THIS HAS TO BE…THE SON OF GOD!

The Good News!

We hear Jesus’ name called out in the heat of anger, swearing and using His name as a curse from unbelievers. We shudder. As believers we swear using, what we think are “kinder” words, but still swear in anger. We mock the Name of Jesus using any word that comes close to His Name, no matter what. When I read Mark’s words of how Jesus was mocked, even while He was raised up on that rough wooden structure, fashioned in a cross, held their by nails, in excruciating pain and agony, I am ashamed for myself and others. Do we not know this has to be the Son of God, Our Creator, Our LORD? Read on, slowly and carefully, putting ourselves at the scene of this horrendous event…

Mark 15, The Message

The Crucifixion
21 There was a man walking by, coming from work, Simon from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. They made him carry Jesus’ cross.

22-24 The soldiers brought Jesus to Golgotha, meaning “Skull Hill.” They offered him a mild painkiller (wine mixed with myrrh), but he wouldn’t take it. And they nailed him to the cross. They divided up his clothes and threw dice to see who would get them.

25-30 They nailed him up at nine o’clock in the morning. The charge against him—the king of the jews—was printed on a poster. Along with him, they crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left. People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament: “You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you’re really God’s Son, come down from that cross!”

31-32 The high priests, along with the religion scholars, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him: “He saved others—but he can’t save himself! Messiah, is he? King of Israel? Then let him climb down from that cross. We’ll all become believers then!” Even the men crucified alongside him joined in the mockery.

33-34 At noon the sky became extremely dark. The darkness lasted three hours. At three o’clock, Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

35-36 Some of the bystanders who heard him said, “Listen, he’s calling for Elijah.” Someone ran off, soaked a sponge in sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.”

37-39 But Jesus, with a loud cry, gave his last breath. At that moment the Temple curtain ripped right down the middle. When the Roman captain standing guard in front of him saw that he had quit breathing, he said, “This has to be the Son of God!”

People who probably once praised Him as he rode a donkey through the streets days earlier, now jeered, “Save yourself, if you’re really God’s Son!”

“He saved others–but he can’t save himself!” This statement is probably the most ironic of all. Jesus the Christ, Messiah, that the Jews longed for over the centuries of silence, is DOING just that…sacrificing Himself, so that they would be saved! “We’ll ALL become believers then!”, they mocked, telling Him to come down from the cross to prove His kingship. Really? Guess what? ALL can become believers now that Jesus has died for ALL! Once and for ALL!

God must abandoned His Son in the process of setting us free…for a little while…about 3 days. Why? Because Jesus has taken on all the sin of the world that is and is to come, and God cannot be in the same space as sin. God cannot even look upon sin. So He must look away. But, God has given Jesus the Power as His Son to complete the mission. Jesus defeats sin by taking it all upon Himself, even refusing a pain killer to get this momentous task finished. He dies, taking on all our sin. Your sin. MY sin. ALL sin. Forever.

When it looks as if the evil one has won, Jesus becomes the victor! Forever.

“When the Roman captain standing guard in front of him saw that he had quit breathing, he said, “This has to be the Son of God!”

Yes, Yes, HE IS INDEED!

And there’s more…tomorrow!

Dear Heavenly Father, We read Your Word slowly and thoughtfully and remember what You have truly done for us, driven by a perfect love that is beyond our wildest thinking! You came to save us, to restore us to a wonderful relationship where we walk with You, talk with You, and listen in eagerness to every word in this life until we see You and be with You in our final home. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are the Son of our Father, God! Heavenly Father, You are God and we are not. May we never forget. We repent.
In Jesus Name, be with us, Amen

POWERFUL SILENCE

The Good News!

Have you ever been in a situation where if you said anything it would probably be wrong? Sometimes saying nothing says everything. There is great power in silence. Jesus, tied up, beaten, mocked with his blood stained clothes ripped off…says nothing in his defense. It is as if all of heaven went silent. Did the angels, who were at the ready to rescue, hold their breath as they watched the Son of God being nailed to a cross? Was all of heaven focused on God’s face to receive on order to rescue His Son?

