BURN OUT – ROMANS 12, LIVING IT

“Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master; cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder.” Romans 12, Message

Don’t burn out? How do we do that? How DO we keep on going when we would like to quit? And what causes us to quit?

WORRY seem to be a major culprit for us. In the midst of working full steam on a project, right in the middle of it all, a roadblock appears. We try to get over it, around it and through it, but it stops us. For a little while. We worry over it, waiting on a solution to be worked out. Did worry help us solve it? No, it just made us weaker. When we stop the worry, thinking about why it went wrong and move our thinking toward what could make this better, a solution is found. Worry is waste of our precious time. Pray instead, says God. And pray “expectantly”.

PHYSICAL STRENGTH is another cause of burn out. Unless we keep ourselves healthy with eating right things at the right time for our bodies, we become weak. When we are physically weak, our minds and hearts grow weak. A cloud of depression tends to form that actually causes us to move even less. If we sit more than we move, we become weak. There is truth to the commercial that says “a body at rest, stays at rest, but a body in motion, stays in motion.” I say this to my dad quite a bit, but it is a good reminder for all of us. To keep ourselves fueled and aflame is eating right, exercising and powering through those weaknesses that will come along.

FROWNING adds to our demise. Did you know it requires more muscles to frown than to smile? I have discovered that I must smile so my face doesn’t fall down! Even forcing a smile when you don’t feel like it, makes you feel less stressed for some reason. So smile, it is an INSTANT face lift that costs absolutely nothing. Start small then work yourselves up to a huge belly laugh! I begin each day with a humor just to get my mind working in a more positive motion. Because waking up is hard to do! (Sung to the tune “Breaking up is hard to do”…see, made you smile!)

ATTITUDE is a huge player in all of life. A positive, realistic attitude can get us through those times when it IS hard and we want to quit. How does this work? “Pray all the harder” says God’s Word. Prayer is more than a plea, a crying out, or a mere request to God. Prayer is God’s way of causing us to “say it all” out loud, so we hear what we are saying, think about it, and realize there are things we need to change in us.

Yes, “prayer changes things” and it is mostly us. “Praying harder” involves listening intently to what we are asking then falling to our knees to listen to what our Master, Our Father, God has to say to us. When we finally get to the end of ourselves, God speaks. Can I get an amen? I can testify to that!

DULLNESS. We become dull in doing the mundane and forget sometimes WHY we do it at all. Our prayers become weak and repetitive. Our passion dulls to only a flicker of a flame. Evil storms into dull minds and hearts and attacks when we least expect it. “Be alert servants of the Master” says God’s Word to us. Stay focused on God, look full into his face, ready to go when He says go! Dull minds don’t expect anything new. Be “cheerfully expectant”. Waking up each day asking, “What’s next, Abba Father”? combats dullness.

NO PLAN!  MAKE A PLAN…THEN DO IT! I recently read “Eat That Frog!” and realized how much organizing a plan for each day to reach ultimate yearly goals set by ourselves after passionate prayer to the God who helps us succeed, rejuvenates our thoughts, our actions, keeps us fired up, expectant, happier and daily motivated! (The author is Brian Tracy. Check it out!) Procrastination is a killer and fire snuffer!

REJECTION. We don’t like to talk about it. It hurts too much. It is probably the greatest challenge to keeping our fires blazing. We read Paul’s letter to the Philippians and hear his battle cry, I WANT TO KNOW CHRIST! In our hearts, we shout, YES, I DO, TOO! But the rest of that verse says, “…and share in His sufferings. Uh oh, we don’t want that! Jesus Christ went to His own “and his own received him not”. That is always in the back of my mind when rejected. Still rejection is hard, turns our flames down, and is almost debilitating to us.

But know this dear friends, from one who fights rejection to keep her flame going strong, we can overcome rejection by applying huge doses of God’s love to our wounded hearts DAILY and by allowing Him to renew our minds until the rejected thinks like the accepted.

Jesus Christ will never leave us or forsake us. He is incapable of suddenly deciding He no longer wants us. If we have received God’s Son as our Savior, nothing we can do will cause Him to reject us. Believe what God’s Word tells us about Him and about us. We are defined by the love and acceptance of the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. He happens to think we are worth loving AND keeping.

