DID HE GET INSIDE YOUR HEART?

God’s Acts

It is so easy to fall back on what little you know, to lose focus in the busyness of life, and to be merely impressed with Jesus as a teacher who taught us to live a good life without hurting each other. So, I am halted by the question that pierces my soul this morning that is asked by Paul to a group of disciples he meets while taking a side trip through the mountains. It is a question of reflection and evaluation for all of us. For we are all sinners, saved only by the grace of God. After the “saving”, however, what’s next? Do we embrace him with our hearts? Is He living in us, working through us from the inside out in our thinking and behavior? Can we lose control for awhile and allow Jesus to be Lord over all and in all that we are and do? Can we risk it?

Read and see what the Holy Spirit says to you. I have enough work to do on me! I need to be an out of control disciple…with God deep inside, calling all the plays in this game of life here.

Acts 19, The Message
1-2 Now, it happened that while Apollos was away in Corinth, Paul made his way down through the mountains, came to Ephesus, and happened on some disciples there. The first thing he said was, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? Did you take God into your mind only, or did you also embrace him with your heart? Did he get inside you?”

“We’ve never even heard of that—a Holy Spirit? God within us?”

What do we learn? Jesus purposely left His Holy Spirit to come and live inside all of us who believe and are saved by His grace. The Holy Spirit leads, guides, comforts in loss, protects us from bad selfish decisions, convicts us when we falter, brings peace to restless hearts and soothes the mind with Truth and clarity when evil attacks.

“Did He get inside you?”

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for Your Holy Spirit, our Helper, that is alive and well and active in our hearts, minds and souls. Take the lead. Come and reside deep inside for we are listening for your next direction. Guide every detail of our lives today. Thank you for saving us and not leaving us. Thank you for giving us a part of You to live in us. In Jesus Name, Amen

WE CAN ONLY TAKE PEOPLE AS FAR IN THE WORD AS WE HAVE BEEN…

God’s Acts

We have heard it said, “a little knowledge is dangerous”. Sometimes that is true if this little knowledge is accompanied by an unteachable spirit. When training volunteer small group leaders, I remind them that a teacher is a life long learner. The pure definition of “teacher” by the Greeks is “one who learns”. We must continue to dig deeper because we can only take those in our care as far in the Word of Truth as we have been. So, prayer, study and meditation of the Word BEFORE we attempt to tell someone else about Jesus is mandatory if we want others to grow to tell someone else. Ministry is an exponential process. We must always remain teachable as a teacher.

Will we ever have it all down, know it so well, that we stop learning? NO! Every time we enter into a relationship that involves communication with God through His Holy Spirit as we read AND listen to His Word, He teaches us something new that our tiny human minds did not realize before coming before Him with open hearts and minds.

As we work to know more, He blesses us with more to “chew on”, more in which to change in our lives, along with a pouring out of blessings because we spent time with Him, our Father in Heaven. Jesus made a way for us to do this. Don’t take it lightly. He suffered, died, rose again so that we may sit down each morning and listen to HIm speak volumes to us through His Word. Jesus, our Messiah, is Truth Who made a way for us to be eternally with God now and forever. SEEK Truth.

As Paul is going around, retracing his steps so that he might encourage all the people reached with the Truth of Jesus as Messiah, he, along with his new friends and co-pastors, Priscilla and Aquila, come alongside a powerfully gifted speaker who knows only partial truth. Fortunately, he is teachable, as they relate the “rest of the story” about Jesus who paid for all sin. Read, meditate on all that is going on here in God’s passage for this morning as Paul goes to Ephesus….see what God says to you!

Acts 18, The Message
Ephesus
18 Paul stayed a while longer in Corinth, but then it was time to take leave of his friends. Saying his good-byes, he sailed for Syria, Priscilla and Aquila with him. Before boarding the ship in the harbor town of Cenchrea, he had his head shaved as part of a vow he had taken.

19-21 They landed in Ephesus, where Priscilla and Aquila got off and stayed. Paul left the ship briefly to go to the meeting place and preach to the Jews. They wanted him to stay longer, but he said he couldn’t. But after saying good-bye, he promised, “I’ll be back, God willing.”