The order never came. God was silent. His will to save us must be accomplished. The sacrifice of His One and Only Son, the Perfect One, must die for our sin. Yes, God was silent. Jesus was silent. Both knew the mission must be completed.

Mark 15, The Message
15 At dawn’s first light, the high priests, with the religious leaders and scholars, arranged a conference with the entire Jewish Council. After tying Jesus securely, they took him out and presented him to Pilate.

2-3 Pilate asked him, “Are you the ‘King of the Jews’?”

He answered, “If you say so.” The high priests let loose a barrage of accusations.

4-5 Pilate asked again, “Aren’t you going to answer anything? That’s quite a list of accusations.” Still, he said nothing. Pilate was impressed, really impressed.

6-10 It was a custom at the Feast to release a prisoner, anyone the people asked for. There was one prisoner called Barabbas, locked up with the insurrectionists who had committed murder during the uprising against Rome. As the crowd came up and began to present its petition for him to release a prisoner, Pilate anticipated them: “Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?” Pilate knew by this time that it was through sheer spite that the high priests had turned Jesus over to him.

11-12 But the high priests by then had worked up the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas. Pilate came back, “So what do I do with this man you call King of the Jews?”

13 They yelled, “Nail him to a cross!”

14 Pilate objected, “But for what crime?”

But they yelled all the louder, “Nail him to a cross!”

15 Pilate gave the crowd what it wanted, set Barabbas free and turned Jesus over for whipping and crucifixion.

16-20 The soldiers took Jesus into the palace (called Praetorium) and called together the entire brigade. They dressed him up in purple and put a crown plaited from a thornbush on his head. Then they began their mockery: “Bravo, King of the Jews!” They banged on his head with a club, spit on him, and knelt down in mock worship. After they had had their fun, they took off the purple cape and put his own clothes back on him. Then they marched out to nail him to the cross.

The gospel writer cannot bring himself to fully describe the horror of being nailed to a cross of rough wood. He is a bit allusive about the pain, agony and sheer torture and humiliation of humans the Romans put criminals through to make them a public example. Jesus did no wrong. He was not a criminal. But He was silent in His defense. Powerfully silent. He could have stopped it all. But he did not. He went through torture so our relationship with our Creator, God, Our Father, could be restored.

His mission to seek and to save lost, drowning in hope and despair, people then and now was worth all the pain and suffering He would go through. Do we really understand this? WE were worth HIS suffering, death, going to hell and back for us, as our Victor over sin and eternal destruction! We were/are worth His powerful silence! He allowed all that happened so that we might be set free from sins of our own selfishness, pride, greed, jealousy, and anything else that stands between God and us. WE were bought back, redeemed, at a high price!

Debt-free, if we believe. Wow. Why aren’t we living like we believe? Why does peace allude us? Why do our smiles of inner peace and joy escape us at times…in the rough times? Because God is God and we are not. BUT, we can be restored by turning our faces back to the Only One who can satisfy our souls. We can let Him show us His best way for us once more. We can repent.

1599606_10151990017606961_272388678_o

Dear Heavenly Father, To think we are not worth much is a ridiculous thought right now. The evil one is constantly making us feel less than, in our own eyes. That makes us serve less, be joy-less and have less peace. No more! Your Word reminds us how much You love and cherish Your created. Thank you for your powerful silence that took you to the cross for my sin and the sins of all who believe. There are not enough words for Your more than enough actions to restore our relationship with You. So hear my heart…
In Jesus Name, Amen

HE COULD NOT STAY AWAY!

The Good News!

Nothing is worse than someone you trust and respect, who is much wiser than you to warn you about something and later tell you, “I told you so.” Ugh, you feel awful, sick to your stomach when you do exactly what you said you would not do. You are sick at heart to fulfill this wise person’s warning and then get the “I told you so.”

