TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #8: RUN HARD!

Every morning I write in my journal of pray this statement, “Lift us up to higher ground thinking so that we will behave in ways that please You and is helpful to others.” Why? Because I am so human. I need to remind myself that life is not about myself. We are here to bring glory to God, put a smile on His face, and help others to do the same. We must run from anything that brings us down to worldview thinking.

Paul’s words to Timothy are full of wisdom and determination:
(Read all of chapter 6 and yesterday’s comments…)

“But you, Timothy, man of God: Run for your life from all this. Pursue a righteous life–a life of wonder, faith, love, steadiness, courtesy. Run hard and fast in the faith. Seize the eternal life, the life you were called to, the life you so fervently embraced in the presence of so many witnesses.”

Why?

“I’m charging you before the life-giving God and before Christ, who took his stand before Pontius Pilate and didn’t give an inch: Keep this command to the letter, and don’t slack off. Our Master, Jesus Christ, is on his way. He’ll show up right on time, his arrival guaranteed by the Blessed and Undisputed Ruler, High King, High God.”

And one more plea that touches our hearts this morning…

“And oh, my dear Timothy, guard the treasure you were given! Guard it with your life. Avoid the talk-show religion and the practiced confusion of the so-called experts. People caught up in a lot of talk can miss the whole point of faith.”

“Overwhelming grace keep you!”
1 Timothy 6, Msg

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #7: AVOID THE EPIDEMIC!

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #7: AVOID THE EPIDEMIC!

My husband pastored a church that was greatly gifted in the skill of gossip. Yes, you read it right. It was truly an epidemic with this particular group. Truth about others was so distorted and such a habit that they believed their own lies. The “sickness” was so bad and they had lived with it so long, they didn’t even know they were sick!

After a few sermons on this issue, a perturbed man walked into his office Monday morning and declared, “What I’m about to tell you about a person, I know is true, so it isn’t gossip! Is it?” It was the tone of voice that prompted my wise husband to say, “Is that person here in this room ready to hear it, too?” The man turned on his heel and quickly walked out in a huff. The man had no basis for his “truth”.

Eugene Peterson boldly expresses Paul’s words of warning to Timothy about this epidemic of power, money and greed, the things that humans use to “get ahead” in this world but has no place in God’s church.

“These are the things I want you to teach and preach. If you have leaders there who teach otherwise, who refuse the solid words of our Master Jesus and this godly instruction, tag them for what they are: ignorant windbags who infect the air with germs of envy, controversy, bad-mouthing, suspicious rumors. Eventually there’s an epidemic of backstabbing, and truth is but a distant memory. They think religion is a way to make a fast buck.” 1 Timothy 6, Msg

On the other hand…Paul speaks of the “upside down kingdom” that Jesus taught us all to live…

“A devout life does bring wealth, but it’s the rich simplicity of being yourself before God. Since we entered the world penniless and will leave it penniless, if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet, that’s enough.” I Timothy 6, Msg

“But if it’s only money these leaders are after, they’ll self-destruct in no time. Lust of money brings trouble and nothing but trouble. Going down that path, some lose their footing in the faith completely and live to regret it bitterly ever after.”
1 Timothy 6, Msg

Dear Heavenly Father, These words are powerful, convicting and precious to our spiritual health as leaders serving others who seek you and want to grow up in you. Help us, Lord to avoid this epidemic that seems to be prevalent in your church at times. Heal Your church, Lord, heal Your church. Begin with me. Help me to be myself, my honest self before You.
I want what You want, for You have put Your desires in my heart. Help us to keep it simple…with complete focus on You. In Jesus Name, Amen.

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #6: ENCOURAGE AND COMPENSATE!

I don’t know why this is so hard, but a simple, appreciative thank you coupled with sweet, sincere words like, “You’re doing a good work at our church”, “I see Jesus in you when you…”, “I can tell you do this for all the right reasons”, “Your message and your life makes a difference in my life”, mean more to a hard-working, focused volunteer and paid ministry leader than any dollar amount you can think of…like honey on toast…it soothes and refreshes our souls.

Believe me. I been there. I’m still there, just not on the front lines as much. Months go by and God holds you up, but words of appreciation, “with no strings attached”, just make me work harder and ask God for more for those I serve. It also helps leaders to know if what they are doing is helpful to you, for that is their bottom line mission to help others know God more…so that others will know God more from their life walk.

“Great sermon”, pastor is almost offensive as it does not portray what it meant to you. How was it “great” for you? Many hours of preparation goes into one sermon presentation that seeks to save the lost, heal the sick and transform lives through teaching God’s Word. So, Paul’s advice to Timothy to treat leaders well and encourage them with compensation that fits the work is welcomed!

1 Timothy 5, Msg:
“Give a bonus to leaders who do a good job, especially the ones who work hard at preaching and teaching. Scripture tells us, ‘Don’t muzzle a working ox,’ and ‘A worker deserves his pay.'” (Meaning ministers like to eat, too!)

Other encouraging and pertinent information that helps leaders…

“Don’t listen to a complaint against a leader that isn’t backed up by two or three responsible witnesses.”

“If anyone falls into sin, call that person on the carpet. Those who are inclined that way will know right off they can’t get by with it.”

“God and Jesus and angles all back me up in these instructions. Carry them out without favoritism, without taking sides.”