We must find and focus our identity in Him. Our identity is not in a job, ministry or even in our family as mothers, fathers, daughters and sons, our identities are in Christ. As rejected persons we must turn entirely to God and His Word. We will find glorious restoration and acceptance in Christ no matter what happens. Remember, our names are engraved on the palm of His hands! (Isa. 49:16)

KEEP A SMILE ON YOUR FACE!

KEEP A SMILE ON YOUR FACE!
From Romans 12, The Message – Living it!

As we gather for worship in awhile today, this seems so fitting to prepare our hearts, minds and souls with this passage. It gives us the “how to” after the sermon is over, to truly LIVE IT out loud!

“If you preach, just preach God’s Message, nothing else;
if you help, just help don’t’ take over,
if you teach, stick to your teaching;
if you give encouraging guidance, be careful that you don’t get bossy;
if you’re put in charge, don’t manipulate;
if you’re called to give aid to people in distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond;
if you work with the disadvantaged, don’t let yourself get irritated wit with or depressed by them.
KEEP A SMILE ON YOUR FACE.” (Emphasis mine!)

Consider this…
Image

Keeping a smile on your face while doing all that God asks and sees you through is put there by accepting the wonderful Grace, Mercy and Unconditional Love from our Heavenly Father, himself to us.

So, is what he is telling us to be and do too much to ask? No, I don’t think so.

So…”therefore” enter worship with a smile on your face. Leave worship with the same smile. Make ’em wonder what you’ve got or what you are up to…it will make ’em ask! Then tell the sweet, sweet story of Jesus and what He has done and still doing for you. Ah, simply Jesus.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We have a reason to smile! It’s not forced when we think of all that you have done and continue to do. You LOVE us, no matter what. You accept us for who we are right now. And You give us part of Your work to extend Your joy to us. Made complete. We love You, back, Lord. And I’m smiling…
In Jesus Name, Amen

COPYCAT!

“Stop copying me!” yelled one my first graders as I was teaching a new concept to the class. When we don’t know what to do, don’t understand the situation, or don’t know how to solve our problems, the EASIEST thing to do is copy someone else who seems to have the answer. But God says no, that’s not the right way.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God…” Romans 12:2, NLT

From the Message, “Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12, Msg

Also…”Fix your attention on God.” FOCUS on God. We live in an imperfect world with imperfect people. Do we copy imperfect people? NO…and I don’t want people copying me, either!! Copy God, the teachings of Jesus, led by HIS Holy Spirit. For Heaven’s Sake, don’t copy me and my friends. Do what God wants!
Image
Let God tell you what to do, where to go, what His will and perfect plan for you really is and how to do it. Reading His Word, praying for wisdom, insight and understanding is a beginning.

“Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.” Romans 12, Msg (Read this a few times and let it soak in.)

Father, You are God. i am not.

“…let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is.” The rest of the story in Romans 12:2

Dear Heavenly Father, What a promise! Your Word, our walk by You changing the way we think, Your will is pleasing and perfect when led by You! Our desire is to live this “good and pleasing life living in your perfect will for us”. You promised that when we seek you with a sincere, honest, repentant heart, you will come and stay with us. Thank you, Lord. Come.
In Jesus Name, Amen

Growing Up is So Hard to Do!

ROMANS 12 – STILL LIVING IT!

“Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12, Message

We cannot LIVE IT on our own. It is God that brings out the best in us. It is God Who must LIVE IN us for us to live the life, the “best” of God working through us, bringing the best of what HE he has created in us to be.

What IS maturity and what does it look like? We keep telling kids to “grow up” and “act your age”. (I’m still told that, occasionally!) Here is some clarification of maturity and how it’s expressed. Maybe this will help us better understand how to LIVE IT out in our lives, showing others “how to”, as well, by our own lives. You know it when…

Our concern for others outweighs our concern for ourselves.

The presence of evil or danger is detected before it is obvious.

We have more than high ideals; we have discipline to carry them out.

Emotions are tempered by responsibility and thoroughness.

Awareness of needs are matched by compassion and involvement.

There is not only an understanding of a task, but also the fortitude to stay at it until it is done.

There is a willingness to change.

There is the ability to grow spiritually. Continually.