No where do I see Jesus giving Peter the “I told you so” words of guilt. He just loves him. Maybe that’s why Peter is the only disciple who ran from the scene of capture but could NOT stay away from the trial of Jesus. Full of fear for Jesus, himself and all the others, he stayed near, out of love for his Master. Let us not be the ones who say to Peter, I told you so, either. We probably would have done the same…or worse.

Condemned to Death
53-54 They led Jesus to the Chief Priest, where the high priests, religious leaders, and scholars had gathered together. Peter followed at a safe distance until they got to the Chief Priest’s courtyard, where he mingled with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.

55-59 The high priests conspiring with the Jewish Council looked high and low for evidence against Jesus by which they could sentence him to death. They found nothing. Plenty of people were willing to bring in false charges, but nothing added up, and they ended up canceling each other out. Then a few of them stood up and lied: “We heard him say, ‘I am going to tear down this Temple, built by hard labor, and in three days build another without lifting a hand.’” But even they couldn’t agree exactly.

60-61 In the middle of this, the Chief Priest stood up and asked Jesus, “What do you have to say to the accusation?” Jesus was silent. He said nothing.

The Chief Priest tried again, this time asking, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed?”

62 Jesus said, “Yes, I am, and you’ll see it yourself:

The Son of Man seated
At the right hand of the Mighty One,
Arriving on the clouds of heaven.”
63-64 The Chief Priest lost his temper. Ripping his clothes, he yelled, “Did you hear that? After that do we need witnesses? You heard the blasphemy. Are you going to stand for it?”

They condemned him, one and all. The sentence: death.

65 Some of them started spitting at him. They blindfolded his eyes, then hit him, saying, “Who hit you? Prophesy!” The guards, punching and slapping, took him away.

The Rooster Crowed
66-67 While all this was going on, Peter was down in the courtyard. One of the Chief Priest’s servant girls came in and, seeing Peter warming himself there, looked hard at him and said, “You were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”

68 He denied it: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He went out on the porch. A rooster crowed.

69-70 The girl spotted him and began telling the people standing around, “He’s one of them.” He denied it again.

After a little while, the bystanders brought it up again. “You’ve got to be one of them. You’ve got ‘Galilean’ written all over you.”

71-72 Now Peter got really nervous and swore, “I never laid eyes on this man you’re talking about.” Just then the rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered how Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows twice, you’ll deny me three times.” He collapsed in tears.

Peter does not need more guilt heaped upon his destroyed soul, he need restoration. Jesus Christ gives him EXACTLY what Peter needs…in time. HIS time.

That is the lesson that jumps out at me today as we read this passage. Jesus testifies that He is the I AM while Peter looks on. The other disciples cut and ran from the scene. Peter ran but could not stay away. He came closer and closer. Mm. Jesus knew Peter’s heart. He knows our hearts, too. Jesus restores. He makes all things new.

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for Your Word that gives us new thoughts about Your greatness. We love you with all our hearts, minds and souls. We are coming closer and closer to You every day. Thank you for going through all the suffering to heal and restore us from our sin. Go with us this day. Help us to tell your story in ways others will know you more, too.
In Jesus Name, Amen

THE KISS OF DEATH

The Good News!

We use the “kiss of death” as an action for ending a relationship. It is also used in other ways today. I looked it up…

-When a woman you’re trying to get with delivers the fatal blow, signifying her interest only to be “friends” with you. –The Urban Dictionary.

-Something that is ultimately ruinous, destructive, or fatal: “Divorce was once a political kiss of death” (Ellen Goodman). Free Dictionary.

-The kiss of death (Italian: Il bacio della morte) is the sign given by a mafioso boss or capo that signifies that a member of the crime family has been marked for death, usually as a result of some perceived betrayal.

-an action or event that causes certain failure for an enterprise.
“it would be the kiss of death for the company if it could be proved that the food was unsafe”

-And from the online slang dictionary: something that destroys a person’s hopes. When my crush told me that I was a “trusted friend,” I knew that was the kiss of death.