21-22 From Ephesus he sailed to Caesarea. He greeted the church there, and then went on to Antioch, completing the journey.

23 After spending a considerable time with the Antioch Christians, Paul set off again for Galatia and Phrygia, retracing his old tracks, one town after another, putting fresh heart into the disciples.

24-26 A man named Apollos came to Ephesus. He was a Jew, born in Alexandria, Egypt, and a terrific speaker, eloquent and powerful in his preaching of the Scriptures. He was well-educated in the way of the Master and fiery in his enthusiasm. Apollos was accurate in everything he taught about Jesus up to a point, but he only went as far as the baptism of John. He preached with power in the meeting place. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and told him the rest of the story.

27-28 When Apollos decided to go on to Achaia province, his Ephesian friends gave their blessing and wrote a letter of recommendation for him, urging the disciples there to welcome him with open arms. The welcome paid off: Apollos turned out to be a great help to those who had become believers through God’s immense generosity. He was particularly effective in public debate with the Jews as he brought out proof after convincing proof from the Scriptures that Jesus was in fact God’s Messiah.

What we learn?
–Be teachable. God will bless your ministry.
–WOW, now this gifted speaker, with the whole Truth, will spread the rest of the story exponentially to the known world for all to hear, accept and believe.
–Jesus, is God’s Messiah! Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the LIfe, and the only way to God, the Father.

Pause and reflect on Truth. May our hearts be filled with gratitude!

Dear Heavenly Father, You overwhelm me with Who you are and why you love me, a sinner saved only by Your unconditional love, mercy and grace. Thank you for the Way, Truth and Life. Thank you Holy Spirit for staying with us, never leaving us, never letting us go so that we may live eternally with God, Father. Thank you, just thank you for men and women who were teachable then and those who are teachable now who continue to teach Truth. I am grateful. In Jesus Name, Amen

THE MASTER GOES WITH US WHEN WE FOLLOW HIS LEAD

God’s Acts

As we follow Paul through this journey from place to place in the Greek world, we are reminded of our own journey through life’s moves from home to ministry assignments that have placed us in different cultural settings. We knew, without doubt, when God told us to go and when to stay. To know is to know God. To hear the call is to focus on the Master, Jesus Christ. To see what lies ahead is to lean fully into the Holy Spirit who empower us with wisdom to make the changes in us that are necessary for each task. Some assignments, we ask, “are You sure, Lord?” Others were obvious. Some assignments were excruciatingly tough on us physically and emotionally, but to refuse God would have been even harder.

Through it all, God was with us. He is still with us. He promises to never leave us. Count on it. Paul did. As Paul preached in a land of evil running rampant with selfish living, God gives him helpers in Aquila and Priscilla. They became a tireless triad of testimony about Jesus. They made a living of making tents while in ministry until more help arrived. Sometimes in ministry you have to fall back on your trade and that’s okay, too! That’s why I’m teaching at present. Does our ministry to encourage others stop? Nope. We keep on wherever we are, being whomever God ordains us to be until He moves us on in His time for His purpose. I love that about God. By following His will, in gratitude, through it all we can have peace in all circumstances. This is what we learn today from reading God’s Word of HIS ACTS in this world HE created.

Acts 18, The Message
Corinth
18 1-4 After Athens, Paul went to Corinth. That is where he discovered Aquila, a Jew born in Pontus, and his wife, Priscilla. They had just arrived from Italy, part of the general expulsion of Jews from Rome ordered by Claudius. Paul moved in with them, and they worked together at their common trade of tentmaking. But every Sabbath he was at the meeting place, doing his best to convince both Jews and Greeks about Jesus.

5-6 When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was able to give all his time to preaching and teaching, doing everything he could to persuade the Jews that Jesus was in fact God’s Messiah. But no such luck. All they did was argue contentiously and contradict him at every turn. Totally exasperated, Paul had finally had it with them and gave it up as a bad job. “Have it your way, then,” he said. “You’ve made your bed; now lie in it. From now on I’m spending my time with the other nations.”

