PITFALLS AND PROMISES…

Distractions, temptations, traps set by the evil one, gossip of others about us, or the mere suggestion of “you, don’t really believe all the Bible has to say, do you?” are life’s challenges. You know the tone of voice. I’m sure you have heard it. “You take the Word…at it’s word?” The Psalmist heard it often, it seems, because his prayers always come back to the promises of what the Word says to us, does for us and that it is Truth, no matter if we believe it or not. The Word stands firm and forever. No one else does that. What an encouragement to us!

PITFALLS…
“The arrogant dig pitfalls for me, contrary to your law. All your commands are trustworthy; help me, for men persecute me without cause. They almost wiped me from the earth, but I have not forsaken your precepts. Preserve my life according to your love, and I will obey the statutes of your mouth.”

PROMISES…
“Your Word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you.”

“If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life. Save me, for I am yours’ I have sought out your precepts.”

“The wicked are waiting to destroy me, but I will ponder your statutes. To all perfection I see a limit; but your commands are boundless.”

Psalm 119:85-96, NIV

My prayer, in Jesus Name, Amen!

HOW LONG MUST I WAIT?

HOW LONG MUST I WAIT?.

HOW LONG MUST I WAIT?

The Psalmist is having another bad day as we read the next few passages. His prayer today is about the wait.

“I faint with longing for your salvation; but I have put my hope in your word. My eyes are straining to see your promises come true. When will you comfort me? I am shriveled like a wine skin in the smoke, exhausted with waiting. But I cling to your principles and obey them. How long must I wait?…”
Psalm 119:81-84a, NLT

So, how are we in the “wait”? Sometimes I am as bad as the whining words of the Psalmist’s prayer. Have you ever told a child, “just a minute”? To a child a “minute” is an eternity, to which he cries, “HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT?”. Children do not understand the concept of time, or refuse to understand because in their immaturity, they are only thinking of themselves and what they think they need RIGHT NOW. As an example, when my daughter was very young, she yelled out, “I’m NOT at maximum comfort”. What?? She had read “maximum comfort” on the dashboard of our car’s A/C unit.

Seriously, we parents have to admit, that sometimes we use “just a minute” to put them off until they forget what they asked for at the time. It can be a long enough period of time (just a few minutes) and the child actually walks away to another distraction and forgets what he asked in the first place! But WE are not like that, are we?

I wonder if God uses “just a minute” until we ask the right questions before he answers and fulfills our real needs? Maybe our hearts need to be in the right place, our minds in the right way of thinking, our souls seeking salvation for ourselves. Maybe the wait is part of the process of maturity.

How long must I wait? When God knows we are able to handle His best for us and when our hearts line up with his, overlaid on His heart, then it is still up to God’s timing.

What is our prayer in “the wait”?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Lord, as we wait, teach us to wait. Show us who to be in the wait. Direct our actions in the wait. Don’t let us remain stagnant in the wait as a smelly pool left unattended but allow fresh waters of your Holy Spirit to flow through us, cleansing us…in the wait. May we realize Your Presence in the wait even when we don’t “feel” it. May we grow closer to You and others in the wait. Most of all, teach us to EMBRACE the wait as a blessing not a curse.

By your Grace, wisdom, insight and understanding, help us continually look up with a steadfast gaze into your all knowing, compassionate eyes, looking to You first each morning. In looking up, may our eyes literally lock in on Your face, watching for the nod to move forward or the look in Your eyes that tells us to just be still…and wait.

As players look for cues from their coaches, as students look for direction, glancing up at the look in their teachers’ eyes, may we, as Your servants, look to our King of Glory for the signal to obey quickly on your command for Your purpose, according to Your plan, for Your Glory! We know that the closer we get to You, the closer we come to love each other. And, you love it when we love each other! Let us help each other, then to wait in grateful expectation with renewed hope and energy.

In Jesus Name, Amen

“Pray diligently. Stay alert, with your eyes wide open in gratitude.” Col 4:2 Msg

LEAVE IT TO GOD!

It happens. No matter what you do in this world, you will be challenged by someone with a desire to criticize the work you are doing and bring you down, personally, in the process. The Psalmist prayer seems harsh, until we are in his shoes and have experienced “disgrace by arrogant people” ourselves.

It affects your heart, mind, body and soul. His prayer expresses what he is going through but then asks for relief from it, to be reconciled, and then leaves it to God. His prayer is honest. His prayer is helping him stay focused on God and His Word. The battle of focus is worth fighting, for Jesus went through the same for us. He won with his enduring silence through disgrace that led him to the cross. For us.

