LIVING A LOVER’S LIFE

Philippians – The Happiness Letter

In my long ago, former life, I was responsible for organizing at least four mission trips per year. It took most of the year in planning how we would come alongside our missionaries, writing a devotional message for each day of the trip, and then arranging flights, housing and meals. Yes, it was a lot of work, sometimes overwhelming, but very rewarding if your heart is led by God to make the most of this opportunity with high school and college kids and to lead with a heart motivated to please God in all you are and do.

These “kids” are now grown up. What I remember most about our students is watching that “deer in headlights” look on their faces at the airport, at the beginning of the trip, melt into deep love for God and for each other, with their hearts, minds and souls focused on the mission to help others know God more. With all that happens on a mission team with purpose comes, the struggles, the culture shock, getting to know each other as well as the people on the mission field with whom they are coming alongside, crying, laughing, sometimes accomplishing ministry for the first time in their lives where it depends on them, seeing and feeling emotions that have never seen or felt before because God intervenes in their hearts. He finally has their attention. The kids hear Him like they have never heard him before.

Then it happens. Kids are drawn together in love for each other in ways that reflects what the church on a mission every day should be. I always reminded them in “debriefing” before coming home that they can do this at home. Our “devotions” were always about applying God’s Truth to their current situations and circumstance. Our reflections of the day discussed at night as we gathered for prayer always lasted longer and longer as the days went by for the duration of the trip. We even had communion and washed each other’s feet in service to each other. Wow, what joy floods my soul as I remember!

On a mission trip, all the world stuff is left behind and Christ becomes the focus. His Presence in us becomes sharper and clearer. Our hearts are broken of those things that break His. Yes, I thank God for all those kids I had the privilege to come alongside for a little while and live life with them in ways that glorified God and helped all of us grow closer to Him and to each other. I understand Paul’s words of thanks for his friends who came alongside and lived life with him, with struggles and victories, and it makes my heart glad!

Philippians 1, The Message
3-6 Every time you cross my mind, I break out in exclamations of thanks to God. Each exclamation is a trigger to prayer. I find myself praying for you with a glad heart. I am so pleased that you have continued on in this with us, believing and proclaiming God’s Message, from the day you heard it right up to the present. There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears.

7-8 It’s not at all fanciful for me to think this way about you. My prayers and hopes have deep roots in reality. You have, after all, stuck with me all the way from the time I was thrown in jail, put on trial, and came out of it in one piece. All along you have experienced with me the most generous help from God. He knows how much I love and miss you these days. Sometimes I think I feel as strongly about you as Christ does!

9-11 So this is my prayer: that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well. Learn to love appropriately. You need to use your head and test your feelings so that your love is sincere and intelligent, not sentimental gush. Live a lover’s life, circumspect and exemplary, a life Jesus will be proud of: bountiful in fruits from the soul, making Jesus Christ attractive to all, getting everyone involved in the glory and praise of God.

What do we learn?
–Every day we are on a mission for God.
–Every day we thank God for those who come alongside us, join us and live life with us, loving God and each other.
–“And they’ll know we are Christians by our love…”
–Are we making Jesus Christ attractive to all?
–Are we getting everyone involved in the glory and praise of God?

Yes, I remember all my “kids” on a mission across the world and in our own backyard…and I give thanks to God for each one of you!

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for every person You put in my life to teach me, to cheer and guide me, to mentor and lead me. Thank you for those you put in my life to mentor and guide. We love them all as we love You. Thank you for all the opportunities you continue to give to come alongside others who are also growing in their love for You. Help us, Lord. May all we are on the inside and do on the outside reflect Your Glory and make you smile today. Bless all those “kids”. In Jesus Name, Amen

PHILIPPIANS – HAPPINESS LETTER

Rejoice! This is the day to rejoice!

Who do most want to hang around? Are you drawn to gloomy people or people who have this endless smile on their faces that makes their whole countenance be inviting, and even contagious. I am drawn to the latter. I am a cheerleader, at heart. So, I am excited to read and meditate over words of joy in the next few days in Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Read with me, rejoice and be glad while learning from the “master of happy”. Let our hearts well up with joy unspeakable and full of the glory of God in us! Yes!

Philippians is Paul’s happiest letter. And the happiness is infectious. Before we’ve read a dozen lines, we begin to feel the joy ourselves–the dance of words and the exclamations of delight have a way of getting inside us. Let it!

Eugene Peterson, in his introduction to this letter says, “But the happiness is not a word we can understand by looking it up in the dictionary. In fact, none of the qualitites of the hristian life can be learned out of a book. Something more like apprenticeship is required, being around someone who out of years of devoted discipline shows us, by his or her entire behavior, what it is. Moments of verbal instruction will certainly occur, but mostly an apprentice acquires skill by daily and intimate association with a ‘master,’ picking up subtle but absolutely essential things, such as timing and rhythm and ‘touch.'”