7-8 He walked out and went to the home of Titius Justus, a God-fearing man who lived right next to the Jews’ meeting place. But Paul’s efforts with the Jews weren’t a total loss, for Crispus, the meeting-place president, put his trust in the Master. His entire family believed with him.

8-11 In the course of listening to Paul, a great many Corinthians believed and were baptized. One night the Master spoke to Paul in a dream: “Keep it up, and don’t let anyone intimidate or silence you. No matter what happens, I’m with you and no one is going to be able to hurt you. You have no idea how many people I have on my side in this city.” That was all he needed to stick it out. He stayed another year and a half, faithfully teaching the Word of God to the Corinthians.

12-13 But when Gallio was governor of Achaia province, the Jews got up a campaign against Paul, hauled him into court, and filed charges: “This man is seducing people into acts of worship that are illegal.”

14-16 Just as Paul was about to defend himself, Gallio interrupted and said to the Jews, “If this was a matter of criminal conduct, I would gladly hear you out. But it sounds to me like one more Jewish squabble, another of your endless hairsplitting quarrels over religion. Take care of it on your own time. I can’t be bothered with this nonsense,” and he cleared them out of the courtroom.

17 Now the street rabble turned on Sosthenes, the new meeting-place president, and beat him up in plain sight of the court. Gallio didn’t raise a finger. He could not have cared less.

What we learn? God is with us. We dare not trust the Master, Jesus, the Messiah…
“Keep it up, and don’t let anyone intimidate or silence you. No matter what happens, I’m with you and no one is going to be able to hurt you. You have no idea how many people I have on my side in this city.” That was all he needed to stick it out.

1662415_10152601348484056_2099386203_nDear Heavenly Father, All I can say as I remember the many times You were with Randy and I at every turn, through every move we made, is thank you. And You are with us, still. You are amazing. You are God and we follow You with all that is in us. We see You in all we do. We expect You to be around every corner. We trust in You alone. Thank you. Be with us, still…
In Jesus Name, Amen

IT’S GREEK TO ME? NOT ANYMORE!

God’s Acts…

How do you explain God and what He has done for us to those who have done seemingly well at putting Him on a shelf with other gods they worship? How do you say to the church at large who looks, acts and talks just like the world around them that Jesus should be LORD of their lives. We have come to a state of mind in God’s church where His people no longer affect society…society has infected the church. So, the few who still lean heavily on God’s Word as Truth, with no watering down of the integrity of what God says to us about Him, are heartbroken. God teaches us to be saddened by this heart condition.

This isn’t new. Paul is heartbroken over what he sees in Athens. Paul is angry. I’m angry. People have a little knowledge about gods in general. So, they sit around an analyze, gossip even, about all that is going on around them without addressing the real problem. They don’t know GOD!

They even have a god named “THE GOD NOBODY KNOWS”. That might sound silly to us. But the world is falling prey to this same silliness. Anything goes. All sin is accepted without repentance. The meaning of repentance is to turn around, go the opposite direction! We sin, we get a “bless your heart” then go on our merry way doing the same things that made us sin-sick in the first place. We are sick and don’t do anything to change our ways, to try to be healthier. Doctors tell us we must change our lifestyles to have a “better quality of life”. If we want to live longer, we do it…physically. But what about spiritually, which is at the center of our being?

Unforgiven, unresolved sin is just like a cancer that we allow to run free, bring us down and eventually kill us. Our quality of life is diminished daily. Our relationships with others are affected and sometimes our sickness is “caught” by others we infect who live close to us.

How do we explain that GOD is God and all others, especially ourselves, are not? Paul does it well. We can learn a lot from his “talk” to the Greeks…

Acts 17, The Message
Athens
16 The longer Paul waited in Athens for Silas and Timothy, the angrier he got—all those idols! The city was a junkyard of idols.

17-18 He discussed it with the Jews and other like-minded people at their meeting place. And every day he went out on the streets and talked with anyone who happened along. He got to know some of the Epicurean and Stoic intellectuals pretty well through these conversations. Some of them dismissed him with sarcasm: “What an airhead!” But others, listening to him go on about Jesus and the resurrection, were intrigued: “That’s a new slant on the gods. Tell us more.”

