The grass is always greener…over the septic tank. Literally. We had a big yard to play in growing up in Oklahoma. In the summer when the hot sun hit the earth, all the grass became dry, dusty and yellow…except for one area. This large area was a lush, soft, and very green. As kids were attracted to it until our folks told us WHY it is so green. There was a resounding, collective, “EWW” from all of us to discover that the big nasty underneath the surface made it so green!

Abram and Lot, with all their family, animals and stuff have become too crowded. Abram, in his wisdom, tells Lot, his nephew that the time has come to separate. Abram gives Lot blessing of choosing which direction to move and settle. Lot chooses the greener, more fertile land to the east. Abram stayed in the land of Canaan. Lot moves to Sodom. “The people of this area were unusually wicked and sinned greatly against the LORD.” Genesis 13:13, NLT

Beware of where the grass appears to be greener! Lot, who thought he was choosing the best land for himself, leaving his uncle Abram in the dust behind, soon finds out that the underlying wickedness of his new location has the ability to overtake him.

God’s Story uses this episode in the life of Abram to show us the character of Himself in Abram. Abram gives Lot a choice. God gives us choice. Abram latter has to rescue Lot because of his choice. God comes to our rescue because of our choices. We are redeemed when we realize that our choices might not be God’s best for us and repent and seek His will rather than our own. Because God has the ability to work all things good for those who are called to fulfill His purpose, he helps us focus and get back on track, where the grass might not be as green, but His place is where we need to be. Mm, something to think about…

Dear Heavenly Father, We just want to stop and thank you for bringing us through all the times in our lives when we jumped to greener grass but found it had a stench underneath the surface. You redeemed us, moved us, and brought us closer to You, while teaching us more wisdom in the journey. Thank you for salvation, protection and provision all along the way. You are the God of Abram. You are the God for us now. You have not moved! You do not change. We do. In Jesus Name, Amen