Wow, right? The last one, “something that destroys a person’s hopes” is really meaningful for today.

The origin of the “kiss of death”, commonly used still, comes from the passage we are reading and meditating on today…read on…

Mark 14, The Message
A Gang of Ruffians
43-47 No sooner were the words out of his mouth when Judas, the one out of the Twelve, showed up, and with him a gang of ruffians, sent by the high priests, religion scholars, and leaders, brandishing swords and clubs. The betrayer had worked out a signal with them: “The one I kiss, that’s the one—seize him. Make sure he doesn’t get away.” He went straight to Jesus and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. The others then grabbed him and roughed him up. One of the men standing there unsheathed his sword, swung, and came down on the Chief Priest’s servant, lopping off the man’s ear.

48-50 Jesus said to them, “What is this, coming after me with swords and clubs as if I were a dangerous criminal? Day after day I’ve been sitting in the Temple teaching, and you never so much as lifted a hand against me. What you in fact have done is confirm the prophetic writings.” All the disciples cut and ran.

Jesus, the Son of God, had prayed in agony all night long, that this “cup” would be taken from him. This scene of betrayal of a “friend” was foretold in Scripture. Jesus knew it would happen. He knew who would deliver the kiss. Judas, who followed Jesus, watched on while He miraculously healed the lame, the sick and even raised the dead. Judas knew Jesus repaired broken hearts, restored hope in many lives, opened blind eyes and plugged ears to all who listened Who God, the Father is, was and is to come. But he wanted Jesus to take over the Roman world. He is greedy. Judas wanted things his way. He admired and was impressed by the power Jesus had, but he did not love Him. He did not love Who Jesus was. He was NOT impressed with his true mission to seek and to save the lost. The hopes of Judas were destroyed. This same Judas delivered the kiss of death. His relationship with Jesus was broken forever with that kiss. No hope for Judas.

Ah, but the story does not end there. Our hope is actually restored! Yes, Jesus was roughed up the minute the kiss was delivered as a sign of “He’s the One”. I’m sure Judas did not know just how significant those words were when he delivered that kiss. Jesus the Messiah, the One and Only, The Perfect Sacrifice, The Perfect Lamb of God accepted the “cup” of the will of His Heavenly Father and fulfilled the scriptures as the ONE who would died for our sins.

Jesus, our now Savior, accepted the beatings, the mocking and the final horrendous Roman torture of being literally nailed to a rough, ugly cross made of wood…fashioned by the Almighty from the beginning of creation. Jesus, the One and Only paid the debt of all sin for all time. He paid my debt. He paid yours. IF we only believe. Hope restored.

Do I behave as if I believe? Do I realize how much I’m worth to the One and Only who saved my soul? Do I live as a saved person?

Dear Heavenly Father, Wow. Again, there is so much here to think about. Your salvation for us came at a high price, so high it is hard to wrap our minds around it at times. Thank you, dear Lord for making a way for us to be in relationship with you…never to be broken. Go with us. We believe.
In Jesus Name, Amen

“SIT HERE WILE I PRAY”

“SIT HERE WHILE I PRAY”.

“SIT HERE WHILE I PRAY”

The Good News!

As I read this passage in Mark this morning, I have flashbacks of my childhood watching my Grandpa and Grandma Lacquement, kneeling every night at the couch after reading a passage of Scripture. I spent as much time with them as my parents would allow. I loved spending the night with my grandparents on their farm. I watched them work hard to keep the farm going. I watched my grandpa go to work as a carpenter, after the morning farm chores were done. I would wait on the front porch steps, looking for his truck to turn off Route 66 and make it’s way down their long dirt drive to the house. I followed him as he did the evening chores. Grandma would have a wonderful supper waiting.