19-21 These people got together and asked him to make a public presentation over at the Areopagus, where things were a little quieter. They said, “This is a new one on us. We’ve never heard anything quite like it. Where did you come up with this anyway? Explain it so we can understand.” Downtown Athens was a great place for gossip. There were always people hanging around, natives and tourists alike, waiting for the latest tidbit on most anything.

22-23 So Paul took his stand in the open space at the Areopagus and laid it out for them. “It is plain to see that you Athenians take your religion seriously. When I arrived here the other day, I was fascinated with all the shrines I came across. And then I found one inscribed, to the god nobody knows. I’m here to introduce you to this God so you can worship intelligently, know who you’re dealing with.

24-29 “The God who made the world and everything in it, this Master of sky and land, doesn’t live in custom-made shrines or need the human race to run errands for him, as if he couldn’t take care of himself. He makes the creatures; the creatures don’t make him. Starting from scratch, he made the entire human race and made the earth hospitable, with plenty of time and space for living so we could seek after God, and not just grope around in the dark but actually find him. He doesn’t play hide-and-seek with us. He’s not remote; he’s near. We live and move in him, can’t get away from him! One of your poets said it well: ‘We’re the God-created.’ Well, if we are the God-created, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to think we could hire a sculptor to chisel a god out of stone for us, does it?

30-31 “God overlooks it as long as you don’t know any better—but that time is past. The unknown is now known, and he’s calling for a radical life-change. He has set a day when the entire human race will be judged and everything set right. And he has already appointed the judge, confirming him before everyone by raising him from the dead.”

32-34 At the phrase “raising him from the dead,” the listeners split: Some laughed at him and walked off making jokes; others said, “Let’s do this again. We want to hear more.” But that was it for the day, and Paul left. There were still others, it turned out, who were convinced then and there, and stuck with Paul—among them Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris.

What do we learn?
–Repent, be saved by the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, receive the power of the Holy Spirit immediately to turn around and go a different way with different ways of thinking and behaving. Be free to be all the God intended for us to be from the beginning of time. That’s radical life-change.

–Paul’s message will help us to explain what we know about God, too!

–God will not let go of us. He loves us that much!

Dear Heavenly Father, Your Word breathes new, focused life into our hearts, minds and souls. We love You with all that is in us. We are heartbroken by the sin that destroys. I repent of all that has broken Your heart in my life. By the power of Your Holy Spirit living in and through me, help me to turn around and go Your way, leaving my old way behind for good. In Jesus Name and by His power, Amen I believe.

THE DANGER OF RELIGION VS. RELATIONSHIP

God’s Acts

In our experience as pastors over the years, we find that it is easier to help people into a wonderful, freeing relationship with Jesus Christ who have never been to church than to help those who have a little knowledge about the Bible, a lot of knowledge about the rules of “how to do church” and are merely impressed as Jesus but seemingly have little ongoing relationship with Him. Odd, isn’t it?

Paul knows this scenario well. He is going from town to town, city to city, spreading the Good News. His opponents? The hard-line Jews who refuse Truth as told in the Scriptures they have read all of their lives. No, this journey on earth of Truth telling will never be easy. But worth it? YES…to Paul and to us.

Keep telling the Truth about the most important relationship we will ever have…with Jesus Christ! He is the only way to God, our Father who loved us first and loves us still. Lay aside what you have been “brought up with” for awhile and just think about Jesus. Consider the enormity of what God has done for us through Jesus.

Acts 17, The Message
4-5 Some of them were won over and joined ranks with Paul and Silas, among them a great many God-fearing Greeks and a considerable number of women from the aristocracy. But the hard-line Jews became furious over the conversions. Mad with jealousy, they rounded up a bunch of brawlers off the streets and soon had an ugly mob terrorizing the city as they hunted down Paul and Silas.