When we read what Paul wrote to the Christian believers in the city of Philippi, we find ourselves in the company of just such a master. Paul doesn’t tell us that we can be happy, or how to be happy. He simply and unmistakably IS happy. None of his circumstances contribute to his joy: He wrote from a jail cell, his work was under atttack by competitors, and after twety years or so of hard traveling in the service of Jesus, he was tired and would have welcomed some relief.

But circumstances are incidental compared to the life of Jesus, the Messiah, that Paul experiences from the inside. For it is a life that no only happened at a certain point in history, but continues to happen, spilling out into the lives of those who receive him, and then continues to spill out all over the place. Christ is, among much else, the revelation that God cannot be contained or hoarded. It is this “spilling out” quality of Christ’s life that accounts for the happiness of Christians, for joy is life in excess, the overflow of what cannot be contained within any one person.

Philippians 1, The Message

“Paul and Timothy, both of us committed servants of Christ Jesus, write this letter to all the Christians in Philippi, pastors and ministers included. We greet you with the grace and peace that comes from God our Father and our master, Jesus Christ.”

“Every time you cross my mind, I break out in exclamation of thanks to God. Each exclamation is a trigger to prayer.”

Jesus invites

Dear Heavenly Father, Scores of people who have been wonderful examples of joy in all circumstances flood my mind and I give thanks to You for them. I pray for Your hand of encouragement and hope to fill our hearts today. May our faces reflect Your glory no matter what we will face. We love You, Lord. Thank you for loving us first and spilling out for us, Jesus Christ…our Lord and Savior. Go with us through this day for it is a day to rejoice and be glad as we look up and see you around every corner. In Jesus Name, Amen

WHAT WE NEED…IS A GOOD CHEER!

Belief and Behavior

Don’t judge me. Back when Saturday Live was funny and not so gross, a sketch that I loved was the “The Spartan Cheerleaders”. The male was Wil Farrell and the very short female (I relate) was Cheri Oteri. They would cheer with fervor and dedication…at very odd times, unsupervised and not apart of the regular cheerleading squad. They would show up a chess games and cheer them on. They had their own bench, away from the other “real” cheerleaders and cheer at the football games until someone pushed them away. All they wanted to be were true encouragers, cheering anyone on to victory. They were good just not chosen to do it. Mm. Such is life.

But Paul, who is in jail, is the greatest cheerleader of all to other servants and believers. He is just as dedicated but has the Holy Spirit of God driving him with passion as he encourages and cheers the church on to victory, a fight to the finish. After teaching us, Paul is led to cheer us. I love that about Paul, who is sitting in jail, but is not stopped in his work for God. HE was chosen to do it.

Ephesians 6, The Message
10-12 And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.

13-18 Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.

19-20 And don’t forget to pray for me. Pray that I’ll know what to say and have the courage to say it at the right time, telling the mystery to one and all, the Message that I, jailbird preacher that I am, am responsible for getting out.

21-22 Tychicus, my good friend here, will tell you what I’m doing and how things are going with me. He is certainly a dependable servant of the Master! I’ve sent him not only to tell you about us but to cheer you on in your faith.

23-24 Good-bye, friends. Love mixed with faith be yours from God the Father and from the Master, Jesus Christ. Pure grace and nothing but grace be with all who love our Master, Jesus Christ.

What do we learn?
–As believers, our behavior must match what we say we believe.
–Stay alert. Stay armed for battle.
–Pray for each other.
–Stay strong and the Lord will be our strength.
–Cheer each other on!

What this calls for is a good cheer!

cheer

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for encouragement and peace in the battle and storms we navigate in this life. Thank you for the many blessings You have given so undeserved…yet You give! We praise You and honor You with our thanksgiving and our “cheers” for Your unconditional love, mercy and grace. Go with us this day and use us to encourage others. In Jesus Name, Amen

HONOR YOUR PARENTS

HONOR YOUR PARENTS

We began Finding Focus Ministries about ten years ago. About six years ago another call came to us that curtailed our activity with FFM for awhile. The command, “honor your parents”, was laid heavy on my heart. My aging parents, in not great health, still lived in Oklahoma. Randy and I live in Indiana. Our grown children and grandchildren live nearby us. By God’s grace and impression on my parents’ hearts and minds, they consented to moving near us. We sold their home in three weeks for a great price that would allow them comfort in living out their days. We brought them near us. Mom died shortly thereafter in 2009. Dad would not be able to live by himself, so we moved him in with us a few months after mom’s death.