Then after the sun went down, all went quiet. The TV was off. The Bibles were held in their laps and we knew to sit and be quiet while they read. Sometimes I got to read. Then it was time to scoot from sitting to kneeling before the Father in Heaven. Grandma began to pray, then it was my turn, then Grandpa finished. Many times before Grandpa finished praying I would fall asleep. So, “Sit here while I pray” has great meaning for me.

Mark 14, The Message
Gethsemane
32-34 They came to an area called Gethsemane. Jesus told his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him. He plunged into a sinkhole of dreadful agony. He told them, “I feel bad enough right now to die. Stay here and keep vigil with me.”

35-36 Going a little ahead, he fell to the ground and prayed for a way out: “Papa, Father, you can—can’t you?—get me out of this. Take this cup away from me. But please, not what I want—what do you want?”

37-38 He came back and found them sound asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, you went to sleep on me? Can’t you stick it out with me a single hour? Stay alert, be in prayer, so you don’t enter the danger zone without even knowing it. Don’t be naive. Part of you is eager, ready for anything in God; but another part is as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire.”

39-40 He then went back and prayed the same prayer. Returning, he again found them sound asleep. They simply couldn’t keep their eyes open, and they didn’t have a plausible excuse.

41-42 He came back a third time and said, “Are you going to sleep all night? No—you’ve slept long enough. Time’s up. The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up. Let’s get going. My betrayer has arrived.”

Grandpa prayed and thank God for his day. He always prayed for his church. He also prayed for the struggles he was facing and asked for God’s will. He got this example to pray from our Savior who prayed, in agony, for God’s perfect will.

Jesus knew what was going to happen very soon. His heart was heavy…”He plunged into a sinkhole of dreadful agony.” His battle was with the devil, the fallen angel himself, who thought he was about to win by killing Jesus, the Son of God. Was it the battle that Jesus was agonizing over, or the people he would leave behind? Was it dreading the brutality He knew He would face? We don’t know exactly but we do know this. He prayed for God’s will…”But please, not what I want–what do YOU want?”

The disciples sleep through this agony that our Savior was going through, anesthetized by the whole situation, it seems. They could not stay awake. Do we do that..sleep through our troubles? Mm.

The embattled prayer ends. Jesus knows God’s will. His betrayer is coming with the soldiers. Jesus wakes up his followers and says, “Let’s get going.”

How many times does Jesus have to come and wake us from a deep sleep of denial?

Dear Heavenly Father, Wow. Your Words have so much meaning and significance for all of us going through the good stuff as well as the tough stuff of life. It all, at this moment, seems so terribly small as we read this. You went to hell and back for us, experiencing pain and brutality beyond our comprehension, all so that we would have You, have life eternal and peace for the journey now. Wow. There are not enough words to give you the gratitude, praise and honor due to You. I humbly bow before You. I will remember and meditate on Your words in Your prayer all day long. Be with us. Keep us awake! Keep us going.
In Jesus Name, Amen

WHEN LIFE FALLS APART…

The Good News!

We talk a good line when everything is going well and plans fall into place the way we think they should. We praise God in the good times. We wonder why others do not. Our prayers are strong and passionate. Our demeanor is confident. Our words are bold, filled with “I would never deny Christ”…like Peter.

Mark 14, The Message

27-28 Jesus told them, “You’re all going to feel that your world is falling apart and that it’s my fault. There’s a Scripture that says,

I will strike the shepherd;
The sheep will go helter-skelter.
“But after I am raised up, I will go ahead of you, leading the way to Galilee.”

29 Peter blurted out, “Even if everyone else is ashamed of you when things fall to pieces, I won’t be.”

30 Jesus said, “Don’t be so sure. Today, this very night in fact, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

31 He blustered in protest, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you.” All the others said the same thing.

Jesus words here are so powerful! “You will FEEL your world is falling apart” and that it’s my fault.” Wow. Sit and meditate on just those words for a moment. Isn’t that our first reaction to our own “crashes” in this world? We FEEL. We blame God, ourselves or others. We ask why. We do this because we want to fix “it” as quickly as possible. Sometimes there is no fix. Sometimes we just have to go through something to gain more life by losing what is not good for us.