5-7 They broke into Jason’s house, thinking that Paul and Silas were there. When they couldn’t find them, they collared Jason and his friends instead and dragged them before the city fathers, yelling hysterically, “These people are out to destroy the world, and now they’ve shown up on our doorstep, attacking everything we hold dear! And Jason is hiding them, these traitors and turncoats who say Jesus is king and Caesar is nothing!”

8-9 The city fathers and the crowd of people were totally alarmed by what they heard. They made Jason and his friends post heavy bail and let them go while they investigated the charges.

Berea
10-12 That night, under cover of darkness, their friends got Paul and Silas out of town as fast as they could. They sent them to Berea, where they again met with the Jewish community. They were treated a lot better there than in Thessalonica. The Jews received Paul’s message with enthusiasm and met with him daily, examining the Scriptures to see if they supported what he said. A lot of them became believers, including many Greeks who were prominent in the community, women and men of influence.

13-15 But it wasn’t long before reports got back to the Thessalonian hard-line Jews that Paul was at it again, preaching the Word of God, this time in Berea. They lost no time responding, and created a mob scene there, too. With the help of his friends, Paul gave them the slip—caught a boat and put out to sea. Silas and Timothy stayed behind. The men who helped Paul escape got him as far as Athens and left him there. Paul sent word back with them to Silas and Timothy: “Come as quickly as you can!”

What do we learn?
–Even Paul (and Jesus) did not reach all people for Christ. BUT, he kept telling the Truth, wherever he went and did not give up.

Reflection: Do we give up too easily in hard times? Do we stop praying for loved ones who we feel will NEVER come into a relationship with Jesus?

Dear Heavenly Father, Your Word is all about You, our relationship with You and how You work through us to tell others about Your love for us. I am amazed You, the God of Creation, wants to be in a relationship with me, a speck on the world You created. But You do and I am grateful, eternally grateful. Thank you, Lord. Continue to be with us this day. I’m listening and watching. In Jesus Name, Amen

THIS JESUS…

God’s Acts

Thessalonica
17 1-3 They took the road south through Amphipolis and Apollonia to Thessalonica, where there was a community of Jews. Paul went to their meeting place, as he usually did when he came to a town, and for three Sabbaths running he preached to them from the Scriptures. He opened up the texts so they understood what they’d been reading all their lives: that the Messiah absolutely had to be put to death and raised from the dead—there were no other options—and that “this Jesus I’m introducing you to is that Messiah.”

This Jesus is THAT Messiah…

Isaiah 53, The Message

53 Who believes what we’ve heard and seen?
Who would have thought God’s saving power would look like this?
2-6 The servant grew up before God—a scrawny seedling,
a scrubby plant in a parched field.
There was nothing attractive about him,
nothing to cause us to take a second look.
He was looked down on and passed over,
a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand.
One look at him and people turned away.
We looked down on him, thought he was scum.
But the fact is, it was our pains he carried—
our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us.
We thought he brought it on himself,
that God was punishing him for his own failures.
But it was our sins that did that to him,
that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins!
He took the punishment, and that made us whole.
Through his bruises we get healed.
We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost.
We’ve all done our own thing, gone our own way.
And God has piled all our sins, everything we’ve done wrong,
on him, on him.
7-9 He was beaten, he was tortured,
but he didn’t say a word.
Like a lamb taken to be slaughtered
and like a sheep being sheared,
he took it all in silence.
Justice miscarried, and he was led off—
and did anyone really know what was happening?
He died without a thought for his own welfare,
beaten bloody for the sins of my people.
They buried him with the wicked,
threw him in a grave with a rich man,
Even though he’d never hurt a soul
or said one word that wasn’t true.
10 Still, it’s what God had in mind all along,
to crush him with pain.
The plan was that he give himself as an offering for sin
so that he’d see life come from it—life, life, and more life.
And God’s plan will deeply prosper through him.
11-12 Out of that terrible travail of soul,
he’ll see that it’s worth it and be glad he did it.
Through what he experienced, my righteous one, my servant,
will make many “righteous ones,”
as he himself carries the burden of their sins.
Therefore I’ll reward him extravagantly—
the best of everything, the highest honors—
Because he looked death in the face and didn’t flinch,
because he embraced the company of the lowest.
He took on his own shoulders the sin of the many,
he took up the cause of all the black sheep.

