THE SPLASH…EVERYONE GETS WET!

We are at the pool on a hot day. It is a scene that repeats itself when there is water, a hot day and rambunctious kids who want to get wet in the quickest way possible. They make a running, flying leap into the pool to make the biggest splash possible. EVERYONE gets wet who is close by, in or out of the water! That’s just how it is.

We sometimes get impatient and run ahead of God and make a flying leap into the pool of life and the resulting circumstances that we created “splashes” onto everyone else. It is not just us that deals with our actions. They spill over to others around us. Others either laugh it off or get angry at “getting wet” by our actions.

God has made a lasting, forever covenant with Abram about the descendants he will have…”But Sarai, Abram’s wife had no children.” (Genesis 16:1, NLT) “But Sarai”…did not believe. She is past child bearing age. Sarai is tired of waiting on God. “So Sarai took her servant an Egyptian woman named Hagar, and gave her to Abram so she could bear his children.” Genesis 16:2

THE BLAME GAME
To justify her actions, Sarai blames God…”The LORD has kept me from having any children,” Sarai said to Abram. “Go and sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have children through her.” And Abram agreed. He did. Sarai has made a big splash and the overflow is pouring over others.

“So Abram slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When Hagar knew she was pregnant, she began to treat her mistress Sarai with contempt. The Sarai said to Abram, ‘It’s all your fault!’ Now this servant of mine is pregnant, and she despises me, though I myself gave her the privilege of sleeping with you. The LORD will make you pay for doing this to me!'”

Abram turns the blame back to Sarai. “Since she is your servant, you may deal with her as you see fit.” So Sarai treated her harshly and Hagar ran away.

Everyone gets wet with Sarai’s splash of disobedience to God.

We are taken aback by Sarai’s lack of judgement…but we are guilty, too. (All have sinned and fall short…”) We think our decisions in life only affect us so we boldly, sometimes without thinking, react to a situation with actions that ultimately affect everyone around us.

THE GOOD NEWS…GOD!

God intervenes and helps us through these missteps in life and works to make all things good for those called to do His will and fulfill His purpose. It is all about God at the end of each day. That’s way we must stay focused on Him, trusting Him, waiting on Him, working until He comes and changes the situation…or not. Working ahead, taking matters into our own hands, will only lead to misery for us AND those around us.

Only if…Sarai had wanted just one more year. How many “only ifs” do we have in our own lives?

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for seeing us through our lives, in good times and bad. Thank you for letting us live with our own mess until we come back into focus with Your will and plan for us. Thank you for cleaning up after us, with the work of the Cross of Jesus Christ, drying us off after our own big splashes and sending us back on the journey to walk with You again. Thank You for loving us more than we deserve. In Jesus Name, Amen

GOD SAYS, “YOU CAN BE SURE”!

GOD’S CHARACTER WITHIN ABRAM IS SHOWN:
War breaks out all around Lot. Lot, his family and all he owns is taken as prisoners of war. Abram comes to his rescue, even chasing the enemy back and regaining possession of all the goods taken. He is honored by the local king of Sodom who wants to reward him, but Abram, a man of God, replied, “I have solemnly promised the LORD, God, Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich!’ All I’ll accept is what these young men of mine have already eaten. But give a share of the good to my allies–Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.” Genesis 14:22-24, NLT

GOD NOTICES…
“Afterward the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.” Genesis 15:1, NLT

ABRAM REMINDS GOD OF THE PAIN IN THE WAIT FOR A SON..
“But Abram replied, ‘O Sovereign LORD, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son?'” Genesis 15:2, NLT

THE WAIT
We do not know for sure why God made Abram wait so long for a son. God knows what is best for us, still. God is doing a work within Abram as he waits for God to bless him with descendants that will be “too many to count” like the stars, but yet, Abram waits. And God protects. God also visits Abram with reminders in elaborate ways of his promise with comforting words, “You can be sure…”

Many of us still wait today for God. In our hustle and bustle of time just doing life, we also spend, what seems to us, an enormous amount of time waiting. We wait for a situation to change, a better financial picture, a better job to come along, people to come around to our way of thinking, a better home, waiting to go home, a better car, a brighter future and circumstance. Always waiting…for “someday”. Maybe God is waiting for us.

What if we spent more time thinking about…right now, and be grateful for now. What if we took more time to relax in God’s “You can be sure.”? What would we accomplish TODAY if we spent less time worrying and waiting and more time doing God’s best in us for today? What more would be accomplished, knowing that God is with us today.

I am reminded of Jesus words, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34″So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

Let’s spend less time waiting and more time seeking our Savior with His message of “You can be sure…”

Dear Heavenly Father, You alone, can make us be very sure. We are sure of Your love for us. We are sure that Your Son died and rose again for us. We are sure of Your constant care for us. We are sure that You want what is best for us. We are sure. We believe and trust. We love you back, dear Lord. Thank you for today. In Jesus Name, Amen

WHERE THE GRASS IS GREENER…

WHERE THE GRASS IS GREENER…

The grass is always greener…over the septic tank. Literally. We had a big yard to play in growing up in Oklahoma. In the summer when the hot sun hit the earth, all the grass became dry, dusty and yellow…except for one area. This large area was a lush, soft, and very green. As kids were attracted to it until our folks told us WHY it is so green. There was a resounding, collective, “EWW” from all of us to discover that the big nasty underneath the surface made it so green!