Jesus has more words that are just as powerful and commonly overlooked…”BUT after I’m raised up…(HE is the victor over death!)…I will go ahead of you…He is THERE before, during and after our crashes in life…LEADING THE WAY! Jesus, Messiah, our Emmanuel…God with us!…to “Galilee”…the place where we will meet up for life eternal, for peace everlasting, a place where we will finally see Him face to face. We WILL get to the other side of life’s stuff and be victorious with Him! Amazing love, mercy and grace will follow us.

Whatever we are going through, know this, God is there with us, leading the way through it, around it, or over it, but He is with us. If we let Him have His way, He will pick up all the pieces that fell apart and put them back together again in a brand new way, with all new stuff in us…in ways beyond our wildest dreams! He is our Savior, our One and Only Savior. The world cannot give us the kind of peace He can give us. Let Him lead the way…then follow!

484079_10152194894416718_1673326869_n

Dear Heavenly Father, Your Word takes our thoughts in a different direction than the normal sermons on this passage. We pray for those whose lives are in disarray this morning who need to know, without a doubt, that You are there with them. You are there for me and I thank You and praise You for leading the way through my own life stuff. I repent of grumblings, complaining and asking why and worse yet, blaming You for where You led me! I regret those times. It was a miserable state of feeling. Lord, help us not to trust these temporary feelings and place all our trust in You…at ALL times. In Jesus Name, Amen

My hope is built on nothing less,
than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ Name

On Christ the Solid Rock I stand…

THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB…

The Good News!

We come to the table to eat and drink and be filled with the meaning of the “last Passover supper” Jesus will share with his followers. The Passover meal is steeped in tradition, meaning and significance for the Jews (and now for all of us!) who were “passed over” from persecution and death, years earlier by the enemy who held them captive as slaves, by smearing the blood of a first choice lamb over the door of their homes. If they obeyed God in His specific directives, they were saved.

The thought occurs to me this morning that the Lamb of God among them, Jesus, the Christ, also protected his own from the enemy as he was taken to be crucified for their sins and ours. The enemy comes to take only Jesus, the leader. His followers ran and were protected from harm. The enemy could have taken them all out and killed them. But that was not God’s plan. The Lamb of God was sacrificed and His blood, His teachings, His perfect love, mercy and grace was smeared on their very hearts, minds and souls and they were passed over from harm…just as Jesus said they would. All except the betrayer, Judas, who did not believe.

“During my time here, I protected them by the power of the name you gave me. I guarded them so that not one was lost, except the one headed for destruction, as the Scriptures foretold.” –Jesus
(John 17:12, NLT in his prayer for his disciples.)

It is good for us to see, hear, taste, feel and touch the words and meaning of the following passage. Catch the significance for us today and be blessed!

Mark 14, The Message

“This Is My Body”
22 In the course of their meal, having taken and blessed the bread, he broke it and gave it to them. Then he said,

Take, this is my body.
23-24 Taking the chalice, he gave it to them, thanking God, and they all drank from it. He said,

This is my blood,
God’s new covenant,
Poured out for many people.
25 “I’ll not be drinking wine again until the new day when I drink it in the kingdom of God.”

26 They sang a hymn and then went directly to Mount Olives.

1555519_10152153197268903_1932343038_n

Dear Heavenly Father, All I can say is thank you! I feel like singing the age old hymn and rejoicing in our salvation by the blood of Lamb this morning. You are on my mind. You are in my heart. You are in charge of my soul. Thank you, Lord, thank you! Go with us this day. In Jesus Name, Amen

And they sang a hymn…
Would you be free from your burden of sin?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful power in the blood.
There is power, power, wonder-working power,
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder-working power,
In the precious blood of the Lamb…

Pursuing Your God-Sized Dream

I love this!