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We are all black sheep made white as snow because of THIS JESUS!

Accept, believe, grow in relationship with a daily conversation, with eyes fixed on THIS JESUS who died for us and lives again. THIS JESUS IS coming back, you know.

yes-I-believe

Dear Heavenly Father, We repent of going our own way and invite You to take over all our heart, mind and soul. Guide and direct us with Your Holy Spirit. Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking our sins on your shoulders. Thank you for redeeming us and setting us free. There are not enough words in the world to express our gratitude. So, I give You, me.
In Jesus Name, Amen

GOD MAKES ALL THINGS GOOD…

Singing to a captive audience!

God’s Acts…

When Paul writes to the Romans and says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them”, (Rom 8:28, NLT) he is speaking from experience! When doing the work of God, there will be hard times that will end well because God works through it all. So, if you are in a messing situation at present, know that God knows and is already at work and will provide a way out, a look up and a life with a good ending. “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, than to trust and obey.”

Paul and Silas have healed a fortune teller of possession of an evil spirit. The owners of the fortune teller do not like this one bit for they were making a of money from her “telling”. They are beaten and thrown into jail, with a chance to mention that in the Roman colony they are in, that they are also Roman citizens. Here’s what God did to work all things for good…

Acts 16, The Message
22-24 The judges went along with the mob, had Paul and Silas’s clothes ripped off and ordered a public beating. After beating them black-and-blue, they threw them into jail, telling the jailkeeper to put them under heavy guard so there would be no chance of escape. He did just that—threw them into the maximum security cell in the jail and clamped leg irons on them.

25-26 Along about midnight, Paul and Silas were at prayer and singing a robust hymn to God. The other prisoners couldn’t believe their ears. Then, without warning, a huge earthquake! The jailhouse tottered, every door flew open, all the prisoners were loose.

27-28 Startled from sleep, the jailer saw all the doors swinging loose on their hinges. Assuming that all the prisoners had escaped, he pulled out his sword and was about to do himself in, figuring he was as good as dead anyway, when Paul stopped him: “Don’t do that! We’re all still here! Nobody’s run away!”

29-31 The jailer got a torch and ran inside. Badly shaken, he collapsed in front of Paul and Silas. He led them out of the jail and asked, “Sirs, what do I have to do to be saved, to really live?” They said, “Put your entire trust in the Master Jesus. Then you’ll live as you were meant to live—and everyone in your house included!”

32-34 They went on to spell out in detail the story of the Master—the entire family got in on this part. They never did get to bed that night. The jailer made them feel at home, dressed their wounds, and then—he couldn’t wait till morning!—was baptized, he and everyone in his family. There in his home, he had food set out for a festive meal. It was a night to remember: He and his entire family had put their trust in God; everyone in the house was in on the celebration.

35-36 At daybreak, the court judges sent officers with the instructions, “Release these men.” The jailer gave Paul the message, “The judges sent word that you’re free to go on your way. Congratulations! Go in peace!”

37 But Paul wouldn’t budge. He told the officers, “They beat us up in public and threw us in jail, Roman citizens in good standing! And now they want to get us out of the way on the sly without anyone knowing? Nothing doing! If they want us out of here, let them come themselves and lead us out in broad daylight.”

38-40 When the officers reported this, the judges panicked. They had no idea that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens. They hurried over and apologized, personally escorted them from the jail, and then asked them if they wouldn’t please leave the city. Walking out of the jail, Paul and Silas went straight to Lydia’s house, saw their friends again, encouraged them in the faith, and only then went on their way.

What do we learn?
–When all seems lost…know God will prevail. The work He starts in you will be finished as long as, through it all, we trust and obey.

