whatever you find!”
“I don’t care if they don’t match!” “We’re leaving now, with shoes or without!”
Does this sound like a scenario in your home with kids? Randy and I lived through this every time we rounded up our three kids to go out the door to anywhere. Years later, we caught ourselves saying the same things to our grandkids, helping them to find their shoes, too.
It’s a relentless cycle of conversation that has to do with being ready when it’s time to go. Jesus tells a different, but similar story about being ready when He comes back. Will we be ready, clothes and shoes on, our lights shining brightly for Him?
Or will we, like our kids, be caught without the shoes of readiness?
Matthew 25
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’
13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
WHAT DO WE LEARN?
Be ready, “you do not know the day or the hour”. Just be ready whenever Jesus comes back for His bride, the “whoever believers”, who live their lives in readiness for his return. It all begins with the most important relationship in life, for life. It begins with God. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
HOW CAN WE BE READY?
Be ready to daily give ourselves to God as worship of God alone. “Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.” Romans 12:1-2, The Message
Be ready to allow God to grow His character in us as He abides with us because of the relationship we began by accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it.” Romans 12, The Message It’s a process that is counterculture to world thinking: “Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
Be ready to love God completely. We love God first because HE first loved us. He gave us His Son to pay our debt of sin. We love God because He gave us life. We never forget the love of God or Christ who lives in us. We allow love to grow to maturity, forgetting ourselves, looking outside ourselves to the interest of others. (See Philippians 2 and 1 John 4:19)
Be ready to live gratefully knowing God’s grace. “Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.” Romans 12, The Message
Be ready to love and serve each other as Christ loved and served. Since Jesus came “to serve, not to be served”, we serve with the same attitude of His pure love for us. Each person who believes becomes part of the Body of Christ. God gives us gifts and abilities to us to serve like Jesus. Our service to God and to each other is all done in the Name of Jesus for God’s glory. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13). Read the whole chapter! Jesus said this after bending down to wash His disciples dusty, dirty feet, as a servant would for anyone entering the house of his master. Yes, love like that. “Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body.” Romans 12, The Message
Be ready to be who you are, not who you are not. “So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ’s body, let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t.”
“Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle.” Romans 12, The Message
Be ready with stamina for the long journey. “Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality.” Romans 12
Be ready to bless your enemies! “Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down. Get along with each other; don’t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody.” Romans 12
Be ready for God to take care of what only He can do. “Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. “I’ll do the judging,” says God. “I’ll take care of it.”” Romans 12
Be ready for evil to tempt you to do the opposite of what God wants. “Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person lunch, or if he’s thirsty, get him a drink. Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.” Romans 12.
GOT YOUR SHOES ON?
ARE YOU READY TO GO WHEN JESUS COMES FOR US?
It’s actually not the oil for our lamps or the shoes on our feet that He is coming for, instead it is our very souls who love God with all our hearts, all our minds and all our souls.
Whenever the world is in crisis, such as we are living now with a virus that can attack anyone at any time in life threatening ways, believers who have read, or at least heard about the end of the story in our Bibles often think, is this the beginning of the end of time? Stress and worry build and we wonder, are we ready? Hold that thought.
I remember being scared for nine months before the birth of our first child. I wanted to be close to the hospital when the first labor pains hit. I even looked for apartments near the hospital and asked how much the rent was! Yes, I was overly worried about what would happen when the pregnancy would be ending and a new life would be born. Television dramas depicting a baby born unexpectedly in a cab on the way to the hospital didn’t help my anxiety. Horror stories from other moms who had difficult births didn’t help, either. The doctor tried to ease my worry by saying babies will come when they are ready. Just be ready.
Giving birth to my first child, I also worried about what a labor pain would feel like. Would I know when the pains would come? Would I recognize the pain as the beginning of birth? Experienced moms assured me that I would INDEED know what the pain would feel like and when the pains would hit, signaling the start of birth. “No doubt about it, Susan, you will know!” “Birth pains are like no other pain you will ever have in your life!”
But when it is your first, you wonder over EVERY pain. Is this it? Is this real or false labor? Is this pain the real deal? Only if it continues, says the doctor. Oh yeah. So, it seems to be every ten minutes, is this it? Only if the pain continues and the time shortens between the pains. Okay. So, I put my efforts, instead, into preparing for her arrival. I got busy with getting the room ready by cleaning, polishing, mopping and decorating. This “nesting” encouraged me to prepare my mind, heart and soul for her arrival, too. The worry subsided and excitement began to build.
