John, The Love of God
Many are sitting in airports right about now waiting to get a flight home to see family. Something draws them home. Some are already churning inside their gut about seeing some family members who make them feel less than or irritate them because they think or act differently. Some are loaded up in the minivan and on the road, going “over the river and through the woods” to gather for the big Thanksgiving feast. Some people are joking about a cousin, uncle, mom or dad’s actions and antics before they even get there. But something draws them home.
Jesus is getting ready to leave planet earth. As he does he gives his followers, the dedicated eleven, a new command which is similar to the original “Love God with all your heart, mind and soul and love your neighbor like yourself”, but with a newer, deeper, down in our hearts punch. “Love one another. IN THE SAME WAY I LOVED YOU, love one another.” This goes beyond dedication (from obedience and reference) to loving deeply, profoundly, risky, relentlessly, extravagantly and unconditionally! Whoa.
It is loving each other no matter who they are, their position in life, what they do to irritate you, what they have done, or what our own assumed thoughts of what they think of us are…we just love…like Jesus loves us.
Think about this Love as we gather to thank God for what He has done for us, is doing and will do. Thank God first for being Present among us who believe. Thank Jesus for dying for our sin so that we can live with Him forever someday. Thank God for the love He displayed in His Son for us. Thank God for what He continues to do in us. Yes, may the Glory of God and the supreme example of the love of Jesus be seen in our love for each other. Amen.
This amazing Love draws us to Jesus. This love draws us toward home to be with Jesus someday.
John 13, The Message
A New Command
31-32 When he had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is seen for who he is, and God seen for who he is in him. The moment God is seen in him, God’s glory will be on display. In glorifying him, he himself is glorified—glory all around!
33 “Children, I am with you for only a short time longer. You are going to look high and low for me. But just as I told the Jews, I’m telling you: ‘Where I go, you are not able to come.’
34-35 “Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other.”
36 Simon Peter asked, “Master, just where are you going?”
Jesus answered, “You can’t now follow me where I’m going. You will follow later.”
37 “Master,” said Peter, “why can’t I follow now? I’ll lay down my life for you!”
38 “Really? You’ll lay down your life for me? The truth is that before the rooster crows, you’ll deny me three times.”
Dear Heavenly Father,
Prepare our hearts, minds and souls as we gather with family and friends for the event called Thanksgiving. May our hearts love like You love. May our minds think higher thoughts by the power of Your Holy Spirit living in us. May our souls be refreshed because of the Love expressed! May others see You in us because of the Love we show to each other. No roosters crowing here. I believe.
In Jesus Name, Amen