The transition from living as two working people with crazy schedules to a third person who wanted to be in every conversation took some extra effort in the “honor your parents” mandate from our Father in heaven. Dad didn’t care too much for my cooking, saw the glass half empty (grumpy), needed certain foods, had weird habits and paid no attention to whether is was night or day, was hard of hearing so the TV was pretty loud, and “needed” name brands foods as well as buckets and buckets of chocolate chip ice cream. But, we did it. We provided him with his own half of our small home. He was able to live out his days over the next six years with his own bedroom, a TV room and his own bathroom. My goal was to make him happy. I didn’t always succeed.

He is now gone. He passed from this life to the arms of Jesus and my smiling mom, December 23, 2015. Because I had to stay strong for dad over the loss of mom, I am now grieving the loss of both parents. God comforts me (and Randy who lost both of his parents earlier) with “you obeyed”.

This is what I think about as I read Paul’s continued help to the church with HOW to love.

Ephesians 6, The Message
1-3 Children, do what your parents tell you. This is only right. “Honor your father and mother” is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it, namely, “so you will live well and have a long life.”

This is not just a suggestion but a commandment, “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12

“Honoring our fathers and our mothers, includes esteem of them, shown in our conduct; obedience to their lawful commands; come when they call you, go where they send you, do what they bid you, refrain from what they forbid you; and this, as children, cheerfully, and from a principle of love. Also in submission to their counsels and corrections. Endeavoring, in every thing, to comfort parents, and to make their old age easy; maintaining them if they need support, which our Savior makes to be particularly intended in this commandment, Mt 15:4-6.” –Matthew Henry’s Commentary

We were not always perfect in our transitional living conditions, but our deep love and adoration remained strong for each other. I look for dad’s light, still. I expect him to be in his chair, reading his Bible and “The Daily Bread”, or simply watching TV. I still look for him to come in for another bowl of ice cream. Yes, I love you dad and I miss you but I know you are finally, totally happy, in paradise with God you love along with mom whom you adored. I could never make you as happy as you must be now. I praise God for your life. I praise God for helping me help you.

parents

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for your comfort in mourning as I write this. Thank you for helping us through the tough stuff of this life. Thank you for being our Heavenly Father who loves us so much we can’t totally wrap our minds around it. Continue to transform our lives into all You intended for us to be…then do.
In Jesus Name, Amen

The way you treat your parents is the way your children will treat you. Good or bad. It’s truth.

BRINGING THE BEST!

BRINGING THE BEST!

Belief and Behavior

This summer, Randy and I will have been married 45 years! Wow, where did the time go? For almost half a century, our hearts have beat as one. Guess what? After all these years, I haven’t stopped trying to love and please him. My heart still beats a little faster as I finish my drive home from work, hoping he beat me home from his work, so we can see each other again after a long day. I am disappointed if he is not there and I have to wait on him.

I even still try to look my best, which is trickier as we get older…it takes longer…but my desire is to please him! (If we take off our glasses, we look great!) We love just being together. He brings out the best in me. My desire is to bring out the best in him. We are not perfect but we have a Savior who forgives, taught us to forgive and is preparing us as His Bride to be eternally with Him.

We are all in preparation for what is next. HOW are we preparing? Do we bring out the best or the worst in each other as a church under Christ? Paul uses husband and wife relational words to also guide us to be a church submitting ourselves to Christ. Even though we have been life-long church people, do we give up as brides of Christ and stop trying to please Him? Do we become mellow and dull in our relationship with Jesus as He works to prepare His Bride for His coming? Or do our hearts beat a little faster when we talk about His love for us and our love for Him? Do we allow God to bring out the best in us? Mm.

Relationships.

21 Out of respect for Christ, be courteously reverent to one another.

22-24 Wives, understand and support your husbands in ways that show your support for Christ. The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church, not by domineering but by cherishing. So just as the church submits to Christ as he exercises such leadership, wives should likewise submit to their husbands.

25-28 Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church—a love marked by giving, not getting. Christ’s love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness. And that is how husbands ought to love their wives. They’re really doing themselves a favor—since they’re already “one” in marriage.

29-33 No one abuses his own body, does he? No, he feeds and pampers it. That’s how Christ treats us, the church, since we are part of his body. And this is why a man leaves father and mother and cherishes his wife. No longer two, they become “one flesh.” This is a huge mystery, and I don’t pretend to understand it all. What is clearest to me is the way Christ treats the church. And this provides a good picture of how each husband is to treat his wife, loving himself in loving her, and how each wife is to honor her husband.

Reflection:
There is so much to think about as we evaluate our relationships with God through Jesus, His Son, with our marriages, our family and friends, our coworkers, and even strangers who we will come in contact with on this journey called Today. Will I work to bring out the best in others as I submit to and revere Christ as Lord?

Embrace-1-300x237

Dear Heavenly Father,
Our relationship with You has been the most important thing on Your mind since You created us. Our relationships with each other are also important as we work to bring out the best in each other as Your bring out the best in us. Thank you for loving us…help us love like You love. Unconditionally.
In Jesus Name, Amen