And then,

Maturity is the ability to do a job whether or not you are supervised, finish a job once it’s started, and carry money without spending it.

And last, but not least, it’s the ability to bear an injustice without wanting to get even.

Dear Heavenly Father, We find there is way more to being mature in our faith and living it out in this life than we first think. You want us to go deeper still. My desire is to be and do all that it takes…without even thinking about it. By the Power of Your Holy Spirit living in us, help us. In Jesus Name, Amen

THE GREAT SHEEP LEAP!

No one has ever claimed that sheep were the smartest animals on earth. A few years ago, in a village in Turkey, they lived up to their not-so-bright reputation. One sheep wandered away from the flock to the edge of a nearby cliff, and he decided it would be great fun to jump off.

Of course, it was the last thing he ever did. Suddenly, all the sheep decided to play “follow the leader” and 1,500 sheep leaped off that same cliff to the rocks below, creating the world’s largest sweater at the bottom of the valley below. (Picturing this cracks me up, still.)

Actually, it was no joking matter. The town lost more than $100,000 in the great sheep leap that day.

It’s not an accident that over and over the Bible compares we humans to sheep. Why? Because we tend to follow where the crowd is going, just like sheep, no matter what that may cost us. Let’s face it. There’s actually peer pressure at every age and stage in our lives, isn’t there?

We are going to continue camping out in Romans 12 so we can better LIVE IT…now, from the Message:

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you; Take your everyday, ordinary life–your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around-life and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.”

“Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.” Romans 12, The Message

Where do you want to be? At the bottom of the cliff or….

Dear Heavenly Father, By Your Power flowing through us, help us to BE different to be A Difference in this world so that others will know you, too. We are Yours, Lord and Savior. We are Yours.
In Jesus Name, Amen

ROMANS 12 – LIVING IT! Continued…

“Dear Friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God. For it is written, ‘I will take vengeance; I will repay those who deserve it,’ says the Lord. Romans 12:19, NLT

But why? We ask the Lord as three year old’s sometimes…Because of the word “deserve”. Only God knows everything about all of us. He knows what every person is going through and where they have been. He is the only one who can justify and give to those what they deserve with their best interest at heart.

And when we try to avenge we lose our peace, which is not good for us!…according to Snoopy…ImageThere IS an alternative!

“Instead, do what the Scriptures say:
If your enemies are hungry, feed them.
It they are thirsty, give them something to drink, and they will be ashamed of what they have done to you.

Don’t let evil get the best of you, but conquer evil by doing good.”
Romans 12:20-21, NLT

Dear Heavenly Father, we come to the end of Romans 12 with how we began. Let go and let YOU take over our minds, hearts and souls and then behave accordingly. By Your Power, of Your Holy Spirit, Christ in us, help us LIVE IT. In Jesus Name, Amen.

PEACE

ROMANS 12 – LIVING IT
Continued…

“Do your part to live in peace with everyone, as much as possible.”
Romans 12:18, NLT

Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Keeping the peace, encouraging peace, loving peace, making peace involves relating to all kinds of people, with all kinds of personalities, with minds full of optional thinking and acting in one world. Ah, yes, it’s harder than it sounds in one simple sentence.

That’s why I cry out, like David, the Psalmist, for “wisdom, insight and understanding” every day. Living in peace with everyone requires unique skills that are developed and honed as we follow the prophet, Micah’s advice, “to love justice, mercy and walk humbly with God”. This is all part of living in peace.

Jesus says, “my peace I leave you, not as the world gives…” (John 14) His gift of peace must fill our own mind and heart. With our own minds and hearts at peace with God, while living it out, will help us to be more at peace with others, and more skillful to “do our part” in keeping the peace.

Jesus also preached, “God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.”

So, we are to do everything possible, with God’s help, to defuse a rift, argument or situation on the playgrounds of life, NOT escalate it. We should make peace where possible. Don’t hit back. Make peace.

Dear Heavenly Father, This is important to You because You are telling us in many ways that ultimate peace will come from You. We want to do our part by not hitting back, but loving You and others like You love…unconditionally. You promised wisdom for this when we ask. We are asking. Help us in this important life skill…making peace.
In Jesus Name and by His Power living in us, Amen.