All that worry and concern over making it to the hospital in time was a useless stress that I didn’t need to have. Our first baby took a lot of time to be ready. She took even more time to be born. Our first child came, three weeks after her “due date” and 36 hours after labor. I had plenty of time. I smile now at the immature thoughts of needless worry I had at that time. Our precious daughter arrived when she was ready and we were more than ready to welcome her into our lives.
Whether we are living in the “end times” or not, if we believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior and follow Him in obedience as Lord of our lives, we will be ready for His arrival. Our own end time could be tomorrow or many years from today. Do we worry and stress needlessly until Jesus comes? Or just be ready? Mm, I choose to be ready.
Jesus IS coming, you know. No doubt about it. Be ready. Don’t worry about the hour or day, just be ready.
Matthew 24
The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times
24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.
22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.
26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
29 “Immediately after the distress of those days
“‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
The Day and Hour Unknown
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
HOLY PAUSE
Remember these important key points that Jesus said to settle our souls:
“Watch out that no one deceives you.”
“…see to it that you are not alarmed.”
“…the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
“For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” We will know when Jesus comes! It will be obvious and grand!
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” NO ONE on earth will know, only God.
Don’t worry, be watchful. Be ready. Live as if it will be in an hour, today, tomorrow, next week…be ready. When you least expect Him, expect Him. “Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”
AND BE EXPECTANT, full of hope as we see the arrival of the King of kings and LORD of lords!
Abba Father,
Thank you for this message to us, dear Jesus, that reminds us to get and stay ready for when You come for Your own. Thank you for your patience with us on earth. Continue to transform us and prepare your bride, your church, for your coming. Help us to always be watchful, without worry, standing firm in our hope in You.
My first graders LOVED playing the opposite game! I would say a word and they would shout the opposite with gusto. Salt, PEPPER! Open, SHUT! Good, BAD! You get the picture. The Pharisees did not. They were blind to all Jesus was trying to teach about the Kingdom of God.
We all know as we join God, by His invitation to help people find and follow Jesus into reconciliation with God, not all will follow. We will never be able to convince or persuade all people to follow the real, abundant living with God as we pointe them to the reconciliation work of Jesus Christ. For some people, no one will tell them what to do. Their only desire is to live for self, even though it is a lonely life.
God did give free will to choose. God wants us to come to Him because of our love for Him, not mere obligation to following rules. Who doesn’t want a relationship that is unconditionally loving, full of grace and mercifully kind? Well, apparently there are quite a few.
Even Jesus, Son of God, could not convince the hard-hearted Pharisees. Jesus gives the religious leaders who left God long ago, one more sermon that clarifies their sin condition. He describes who they are and what they are doing which is the opposite of Kingdom of God living. We read this carefully for we, too can fall into the trap of living life only for ourselves.

Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees
13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.
16 “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’ 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.
23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!
33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
WHAT DO WE LEARN?
We must not read this series of denunciations with the idea that Jesus lost His temper and was bitterly angry. Certainly, He was angry at their sins and what those sins were doing to the people. But His attitude was one of painful sorrow that the Pharisees were blinded to God’s truth and to their own sins. Perhaps the best way to deal with these eight “woes” is to contrast them with the eight beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1–12. In the Sermon on the Mount the Lord described true righteousness; here He described a false righteousness. Opposite Kingdom of God living is dangerous and painful, harmful and leads only to death.
Entering the kingdom—shutting up the kingdom (v. 13; 5:3). The poor in spirit enter the kingdom, but the proud in spirit keep themselves out and even keep others out.
Mourners comforted—destroyers condemned (v. 14; 5:4). While this verse is not in some manuscripts of Matthew, it is found in Mark 12:40 and Luke 20:47. Instead of mourning over their own sins, and mourning with needy widows, the Pharisees took advantage of people in order to rob them.
Meek inherit the earth—proud send souls to hell (v. 15; 5:5). A proselyte is a convert to a cause. The Pharisees were out to win others to their legalistic system, yet they could not introduce these people to the living God. Instead of saving souls, the Pharisees were condemning souls!
Hungering for holiness—greedy for gain (vv. 16–22; 5:6). “Blind guides” is a perfect description, one that must have brought a smile to the lips of the listeners. Jesus had used it before (Matt. 15:14). The Pharisees were blind to the true values of life.
Obtaining mercy—rejecting mercy (vv. 23–24; 5:7). The Pharisees majored on minors. They had rules for every minute area of life, while at the same time they forgot about the important things. The principles of Christian giving under grace are given in 2 Corinthians 8—9. We are not content simply to give a tithe (10 percent), but we also want to bring offerings to the Lord out of hearts filled with love.
