Malachi 4

I encountered a haughty middle school student yesterday in our after school program who is very proud of what he thinks he knows which, to him, is more than all of the rest of us in the room. You probably know a person like this in your life, too. They are proud…and insecure…at the same time.

While showing students how to predict a great day to launch a high altitude balloon on a very specialized online site, I gave them the latitude and longitude coordinates to type in to speed up the process. He piped up arrogantly and said, “Why don’t you just google it?” Mm, why don’t you just follow directions, I’m trying to help you? was my thought. (Smiling.) You teachers can imagine this moment. The look on his face is one of disgust most times because, in his mind, we cannot keep up with his assumed intelligence. But, I will win him over. He has also encountered a determined teacher who cares about him.

God cares for us. As our Savior, Teacher, Guide and Holy Father, we knows us well. He created us. I wonder what He thinks when we get so proud we think we don’t need him? I wonder what He will do when we become so haughty that we think we don’t have to follow His directions for life? The prophet, Malachi, proclaims the day of the Lord will come and judge the prideful and evil people. He also reminds us what will happen to God’s people who remain close to Him, trusting and obedient to His best for us. Again, there are only two choices in this life. We must choose well.

Malachi 4, NCV
The Day of the Lord’s Judging
4 “There is a day coming that will burn like a hot furnace, and all the proud and evil people will be like straw. On that day they will be completely burned up so that not a root or branch will be left,” says the Lord All-Powerful. 2 “But for you who honor me, goodness will shine on you like the sun, with healing in its rays. You will jump around, like well-fed calves. 3 Then you will crush the wicked like ashes under your feet on the day I will do this,” says the Lord All-Powerful.

4 “Remember the teaching of Moses my servant, those laws and rules I gave to him on Mount Sinai for all the Israelites.

5 “But I will send you Elijah the prophet before that great and terrifying day of the Lord’s judging. 6 Elijah will help parents love their children and children love their parents. Otherwise, I will come and put a curse on the land.”

What do we learn?
Trust and obey for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Yes, I’m reminded of one of my Grandpa’s favorite hymns to lead in worship at every baptism…

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
(Source: John H. Sammis, 1887)

AND now we are ready to dive into the New Testament of God coming to earth in the form of a human to show His people what love, trust and obedience looks like through His eyes, then He will lay down His life for us.
