Psalms of Honesty and Truth
There is a popular song, by Ryan Stevenson, that blesses me on my way to work. “In the Eye of the Storm” seems to parallel David’s song that we read today:
In the eye of the storm, You remain in control
And in the middle of the war, You guard my soul
You alone are the anchor, when my sails are torn
Your love surrounds me in the eye of the storm
When the solid ground is falling out from underneath my feet
Between the black skies, and my red eyes, I can barely see
When I realize I’ve been sold out by my friends and my family
I can feel the rain reminding me
In the eye of the storm, You remain in control
In the middle of the war, You guard my soul
You alone are the anchor, when my sails are torn
Your love surrounds me in the eye of the storm
Psalm 31 is longer than most. David runs to God this time, crying out for deliverance from the mockery and fake religion. “I hate all this silly religion, but you, Yahweh, I trust.” David knows God well, seeks God often and totally expects God to come. He expects God to love him, care for him and stay close to him. He reminds us all to have courage, pray expectantly, and don’t give up. Ever. “Expect Yahweh to get here soon.” Be blessed my friends!
Psalm 31, The Message (Read it all…this is only a portion.)
19-22 What a stack of blessing you have piled up
for those who worship you,
Ready and waiting for all who run to you
to escape an unkind world.
You hide them safely away
from the opposition.
As you slam the door on those oily, mocking faces,
you silence the poisonous gossip.
Blessed God!
His love is the wonder of the world.
Trapped by a siege, I panicked.
“Out of sight, out of mind,” I said.
But you heard me say it,
you heard and listened.
23 Love God, all you saints;
God takes care of all who stay close to him,
But he pays back in full
those arrogant enough to go it alone.
24 Be brave. Be strong. Don’t give up.
Expect God to get here soon.
What do we learn?
1. When Others Do Evil, Trust God for His Strength (vv. 1-8).
2. When Others Cause Pain, Ask God for His Mercy (vv. 9-18).
3. When Others See the Victory, Give God the Glory (vv. 19-24).
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for your words of encouragement and hope. Thank you for the bravery and strength you give us to be gracious when others are unkind and mean. Continue to help us seek You in the eye of our own personal storms. We expect You to deliver us. You always have. You always will. And you teach us all along the way. Thank you, Lord.
In Jesus Name, Amen