Pure in heart—defiled in heart (vv. 25–28; 5:8). Jesus used two illustrations: the cup and platter, and the sepulcher. They both stated the same truth: it is possible to be clean on the outside and at the same time defiled on the inside. Imagine using dishes that were defiled! Whatever you put into the dish or cup would also become defiled. The Pharisees were careful to keep the outside very clean, because that was the part that men would see, and they wanted the praise of men. But God sees the heart (1 Sam. 16:7). When God looked within, He saw “greed and self-indulgence” (Matt. 23:25 niv).
Peacemakers and persecuted are God’s children— persecutors are the devil’s children (vv. 29–33; 5:9–12). When Jesus called the Pharisees “serpents generation of vipers,” He was identifying them with Satan, who is the serpent (Gen. 3:1). In His parable of the tares, Jesus made it clear that Satan has a family (Matt. 13:38). Satan is a murderer and a liar (John 8:44), and his children follow his example. The Pharisees were liars (Matt. 23:30) and murderers (Matt. 23:34). It was traditional for the Pharisees to build, improve, and embellish the tombs of the martyrs. But it was “their fathers” who killed the martyrs! Not their biological fathers, of course, but their “spiritual fathers”—the hypocrites of the past ages.
WRAPPING IT UP…
As we review these tragic woes from the lips of our Lord, we can see why the Pharisees were His enemies. He emphasized the inner man; they were concerned with externals. He taught a spiritual life based on principles, while the Pharisees majored on rules and regulations. Jesus measured spirituality in terms of character, while the Pharisees measured it in terms of religious activities and conformity to external laws. Jesus taught humility and sacrificial service, but the Pharisees were proud and used people to accomplish their own purposes. The holy life of Jesus exposed their artificial piety and shallow religion. Instead of coming out of the darkness, the Pharisees tried to put out the Light, and they failed.
HOLY PAUSE
D. L. Moody used to say, “If I take care of my character, my reputation will take care of itself.” The Pharisees lived for reputation, not character.
What or who do I live for?
What is most important to me?
Abba Father,
I chose you. You chose me. You loved me first then I loved you. I love you with all my heart, mind and soul. The more I learn about You, the more I learn I need to know. But one thing is for certain, and like Paul I have “not arrived” , but will continue to allow you to transform me into all you created me to be…your servant child. I believe. I want no part of fake, unclean living that only hurts me and those around me. I want to live for you!
Many comedians who make us laugh the most come from souls of high insecurity and emotional sadness. “It’s all an act” to entertain us. In real life, many comics are depressed and struggle to grasp reality in their popularity. They use comedy as avoidance of dealing with reality.
Actors who become someone else other than themselves speak their lines boldly and confidently because they have great memories. They, too, avoid reality to play a part bigger than themselves and different than their dire circumstances. Great actors put all their being into the role they play to the point that sometimes they believe who they are acting to be. We believe it, too. As a child, I really thought my hero, Superman, was real and could fly! Who didn’t wear a towel for a cape and ride your bikes to simulate flying through the air like he did? Oh, did I reveal a secret? We learn that many of these actors are shy and withdrawn off the stage and need a script to relate to people. They only play a role given to them for money and fame.
“All the world is a stage, and all the men and women merely players…”, Shakespeare writes as a commentary on life. There are those who fantasize so much about being someone else these days that they don’t know who they are anymore. They want to be rich so they follow rich people around trying to be like them, do what they do, wear what they wear only to learn that rich people don’t always have it together either and quickly lose all that was gained in this world by a mere market turn or crash.
There are those who act good and right so they can get the attention of the world around them. They spew hate and sarcasm towards mankind but put on smiles for a photo op as they give a backpack full of supplies to a needy student or write a check to a non-profit.
There are those who will volunteer at God’s house only for reasons of satisfying their own need to be needed or to gain recognition for doing good. It’s all about them and not about helping others for God’s glory. According to Jesus, they are serving only themselves which is not serving at all, at least, not by the standards He demonstrated while on earth. “I came to serve, not to be served”, says Jesus to all who heard and understood. If we serve to serve self, then it is MEnistry, not ministry.
Jesus was not an actor. Jesus was Who He said He was, is and always will be. Jesus, who knew hearts before and during ACTions, reveals the play actors in this passage. God as not part of the religious leaders’ “act” any longer. They acted on their own power, by their own means, for their own glory.
Matthew 23
A Warning Against Hypocrisy
23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
5 “Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
WHAT DO WE LEARN?
