Luke and the Lost

Remember singing “Zacchaeus was a wee, little man and a wee little man was he. He climbed up in a sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see. Then as the Savior passed that way, He looked up in the tree. And he said, Zacchaeus, you come down for I’m going to your house today!”

Jesus’ mission on earth, on the way to the inevitable cross to die for our sins, was to seek and save and restore lost people. This is what He did for Zacchaeus, a stingy little tax man, who had the reputation of being a crook who stole from others to make himself rich.

He is drawn to see Jesus. Jesus sees him. Salvation by invitation occurs. Transformation instantly takes hold of the wee, little man and maybe he grew a little taller that day by his acts of giving back what he took from others because of what Jesus gave to him…salvation. Rich and free salvation.

Luke 19, The Message
19 1-4 Then Jesus entered and walked through Jericho. There was a man there, his name Zacchaeus, the head tax man and quite rich. He wanted desperately to see Jesus, but the crowd was in his way—he was a short man and couldn’t see over the crowd. So he ran on ahead and climbed up in a sycamore tree so he could see Jesus when he came by.

5-7 When Jesus got to the tree, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down. Today is my day to be a guest in your home.” Zacchaeus scrambled out of the tree, hardly believing his good luck, delighted to take Jesus home with him. Everyone who saw the incident was indignant and grumped, “What business does he have getting cozy with this crook?”

8 Zacchaeus just stood there, a little stunned. He stammered apologetically, “Master, I give away half my income to the poor—and if I’m caught cheating, I pay four times the damages.”

9-10 Jesus said, “Today is salvation day in this home! Here he is: Zacchaeus, son of Abraham! For the Son of Man came to find and restore the lost.”

Jesus is maligned through the gossip. “What business does he have getting cozy with this crook?” Jesus doesn’t care for His focus is relentlessly on finding and restoring lost people. The perfect Son of Man has compassion on the imperfect. His heart connects with the heart of a seeker. He looks up and their eyes lock as Jesus tells Zach that he is coming to be in his home, no matter what others say. “Today is salvation day in this home!”

Jesus invites

Sometimes we are the wee, little person in Spirit until we allow the transformation of Jesus to take hold. Then we grow deeper and wider, (and maybe stand a little taller) in our faith, hope and trust in the One who blesses us with forgiveness, the salvation from all our sins, to be remembered no more. Praise God, Hallelujah, Amen! I believe!