ROMANS 12 – LIVING IT, Continued…

“Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable.” Romans 12:17, NLT

We have heard it said, by the world, “stand up for yourself, hit back and hard, so they won’t bother you again!” Or “take what is yours and more”, “you deserve it for what you do”.

But Jesus says, “don’t resist an evil person! If you are slapped on the right cheek, turn the other, too.”

We just went over this a few days ago, now it is mentioned a second time in this Romans 12 passage. So, it must be important…and difficult for us. Why, yes, it is! Our first, inborn, human reactions are to fight or flight, to hit back or back off and run! It depends on the situation, but I think most of us want to fight back. However, Jesus says, no. Turn the other cheek, give them what they want.

Above all, seek Jesus and His Kingdom. Will all be well? Maybe not immediately. But we will have peace in our restraint. And God will take care of the avenger…as we pray for them! (Romans 12:14)

This is higher ground thinking and acting. This is Jesus in us, making peace, so that others may know HIM. This Higher Ground thinking and acting is also called integrity. Have the integrity to do what is right, even in the worse circumstances, giving, not taking, even when nobody else does, and even when no one is looking.

“NEVER pay back evil for evil”. What good is that? What does that really prove to “pay back” anyway? That only escalates the problem. Do we want to be like the evil doer? Or like Jesus? I choose Christ.

This is what we need to think about when the urge to get even comes to the forefront of our mind. Go higher. Think more like Jesus, so we will act more like Jesus. THINK! Before we speak or act.

Dear Heavenly Father, You have given this lesson to us twice in one week, so this must be important for us and a hard lesson to act upon. By Your Power, help us to higher ground thinking and acting for without you we fail. In Jesus Name, Amen

HIGHER GROUND

ROMANS 12 – LIVING IT

We have been “camping out” in Romans 12 for quite a few days because we have declared this our chapter of the year. It begins with who we should be in Christ then delivers what we should do and how to live the life most pleasing to our Lord and Savior. It demands “higher ground” thinking and acting, making us more gracious with every step.

The teaching here is concise and understandable. We know exactly what we should be and how to do it. There is no question. Let the scripture teach us, one bite at a time,

“When others are happy, be happy with them. If they are sad, share their sorrow.” Romans 12:15, NLT

Dear Heavenly Father, Help us to do exactly what You are telling us to do…be happy when good comes to our friends. Remove all jealousy that robs our joy. Help us to be genuinely happy for others. Then when sorrow comes, help us to aid their comfort by simply standing by them. They do not need words, only Your touch through us. Help us to be “Jesus with skin on” to others today and always. (“Not thinking too highly of ourselves”) May all we do bring YOU glory.
In Jesus Name, Amen

OH, THE TONGUE…

An education for the congregation…PRAY FOR YOUR PASTORS!
Happy Friday! As most, not all, wind our work week down, our pastors are just gearing up to deliver and proclaim God’s Word that THEY have been working on all week with heart, mind and soul…

FOURTEEN THINGS YOU SHOULDN’T SAY TO YOUR PASTOR

The list is meant to be both humorous and serious. And I bet almost every pastor has heard all of these in the course of a ministry. Enjoy. But do not repeat (at least to your pastor).

1. I wish I had a job like yours, where I would work only one day a week.

2. What do you do with all the free time you have?

3. Can I have a couple of minutes before you preach?

4. I love you pastor, but _______________________________ (fill in the blank).

5. I like your preaching, pastor, but I really like ____________________________ (fill in the blank with television or podcast preacher).

6. Can your wife play piano?

7. Your kids shouldn’t behave that way. After all, they are pastor’s kids.

8. Your low salary is good for you. It keeps you humble and dependent on the Lord.

9. I bet you don’t spend any time preparing your sermons.

10. Pastor ________________ (predecessor pastor) didn’t do it that way.

11. You don’t have a real degree. You went to seminary.

12. How much longer do you think you’ll be at our church?

13. Did I wake you up pastor? It’s only 1:00 am.

14. Did you hear what they are saying about you?

BTW, we have heard them all…out loud. It happens. Don’t be that one!

“Live in harmony with each other. Don’t try to act important, but enjoy the company of ordinary people. AND don’t think you know it all!” Romans 12:16, NLT