The phrase “practice what you preach” is said in many places all over the world. I wonder how many know this phrase, along with “everything you do is for people to see”, comes from Jesus admonition to the Teachers of the God’s Law?
How many servant leaders today work alongside their team to get the work accomplished or just assign the work to be accomplished without lifting a finger to help? We don’t like to follow leaders like that do we? We like to follow those who are “with us” in the work, doing their part.
Attention getters spout the Word without living the Word. What IS a phylactery? It is a small leather box containing Hebrew texts on vellum, worn by Jewish men at morning prayer as a reminder to keep the law. They wore (and wear) it on their head! The more tassels they wore signified greater importance, or so they thought. Jesus called them out on both traditions.
Jesus taught his disciples, (and those who will follow) “But you…” will not ACT like this. There is only ONE Teacher, ONE Father, ONE Instructor, the Messiah. HE is God and we are not.
Then Jesus clarifies what a true leader must be before doing anything of significance in His Kingdom: “Humble yourselves”.
We have learned a lot today about what servant leadership looks like and how to begin living as a contributing member of God’s Kingdom which is opposite of worldview thinking and acting. Believers serve in humility. Believers serve for God’s glory. Believers serve because we love Him. True, honest believers serve because “to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” (2 Samuel 15:22).
HOLY PAUSE
Stop the play acting and get back to basics. We are not fooling Jesus with our “act”.
Repent of mere acting to get by and pray to be who God created us to be. Do not perform, only obey. Give all the glory to God. Reward comes later in heaven when Jesus says, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

What is my attitude when I serve?
For clarification, what does the Lord God require?
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8
Abba Father,
YOU are GOD and I am not. I come to you with honest evaluation. Cleanse my heart, my thinking and behaving of anything that has been offensive to you and stunts my spiritual growth. Keep me focused on your will and direction even when the world around me goes a different path. Keep me from doing harm to anyone but use me to encourage, to act justly and love mercy. I am humbled by Your Word today. My desire is walk so closely with you that I hear the mere whisper of your voice. I am your servant. Thank you, Lord.
I can see it now in my mind of memories. I stood inside the screen door listening to our three young children arguing outside about something that none of them knew much about. The discussion continued with ridiculous half-truths and assumptions based on what they thought they knew. There were retorts that always began with “Yea, but…”. I let it go on because this is how I knew what they were thinking. But when it got heated, I would step in before it got physical in proving their points.
“Here’s what is going on”, I would begin, “This is what is true about what you are discussing.” All three would listen because of my inborn, “teacher-mom look”, but only for seconds. So, Truth had to be told quickly and efficiently. The response was never, “Oh mom, thank you for much for your words of truth and wisdom.” It was usually, “Huh.” And then they ran off to play until the next debate over life’s trivia.

Whose Son Is the Messiah?
41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”
“The son of David,” they replied.
43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,
44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
TRUTH STOPS THE DISCUSSION
“What do you think about the Messiah?”
Jesus’ questions stumped his accusers who judged and ridiculed, assumed and mocked. These religious and political elite knew only self-made power. They knew enough about God’s Law to be dangerous. They manipulated God’s words so much that Truth was now hidden from their minds, hearts and souls.
Here is Truth, the “long awaited Messiah”, standing right in front of them and they do not recognize Him. They do not WANT to recognize them. We can almost hear them mumble, “Huh”, like young children. They do not accept Jesus nor do they accept defeat. They then stole away from Truth and gathered as leaders to see how they could kill their own Messiah.
HOLY PAUSE
When have you thought one way about an issue until you were told the truth? Did it affect your whole life, change your thinking, and transform your behavior?
Was Jesus the One who saved you from the lies of previous thought?
Was it Jesus who brought you to Truth?
Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”, in that order for a reason. Even today, His Holy Spirit leads us to the Way to Truth which gives us real, abundant, no turning back, Life forever when we believe Truth as the Person of Jesus Christ.
What do you think about the Messiah?
It’s not what I think, it’s Who I know. Our Messiah is Jesus Christ, Son of God, born of a Virgin, lived to die for our sins and rose again to prove He is King forever! That’s the Truth!
“I was blind, but now I see”. Jesus saved me. Truth IS…whether we choose to believe or not. I believe. I pray you do, too.
Abba Father,
Thank you for opening my eyes to the Truth who is Your Son. Thank you for saving my soul. Thank you for changing my mind and behavior daily. Thank you for life, real life. Thank you for helping others see you, too and live for you with all their hearts, minds and souls. Thank you for your work of salvation that grows your character in us which is transforming. Continue to do what you must we can love like you love us.
