Psalms – Prayers of Honesty and Praise
We ran out of gas. It was our fault. We didn’t check the gauge before jumping into the car hastily after a call that Randy’s grandma was very ill and to come quickly. We did just that, without thinking about the fuel we would need for a trip out of town.
We were stuck on the interstate with vehicles of all sizes whizzing by. Back in the day, we all had CB radios. Randy got on and asked for help to a gas station. No response. Maybe if a woman’s voice asked, I said, we might get a quicker response. I prayed this would work. It did. A car pulled over, saw our need and put my husband in their car to go get gas. I stayed back with the kids and prayed they would bring him back…with the needed fuel.
Minutes, that seemed liked hours, later Randy was brought back with fuel. We thanked these rough looking guys who helped us out and we praised God all the way to the hospital to see his grandma. All was well.
This is only one moment of thousands where God came to our rescue in all sorts of ways using all sorts of people. Our God is an amazing, awesome God. He hears and answers our prayers in ways beyond our asking or imagining. He is God and we are not. He does what we cannot do for ourselves. He saves us, redeems us. He covered all our debts of sin by the work of Jesus, His Son. He protects and provides. Because of Jesus, He hears us when we speak to him. He even hears our hearts. Yes, what a mighty God we serve!
David feels the same and in our next psalm expresses the character of God excellently.
Psalm 144, The Message
A David Psalm
Psalm 144 rescuer144 1-2 Blessed be God, my mountain,
who trains me to fight fair and well.
He’s the bedrock on which I stand,
the castle in which I live,
my rescuing knight,
The high crag where I run for dear life,
while he lays my enemies low.
Psalm 144 33-4 I wonder why you care, God—
why do you bother with us at all?
All we are is a puff of air;
we’re like shadows in a campfire.
5-8 Step down out of heaven, God;
ignite volcanoes in the hearts of the mountains.
Hurl your lightnings in every direction;
shoot your arrows this way and that.
Reach all the way from sky to sea:
pull me out of the ocean of hate,
out of the grip of those barbarians
Who lie through their teeth,
who shake your hand
then knife you in the back.
psalm-144-a-new-song.jpg9-10 O God, let me sing a new song to you,
let me play it on a twelve-string guitar—
A song to the God who saved the king,
the God who rescued David, his servant.
11 Rescue me from the enemy sword,
release me from the grip of those barbarians
Who lie through their teeth,
who shake your hand
then knife you in the back.
Psalm 144 blessed12-14 Make our sons in their prime
like sturdy oak trees,
Our daughters as shapely and bright
as fields of wildflowers.
Fill our barns with great harvest,
fill our fields with huge flocks;
Protect us from invasion and exile—
eliminate the crime in our streets.
15 How blessed the people who have all this!
How blessed the people who have God for God!
Oh Heavenly Father, Our God,
How blessed we are indeed! We thank you and praise you this morning for all you have done in our past, are doing in our present and will do in our future with you. You are God and we are not. We humbly bow in honor of You. We lift our hands to you in praise. We love you with all that is in us! Blessed is Your very Name! Thank you for saving us and daily transforming us into all that you intended for us to be. Thank you for inviting us to your work.
In Jesus Name, Amen
In the background of the psalm is a song of praise is playing in my mind…
Psalm 144 RockI’m Overwhelmed
By Big Daddy Weave
I see the work of Your Hands
Galaxies spin in a Heavenly dance oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming
I hear the sound of Your Voice
All at once it’s a gentle and thundering noise oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming
I delight myself in You
Captivated by Your beauty
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
God, I run into Your arms
Unashamed because of mercy
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
I know the power of Your Cross
Forgiven and free forever You’ll be my God
And all that You’ve done is so overwhelming
I delight myself in You
In the Glory of Your Presence
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
And God I run into Your arms
Unashamed because of mercy
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
You are Beautiful, You are Beautiful
Oh God,
