PRESENCE AND PROMISE

Psalms – Prayers of Honesty and Praise

Psalm 140 6When evil has a hay day all around us and fights break out when we least expect it, what do we do first? Who do we run to for help…first? So many times our independent selves try to fix it ourselves. But we soon learn that we cannot, that we are not in control and that we don’t have what it takes to solve the hate and violence that is going on around us in the imperfect world.

We cry out, “Lord God, have mercy!” Whether this comes in the beginning or right in the middle of troubles, it is appropriate and right to run to God as our psalmist did. God’s promises to always be with us are true and bring stability and assurance, confidence and hope to whatever we are going through. His Holy Presence is powerful when we recognize that He was there all the time. We just had to stop and acknowledge Him, praise Him and follow His lead. We discover that He was in control all along. What peace!

Psalm 140, The Message
A David Psalm

Psalm 140 plea for mercy1-5 God, get me out of here, away from this evil;
protect me from these vicious people.
All they do is think up new ways to be bad;
they spend their days plotting war games.
They practice the sharp rhetoric of hate and hurt,
speak venomous words that maim and kill.
God, keep me out of the clutch of these wicked ones,
protect me from these vicious people;
Stuffed with self-importance, they plot ways to trip me up,
determined to bring me down.
These crooks invent traps to catch me
and do their best to incriminate me.

6-8 I prayed, “God, you’re my God!
Listen, God! Mercy!
God, my Lord, Strong Savior,
protect me when the fighting breaks out!
Don’t let the wicked have their way, God,
don’t give them an inch!”

Psalm 140 139-11 These troublemakers all around me—
let them drown in their own verbal poison.
Let God pile hellfire on them,
let him bury them alive in crevasses!
These loudmouths—
don’t let them be taken seriously;
These savages—
let the Devil hunt them down!

12-13 I know that you, God, are on the side of victims,
that you care for the rights of the poor.
And I know that the righteous personally thank you,
that good people are secure in your presence.

FROM THE HEART…

As evil thinks up new ways to harm and destroy our intimate relationship with Jesus and others, remember God’s Promises and Presence. Here are but a few:

“The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.” (Another translation, NLT, says to just be calm.) Don’t you love it? Exodus 14:14

“He gives strength to the weary and power to the weak.”
Isaiah 40:29

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Psalm 140“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

O Father in Heaven,
Thank you for your promises and powerful presence in our lives. You are God and we are not. You are in control for you are sovereign. You go before us, behind us and beside us. Continue to draw near to us as we draw near to you. All my love and hope, trust and confidence is in You, Lord. You are God, above and in all who believe, trust and obey. What blessed assurance that is for us today and always.
In Jesus Name, Amen

And I’m singing…God of Angel Armies…Chris Tomlin

You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light

Whom shall I fear

You crush the enemy
Underneath my feet
You are my sword and shield
Though troubles linger still

Whom shall I fear

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

My strength is in your name
For you alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory
Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in your hands
I’m holding on to your promises

You are faithful
You are faithful

Nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in your hands
I’m holding on to your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful
You are faithful

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side…