Reflection: Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to lead in bad times as well as good times? My present circumstances do not define who I am but what God will do in and through me. Do I sing His praises even in the bad times, with gratitude and thanksgiving?

i sing because

Dear Heavenly Father, We bring all of us to You. Save us from ourselves. Help us to see beyond the circumstance by lifting our eyes up, gently lifting our chins with Your precious hand, to look into Your face of mercy and grace. Help us to know You know and care. Turn our mess into a message for Your Glory and praise. In Jesus Name, Amen

THE MACEDONIAN CALL!

God’s Acts…

When we think we know what we are doing, God intervenes with more specifics. We can stop and obey or keep going our own way. Paul is a Type A person…going, going, going…until God stops him in a dream and gives him a new travel itinerary. These course corrections in his journey led him to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ to the Europeans.

What is good to note, however, that Paul did not stop working to encourage the churches all around the countryside until the Macedonian call. He did not wait on God’s call but kept working until God took him in another direction. Time was not wasted. A new recruit, Timothy, was brought on board. Timothy later was trained to train others exponentially in preaching the salvation of Jesus Christ. (See 2 Timothy 2:2)

Acts 16, The Message
A Dream Gave Paul His Map
16 1-3 Paul came first to Derbe, then Lystra. He found a disciple there by the name of Timothy, son of a devout Jewish mother and Greek father. Friends in Lystra and Iconium all said what a fine young man he was. Paul wanted to recruit him for their mission, but first took him aside and circumcised him so he wouldn’t offend the Jews who lived in those parts. They all knew that his father was Greek.

4-5 As they traveled from town to town, they presented the simple guidelines the Jerusalem apostles and leaders had come up with. That turned out to be most helpful. Day after day the congregations became stronger in faith and larger in size.

6-8 They went to Phrygia, and then on through the region of Galatia. Their plan was to turn west into Asia province, but the Holy Spirit blocked that route. So they went to Mysia and tried to go north to Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus wouldn’t let them go there either. Proceeding on through Mysia, they went down to the seaport Troas.

9-10 That night Paul had a dream: A Macedonian stood on the far shore and called across the sea, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” The dream gave Paul his map. We went to work at once getting things ready to cross over to Macedonia. All the pieces had come together. We knew now for sure that God had called us to preach the good news to the Europeans.

What do we learn?
–Paul kept working at what was given him to do until God told him to do otherwise. We work until God tells us to change course. The mission is in God’s control. He knows what is best for those we serve and and He knows what is ahead.

What happened in Macedonia?

Acts 16, The Message
11-12 Putting out from the harbor at Troas, we made a straight run for Samothrace. The next day we tied up at New City and walked from there to Philippi, the main city in that part of Macedonia and, even more importantly, a Roman colony. We lingered there several days.

13-14 On the Sabbath, we left the city and went down along the river where we had heard there was to be a prayer meeting. We took our place with the women who had gathered there and talked with them. One woman, Lydia, was from Thyatira and a dealer in expensive textiles, known to be a God-fearing woman. As she listened with intensity to what was being said, the Master gave her a trusting heart—and she believed!

15 After she was baptized, along with everyone in her household, she said in a surge of hospitality, “If you’re confident that I’m in this with you and believe in the Master truly, come home with me and be my guests.” We hesitated, but she wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Answering the Macedonian call brought new believers to Christ and influential people to join the mission of telling the known world about Him.

Reflection:
Am I willing to change course if God says move? What is my Macedonian call today?

macedonian call

Dear Heavenly Father, Speak to our hearts for we are listening to You. We will work at what we are doing until You say to move. We are Yours, Lord. Everything as are and all that is in us is Yours. We love You because You love us more than we can imagine. Be with us. Continue to call out to Your people!
In Jesus Name, Amen

Remember the old hymn that as children we really didn’t realize what it meant?…Well, now you know.

There’s a call comes ringing o’er the restless wave,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
There are souls to rescue, there are souls to save,
Send the light! Send the light!

Send the light, the blessed Gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessed Gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!

We have heard the Macedonian call today,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
And a golden off’ring at the cross we lay,
Send the light! Send the light!

Let us pray that grace may everywhere abound,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
And a Christlike spirit everywhere be found,
Send the light! Send the light!

Let us not grow weary in the work of love,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
