Matthew – Fulfilled
Why is it so easy to allow others to guide our lives? Because it is EASY. We become lazy in our walk with Jesus. Instead of taking time to BE with Him in His Word, studying, meditating and applying it to our lives, listening to the Holy Spirit specifically speak to us, seek wholeness through forgiveness and allow God to transform us…we fall back to our human default button and just allow others to form us with their opinions and what they think our lives should look like and how we should perform. Yikes! Wake up! We should not be following other humans! There is only one Life-Leader! We follow Jesus Christ, our LORD!
On the flip side, why do we think it is our Christian responsibility to lead others? Say yes to God and join HIM in HIS work WITH others. “Do you want to stand out?, says Jesus, “Then step down. Be a servant.”
Matthew 23, The Message
1-3 Now Jesus turned to address his disciples, along with the crowd that had gathered with them. “The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God’s Law. You won’t go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don’t live it. They don’t take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It’s all spit-and-polish veneer.
4-7 “Instead of giving you God’s Law as food and drink by which you can banquet on God, they package it in bundles of rules, loading you down like pack animals. They seem to take pleasure in watching you stagger under these loads, and wouldn’t think of lifting a finger to help. Their lives are perpetual fashion shows, embroidered prayer shawls one day and flowery prayers the next. They love to sit at the head table at church dinners, basking in the most prominent positions, preening in the radiance of public flattery, receiving honorary degrees, and getting called ‘Doctor’ and ‘Reverend.’
8-10 “Don’t let people do that to you, put you on a pedestal like that. You all have a single Teacher, and you are all classmates. Don’t set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of ‘Father’; you have only one Father, and he’s in heaven. And don’t let people maneuver you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ.
11-12 “Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant. If you puff yourself up, you’ll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you’re content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.
What do we learn?
–Are we called to be a leader OR a better classmate?
–Be a servant, not a leader.
–Don’t let people put you on a pedestal just because you stand up and serve them each Sunday with what God has given to you to say. Point them to Jesus. Teach them how to say yes to God.
–Jesus Christ is HEAD of the church. NO ONE else is.
–We have ONE single Teacher and we are all classmates.
–LISTEN to GOD speak over and in your life. Listening to God is not reserved just for Beth Moore, Charles Stanley, Andy Stanley, Billy Graham, and more! These people would be the first to tell you privately, “Don’t follow me, follow JESUS! These are humans. Jesus is King of kings and LORD of lords. HE is the One and Only Life-Leader.
–Want to stand out? Step down.
–Simply BE yourself. God loves you. He loves me. Be content in His love. He knows you better than you know yourself and still He loves you. He loves me.
Dear Heavenly Father,
THANK YOU, dear Jesus for speaking to our hearts this morning. We are so fallible. We are so gullible. We are so lazy. I repent of seeking advice from the “experts”, putting them in a precarious position when I need to simply listen and allow You to do your work in me. Help me to serve more and lead less. Help me to keep it simple and say yes only to You. In Jesus Name, Amen