“Bring disgrace upon the arrogant people who lied about me; meanwhile, I will concentrate on your commandments. Let me be reconciled with all who fear you and now your decrees. May I be blameless in keeping your principles; then I will never have to be ashamed.” Psalm 119:78-80, NLT

DISGRACE: Without grace.

If you are going through this right now, my prayers are with you. This is one of the most gut-wrenching, soul-searching, mind distracting, heart breaking times on our journey through this life. But the Rock is higher than all of us. Cling to the Rock that is higher than us and ask for help in “higher ground” thinking and behaving. Cling to Christ. Stay forgiven and stay focused on His Word and your Walk with Him. HE is not without grace.

Dear Heavenly Father,
This is tough stuff for us but You know that. You suffered disgrace, being lied about, and then you were crucified. Why would I go to anyone else but you? You are all I need. You are life. We praise You for bringing us through the good and the bad. We praise You for the lessons learned in those challenging moments. Help us stay focused on You, eyes on You, hearts and souls with You. Always.
In Jesus Name, Amen

BECAUSE I SAID SO!

BECAUSE I SAID SO!.

BECAUSE I SAID SO!

This is a phrase that my mom (and probably her mom) said that I vowed never to say to my children. What can I say? NEVER say never. In frustration, after three children, it came out…boldly and with much feeling. I didn’t have time to explain why in that particular situation so I fell back on “because I said so, I am the parent”. Not too long ago, I heard it come from the mouth of my daughter as she disciplined her children. Never say never.

As we grow up with God, our Heavenly Father, I see a more positive lesson in “because I said so”. Maybe it’s not as wrong to say it as we first thought. There are times when just simple obedience is required without explanation of why. It is best for us and God knows that. He sees the big picture. HE does not have to explain Himself…but he does with unfailing love and care. He sent His Son to die for us. Isn’t that enough? It is more than enough for me!

Jesus, loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so.

This morning, God’s “because I said so” is more than enough for me. How about you? Forget the why and just obey. Because He said so.

Dear Heavenly Father,

“I know, O LORD, that your decisions are fair; you disciplined me because I needed it. Now let your unfailing love comfort me, just as you promised me, your servant. Surround me with your tender mercies so I may live, for your law is my delight.”
Psalm 119:75-77, NLT

HOPE AND JOY!

HOPE!

YOU ARE GOD…and I am not!

What a great, encouraging passage for this Monday morning. What a great way to begin a busy week! Read expectantly!

“You made me; you created me. Now give me the sense to follow your commands. May all who fear you find in me a cause for joy, for I have put my hope in your word.”
Psalm 119:73-74, NLT

Read this again…think about it. Then rejoice!

Image

Dear Heavenly Father, As we begin another work week, may your joy in us overflow and spill out on others. May they see You in us. Our hope is in You and what You tell us through Your Word. May we have the good sense to behave like we say we believe, for we know others who are seeking hope and joy, watch us in all circumstances to see how we will respond. Yes, you are God and we are not. Apart from you, we are not much. With You our joy is complete and eternal. Help us.
In Jesus Name, Amen

EUREKA! STRIKE IT RICH!

The “Forty-niners” gave up everything to go to California to dig for the precious gold that would change their lives forever…or so they thought. Many went hungry. Those who found the gold were so excited that they scream it from the hills, causing the robbers to come, kill and take it all away. Those who were quiet about it, were soon “found out” and they had to keep watch day and night for fear their treasure would be taken away. When they died, did their precious gold go with them?

What is your treasure? What is it that you seek most? Where is your “gold”? What is it that you would put your life in jeopardy, no matter what people said about you? What is your focus? I think about all this as I read the Psalmist next prayer as he talks with God…

“You are good, and the source of good; train me in your goodness. The godless spread lies about me, but I focus my attention on what you are saying; They’re bland as a bucket of land, while I dance to the tune of your revelation. My troubles turned out all for the best–they forced me to learn from your textbook. Truth from your mouth means more to me than striking it rich in a gold mine.” Psalm 119:68-72, Msg

A better question…WHO is your treasure…your gold?

And Jesus said, “Don’t hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or–worse!–stolen by burglars. Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.” Matthew 6:21, Msg

WHERE is your “fortune” found?

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for teaching and convicting us to always evaluate what we are “storing up” and where we are focused. Our desire is You. I want to dance to the tune of Your revelation! You are the gold we seek. Your word is worth more than millions in gold and silver and is more precious to me each day as I read and try to follow what you say. Thank you!
In Jesus Name, Amen!