Abram and Lot, with all their family, animals and stuff have become too crowded. Abram, in his wisdom, tells Lot, his nephew that the time has come to separate. Abram gives Lot blessing of choosing which direction to move and settle. Lot chooses the greener, more fertile land to the east. Abram stayed in the land of Canaan. Lot moves to Sodom. “The people of this area were unusually wicked and sinned greatly against the LORD.” Genesis 13:13, NLT

Beware of where the grass appears to be greener! Lot, who thought he was choosing the best land for himself, leaving his uncle Abram in the dust behind, soon finds out that the underlying wickedness of his new location has the ability to overtake him.

God’s Story uses this episode in the life of Abram to show us the character of Himself in Abram. Abram gives Lot a choice. God gives us choice. Abram latter has to rescue Lot because of his choice. God comes to our rescue because of our choices. We are redeemed when we realize that our choices might not be God’s best for us and repent and seek His will rather than our own. Because God has the ability to work all things good for those who are called to fulfill His purpose, he helps us focus and get back on track, where the grass might not be as green, but His place is where we need to be. Mm, something to think about…

Dear Heavenly Father, We just want to stop and thank you for bringing us through all the times in our lives when we jumped to greener grass but found it had a stench underneath the surface. You redeemed us, moved us, and brought us closer to You, while teaching us more wisdom in the journey. Thank you for salvation, protection and provision all along the way. You are the God of Abram. You are the God for us now. You have not moved! You do not change. We do. In Jesus Name, Amen

BACK TEN SPACES!

BACK TEN SPACES!

It’s fun to play the board game, Life…until one bad move tells you to go back to where you began. This is what happened to Abram. In a desperate move, even though he was rich, he went to Egypt to wait out the current famine. In another desperate move, he told the Egyptians his beautiful wife Sarai was his sister, so he would not be killed. His plan worked…for awhile. His wife was taken into the harem of the Pharaoh, his life was spared, but because of this “bad move” of deception, God sent a plague over Pharaoh’s household. Abram and family were sent out of Egypt…”under armed escort.” Genesis 12, NLT (Read the whole story.)

God, in his mercy, spared Abram. Abram could have been killed for this misstep, this bad move, on his journey to do God’s will and fulfill God’s purpose. Is this story about the sin of Abram or the power of God to work all things good to HIS purpose? I think the latter. Or may both?

Abram goes back to where he began the journey “and there he again worshiped the LORD.” Genesis 13:4, NLT

In desperate times, what will we do? Will we trust God or yield to our sin nature to do whatever WE can to alleviate or avoid a bad situation or circumstance? When we trust ourselves and fail, we must learn from it. We must go back to where we began and talk it over with God, in repentant worship and let Him work the details of repairing our relationship with Him and living with the consequences of our bad move. He WILL work all things out for good for those called according to His purpose! (Romans 8:28) God is always watching over us. He was watching over Abram and protected him even though he made one really bad move.

God is sovereign. He knows us well. And He still loves and protects us. But we must learn from our “bad moves”. Before we “get over it” and move on, as many tell us to do from a bad experience, God’s story reminds us to first go back and worship God with a repentant heart. THEN…move on.

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for your love and forgiveness. Thank you for teaching us with mercy and grace when we make a bad move. Thank you for rescuing us before we even knew we needed it. We repent. We worship You and You alone. Above all is You and we must protect our relationship with You. We trust and rely fully on You. For everything. In Jesus Name, Amen

THERE’S ALWAYS A REASON…

THERE’S ALWAYS A REASON…

Abram’s call to leave the life he had behind had a reason. There is always a reason for us, as well. God will call, then equip, then send with a clear purpose, a bottom line, if you will, designed His way, worked out in His time to fulfill HIS plan. We do not jump ahead. We should not “help God out”. We need to just trust and obey. Sometimes we over-think. We will learn more in trusting and obeying than jumping ahead, for God will make us move back 10 spaces in the game of life, to show His power, and redirect you to His best for you. It’s all about God. We must always ask, “What do YOU want, LORD, God our Father?”

“I will cause you to become the father of a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and I will make you a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. All the families of the earth will be blessed by you.”

I AM tells Abram, “I will…”
Wow! God’s plan is outlined for Abram. The “bottom-line” is expressed. So Abram departs “as the LORD had instructed him…”
He took his family and his stuff that would sustain them on the journey. After awhile they set up camp.

“Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, ‘I am going to give this land to your offspring,’ And Abram built an altar there to commemorate the LORD’s visit. After that, Abram traveled southward and set up camp in the hill country between Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar and worshiped the LORD.” Genesis 12, NLT

Abram obeys God’s call and embraces His plan. As God guides, Abram worships. He worships God at every step.

How exciting to be in the center of God’s will, know it and respond with pure worship! At every step in the journey, God guides. Lesson to be learned is this: As God guides, He provides. He shows the way. He protects. As we respond with worship, God responds with the next step in His plan. Mmm. Something to think about today.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We “camp out” in worship of You as we meditate on your word. While waiting, we will work diligently at the work you have provided for us to do with enthusiasm and gratefulness as worship back to You. We give you our lives, trusting and obeying. In Jesus Name, Amen
