“The devil is in the details”. Have you ever heard this phrase? The idiom the devil is in the details means that mistakes are usually made in the small details of a project. Usually it is a caution to pay attention to avoid failure. There is even a song about “The Devil in the Details”. This saying was actually derived from “God is in the details.” Yep, I looked it up. So, WHO are we working for?
There is another phrase we often hear, too. “Want something done? Ask a busy person” because they will do it. They are all about the busy-work. They love it and thrive on every detail. The devil loves busy people, too. They (we) are easy prey. The devil can easily pull busy people’s attention away from the “why we do it” to merely staying busy. Busy people have a certain weakness. The busier we are the more we think we have value. We think the busier we are, the more important we are. We even talk about how busy we are-excessively. This is a falsehood that the devil would like for us to believe. Guess what? Talking about how busy we are is not what people want to hear, especially those who are wanting help to find Jesus from us. They just want us…not our tale of our overextended agendas.
Authentic faith breeds a desire to do God’s work. Mere busyness does not breed more faith. Jesus tells John about the church people of Sardis…busy, energetic with “vigor and zest” but dead. Wow…listen, really listen…
Revelation 3, The Message
Write this to Sardis, to the Angel of the church. The One holding the Seven Spirits of God in one hand, a firm grip on the Seven Stars with the other, speaks:
“I see right through your work. You have a reputation for vigor and zest, but you’re dead, stone-dead.
2-3 “Up on your feet! Take a deep breath! Maybe there’s life in you yet. But I wouldn’t know it by looking at your busywork; nothing of God’s work has been completed. Your condition is desperate. Think of the gift you once had in your hands, the Message you heard with your ears—grasp it again and turn back to God.
“If you pull the covers back over your head and sleep on, oblivious to God, I’ll return when you least expect it, break into your life like a thief in the night.
4 “You still have a few followers of Jesus in Sardis who haven’t ruined themselves wallowing in the muck of the world’s ways. They’ll walk with me on parade! They’ve proved their worth!
5 “Conquerors will march in the victory parade, their names indelible in the Book of Life. I’ll lead them up and present them by name to my Father and his Angels.
6 “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches.”
What do we learn?
–The devil is indeed in the details, to mess us up, throw off our rhythm AND keeps us busy!
–We must focus on Jesus, look to Him for guidance for every detail. God “delights in the details”. That’s the Truth of God’s Word! Let HIM work out all the details. We just obey and follow.
–Conquerors of busyness will march in victory with Jesus leading the parade! That’s where our worth lies…in Jesus, from Jesus…not from busyness…forever!
Dear Heavenly Father, Our true worth comes from You! We want to be in that number…when the saints go marching in! We do not have to direct the parade or work out all the details of organizing that parade. Let’s keep to the rhythm and march in step with You today and always. In Jesus Name, Amen
