Taking a hike through Hebrews

The world has fallen in love with angels and talk of angels leading sometimes to worship of angels. Be careful. Angels are not to be worshiped. The letter to the Hebrews spends much time explaining the role of angels. We must take a hard look at these words and pay attention so our thought life is Biblical as opposed to worldview. Be careful Who we worship and adore and depend on…only THE SON.

Hebrews 1, The Message
The Son Is Higher than Angels

3-6 After he finished the sacrifice for sins, the Son took his honored place high in the heavens right alongside God, far higher than any angel in rank and rule. Did God ever say to an angel, “You’re my Son; today I celebrate you” or “I’m his Father, he’s my Son”? When he presents his honored Son to the world, he says, “All angels must worship him.”

7 Regarding angels he says,

The messengers are winds,
the servants are tongues of fire.
8-9 But he says to the Son,

You’re God, and on the throne for good;
your rule makes everything right.
You love it when things are right;
you hate it when things are wrong.
That is why God, your God,
poured fragrant oil on your head,
Marking you out as king,
far above your dear companions.
10-12 And again to the Son,

You, Master, started it all, laid earth’s foundations,
then crafted the stars in the sky.
Earth and sky will wear out, but not you;
they become threadbare like an old coat;
You’ll fold them up like a worn-out cloak,
and lay them away on the shelf.
But you’ll stay the same, year after year;
you’ll never fade, you’ll never wear out.
13 And did he ever say anything like this to an angel?

Sit alongside me here on my throne
Until I make your enemies a stool for your feet.
14 Isn’t it obvious that all angels are sent to help out with those lined up to receive salvation?

What do we learn?
–There are many different depictions of angels in the world today. We are fascinated by the idea of heavenly beings and it’s not hard to find jewelry, art, or even garden decorations with tiny baby cherub or elegant beings. Many of us would be surprised to see what the Bible has to say about angels! These Bible verses about angels will give you a true picture of these heavenly beings. See also: Genesis 2:1; Col 1:6, Luke 20:35-36; Revelation 4:8; Matthew 22:30; Luke 15:10; Revelation 14:6;Job 4:15-18; Isaiah 14:12-14; Jude 1:6; 1 Peter 3:21-22; Hebrews 12:22; Revelation 5:11-12 Psalm 78:49; Psalm 91:11; Psalm 103:20; Matthew 4:6-11; Matthew 16:27; Matthew 18:10; Matthew 24:31-35, Luke 4:10; Colossians 2:18; Hebrews 1:14; Hebrews 2:6-13…and the list goes on….

–And at the present time, the angels are greater than we are, because God made us “a little lower than the heavenly beings” (Psalm 8:5). But the Bible also says that in heaven we will be higher than the angels — and the reason is because we will be like Christ.