CSLewis-Quote-12_31_12

Psalm 37:4: Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

A year seems to be such a long time. When the year is young, we believe we can achieve certain dreams and goals. But then the busyness of life gets in the way of our plans, and we whittle down our dreams so we don’t disappoint ourselves. Sometimes we plan to resurrect a dream or a goal that we put on the shelf years ago, then we set it aside again. There is a reason we are drawn to certain dreams. God is the author of our dreams; He’s put His dreams in our spiritual DNA.

Psalm 139:14a: I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Not only does our Heavenly Father give us dreams, He enables us fulfill the dreams he has given us.

Imagine this, You have been invited to a wonderful dinner to celebrate someone you have known, loved and appreciated for many years who is being celebrated in his retirement. You want to go, but you left the company many years earlier with unresolved issues. You were maligned by a person who forced you out of the company so you wonder if that person is going to be there. If they are there, it will be awkward for you to see their face again. But the desire to honor the retiree is more powerful than the risk of seeing your enemy. So you go.

The evening is filled with an atmosphere of celebration and joy. It is a beautiful restaurant with great food and drink. Everyone is laughing as they reminisce about old times working together. You realize in the midst of the loud storytelling that the place you have been assigned to sit is next to an empty chair. Moments later, in walks the final guest…your mortal enemy who forced you out of the company with his lies and backstabbing! The empty chair next to you has been assigned to THAT person. Seriously, who put your enemy, your betrayer, right next to you? What were the planners of this event thinking? Forgiveness? Healing? Confrontation? Truth revealed?

Jesus understands.

Mark 14, The Message
12 On the first of the Days of Unleavened Bread, the day they prepare the Passover sacrifice, his disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations so you can eat the Passover meal?”

13-15 He directed two of his disciples, “Go into the city. A man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him. Ask the owner of whichever house he enters, ‘The Teacher wants to know, Where is my guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ He will show you a spacious second-story room, swept and ready. Prepare for us there.”

16 The disciples left, came to the city, found everything just as he had told them, and prepared the Passover meal.

17-18 After sunset he came with the Twelve. As they were at the supper table eating, Jesus said, “I have something hard but important to say to you: One of you is going to hand me over to the conspirators, one who at this moment is eating with me.”

19 Stunned, they started asking, one after another, “It isn’t me, is it?”

20-21 He said, “It’s one of the Twelve, one who eats with me out of the same bowl. In one sense, it turns out that the Son of Man is entering into a way of treachery well-marked by the Scriptures—no surprises here. In another sense, the man who turns him in, turns traitor to the Son of Man—better never to have been born than do this!”

“EATING OUT OF THE SAME BOWL..”
Jesus knows his betrayer well. They have shared everything, camped out together, eaten together many times along the way to accomplishing the mission Jesus was sent to be and do. Jesus also knows his betrayer’s heart. He has known it all along, yet he eats out of the same bowl with him. Jesus tells him He is not surprised at His betrayal, but He is still saddened by it. “I have something hard but important to say to you”…

I am surprised at the guilty consciences, but innocence, of the rest of the followers gathered around the last meal, the Last Passover Meal, Jesus will spend with them on earth. “It isn’t me, is it?”

We “eat out of the same bowl” with Jesus as we live this life for Him, to glorify HIM, to tell of His love, mercy and grace, to be a witness of all He has done, is doing, and will do in everyone’s lives if they believe. As believers, we know all the right words. But is our heart right with Him? He knows our hearts. He knows us from the inside out. He does not care about what our outward appearance might be but looks at our heart’s motivation and condition.

Does our behavior line up with what we say we believe? Who are we inside? We must ask ourselves every day, “It isn’t me, is it?” as we evaluate ourselves before the Lord. Is there someone we need to forgive, whether they ask for it or not? Is there something we have not done that God is telling us to do? Pray, Lord, break my heart of those things that break Yours and we will know where we stand, for the Lord will answer this sincere prayer quickly.

Love will overflow. No matter what the circumstance. It isn’t me, is it? Not anymore. We believe. And will listen and obey.
In Jesus Name, Amen
