Psalms of Honesty and Praise

“I don’t want to stay up late anymore, I’m so tired. I’m getting to old for to go out and party and then work the next day!” This was the lament of a twenty year old! What?!

It seems we are always whining about something in this world and growing older is at the top of the list. We listen to advertisers who compel us to stay young with their products. We slather on oils and creams to rid ourselves of the marks of living life in a temporary body. We color our hair (I do) so we don’t look as tired as we feel. We wear clothes to make us look younger and most of us end up looking more foolish because the clothes don’t fit our ever changing bodies. Yes, body parts are moving south with gravity and no matter what we do, we can seem to get the “lift” we once had. (Okay, now I’m laughing at us…with all of us.) This includes men and women.

So, as I read our next Psalm today, it is not surprising that a single sentence leaps off the page and into my weird thinking and makes my heart glad but it also pulls back into the reality of what God thinks of us. He loves us. Always has. Always will. Our worth and value comes from knowing how much He loves us and loving Him back with all that is in us. Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is in me! Bless His Holy Name! “He renews our youth–we are always young in his presence.”

Do you want to look and feel younger? Come before His presence with thanksgiving. Praise the One who created us. Be lifted up to higher thinking, God’s thinking, that puts a new glow on our face that no man-made cream could ever do. Worry makes us old and wrinkled. Trusting fully in God puts us on firm footing, not losing our balance because His Hand is holding our hand. Yes, in God Presence, we look young to Him.

“Bless Yahweh, don’t forget a single blessing!” and smile…best face lift ever!

Psalm 103, The Message
A David Psalm

1-2 O my soul, bless God.
From head to toe, I’ll bless his holy name!
O my soul, bless God,
don’t forget a single blessing!

3-5 He forgives your sins—every one.
He heals your diseases—every one.
He redeems you from hell—saves your life!
He crowns you with love and mercy—a paradise crown.
He wraps you in goodness—beauty eternal.
He renews your youth—you’re always young in his presence.

6-18 God makes everything come out right;
he puts victims back on their feet.
He showed Moses how he went about his work,
opened up his plans to all Israel.
God is sheer mercy and grace;
not easily angered, he’s rich in love.
He doesn’t endlessly nag and scold,
nor hold grudges forever.
He doesn’t treat us as our sins deserve,
nor pay us back in full for our wrongs.
As high as heaven is over the earth,
so strong is his love to those who fear him.
And as far as sunrise is from sunset,
he has separated us from our sins.
As parents feel for their children,
God feels for those who fear him.
He knows us inside and out,
keeps in mind that we’re made of mud.
Men and women don’t live very long;
like wildflowers they spring up and blossom,
But a storm snuffs them out just as quickly,
leaving nothing to show they were here.
God’s love, though, is ever and always,
eternally present to all who fear him,
Making everything right for them and their children
as they follow his Covenant ways
and remember to do whatever he said.

19-22 God has set his throne in heaven;
he rules over us all. He’s the King!
So bless God, you angels,
ready and able to fly at his bidding,
quick to hear and do what he says.
Bless God, all you armies of angels,
alert to respond to whatever he wills.
Bless God, all creatures, wherever you are—
everything and everyone made by God.
And you, O my soul, bless God!

Remembering who God is and what God has done trumps any and all current troubling circumstances in the present. Know God. Know His love. Love God. Love Others like we know He loves us.
In Jesus Name, Amen