“Don’t appoint people to church leadership positions too hastily.” If a person is involved in some serious sins, you don’t want to become an unwitting accomplice.”

“In any event, keep a close check on yourself. And don’t worry too much about what the critics will say.”

How did Paul know? He WAS a critic before he was a believer. He was a leader that persecuted the church. He was persecuting Jesus over and over, with his hateful actions until the Master, Jesus Christ stopped him dead in his tracks and blinded him to everything else but Jesus…Our LORD! He was transformed from the ugliness of being judge, jury and persecutor to a man with a mission…to help others know Jesus. “I want to know Christ”…and “share in his suffering” became his new battle cry. (Phil 3:10) Paul also became an encourager, as well as a mentor to Timothy and Titus in the work of encouraging other leaders. WE can join in that work of encouragement that is so needed today.

Dear Heavenly Father, Give us words that are sweet, helpful and encouraging to our leaders today. Use US to refresh their souls. Then give us opportunity to say it well with Your kind of sincere love. May Your Holy Spirit continue to work through them all, volunteer and paid, and build them up for the hard, tedious work, that saves souls and transforms lives for Your Glory. Thank you, Lord! In Jesus Name, Amen

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #5: LEAD ALL AGES

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #5: LEAD ALL AGES.

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #5: LEAD ALL AGES

There are many phases of a person’s life, therefore our teaching should adjust to the audience at hand. Our preaching is for all ages, but in the smaller setting we should not ignore any particular age group. We do not know exactly where they are with Christ. We must listen respectfully so we can be open to the Spirit’s wisdom with each phase of life.

I must tell a story of the 80 year old lady who began attending a church my husband pastored. She always had a smile on her face. She helped out at the food bank if someone gave her a ride. She loved coming to church. We assumed, by what we saw on the outside, that she was a Christian.

One day, she came up to Randy and I after the service and asked, what does it take to become what you said in your sermon? How do I ask Jesus into my heart, because I don’t think I have ever done that? At first, we were surprised, but Randy took her to his office and led this lovely 80 year old to Christ. She immediately wanted to be baptized. She was the very next Sunday saying, “I don’t have much time to fiddle around with this!” Lesson learned. Don’t assume.

We also have to be extra patience with our older members of God’s family who do profess to be Christians but can’t seem to find their purpose as older members. They do seem to get a little cranky at leaders and find fault with what the “young” are doing but I think it’s because they have lost their own sense of worth since turning over the reins to someone else.

Remember Newton’s law? A body in motion stays in motion, but a body at rest stays at rest. I might be silly, but I think a body at rest seems to think of more critical things to say because they no longer are in motion. Something or someone put them at rest. We need to put that mind back in motion in a positive way.

Paul gives this advice to Timothy…

“Don’t be harsh or impatient with an older man. Talk to him as you would your own father, and to the younger men as your brothers. Reverently honor an older woman as you would your mother, and the younger women as sisters.”
1Timothy 5, Msg

Don’t criticize older people as a way to get back at them, instead think about their phase of life, be patient and minister in ways that help them realize their place and purpose in God’s family. Put them back in motion! You will have less critical people if you love and cherish everyone. We all have a tendency to look over the heads of the older to reach young families for God and that is important, too. But realize that the heads that are being looked over, could be “grandparent” mentors to those families without extended family nearby. What a blessing that could be!

Dear Heavenly Father, We have all gone through times of overlooking and assuming. Forgive us. Help us to see all ages as You see them. Give us discerning, patient hearts and minds with wisdom to know what to be, say or do that pleases You and is helpful to others. In Jesus Name, Amen

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #4: TEACH WITH YOUR LIFE!

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #4: TEACH WITH YOUR LIFE!.

TIMOTHY AND TITUS Leadership Principle #4: TEACH WITH YOUR LIFE!

Know God. Know yourself. Know God’s Message of Truth. Then LIVE IT! Out loud. Boldly and Ashamedly. Exercise daily in the Word, so that Truth is built up in you. And, KEEP AT IT! No matter what!

“Stay clear of silly stories that get dressed up as religion. Exercise daily in God–no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can count on this. Take it to heart. This is why we’ve thrown ourselves into this venture so totally. We’re banking on the living God, Savior of all men and women.” I Timothy 4, Msg

As leaders, proclaimers of God’s Word, servants who pass on Truth, we can only live what we have learned ourselves. We can help people only as far as we have helped ourselves to God’s Word. The more we know, the more we can help others. Our behavior MUST reflect and line up with what we say we believe!

“Get the word out. Teach all these things. And don’t let anyone put you down because you’re young. Teach believers with you life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity. Stay at your post reading Scripture, giving counsel, teaching. And that special gift of ministry you were given when the leaders of the church laid hands on you and prayed–keep that dusted off and in use.” 1 Timothy 4, Msg

“Cultivate these things. Immerse yourself in them. The people will all see you mature right before their eyes! Keep a firm grasp on both your character and your teaching. Don’t be diverted. Just keep at it. Both you and those who hear you will experience salvation.” 1 Timothy 4, Msg

Dear Heavenly Father, Your Word is a tearful, joyful reminder of our work here, to boldly proclaim YOU and salvation for us through Jesus Christ so we can be with you, forever…bottom line! Help us live it honestly so others may see You in us. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus Name, Amen
