WHAT IS WORTH ALL YOU HAVE?

Matthew – God’s Purposes

Matthew 13, NLT
Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

Matthew 13 hiding
44 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.

Matthew 13 value
45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. 46 When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!

My Grandma Kellerby gave me a ring for my birthday that meant a lot to her. Because it had meaning for her, it had meaning for me. The ring had three small, fiery opals. At a grand youth event, I lost one of the opals during a concert. After everyone left, we searched under the bleachers in the gymnasium where the event was held. We swept the whole gym floor then searched in the dirt and debris for this small opal that was lost. We never found it. I was so disappointed. I blamed myself for clapping too hard at the event. Maybe, when I washed my hands, I lost it. Who knows? All I knew was that it was lost.

This feeling of losing something of value is the opposite result of the story Jesus has for us this morning. When you find something of great value you will do anything and everything to get it and keep it! He is talking about the Kingdom of heaven” who is the Person of Jesus Christ living in us! Jesus is worth selling all you have because all you have was given to you by Him in the first place! Jesus is worth giving all your heart, mind, and soul to because He knows what is in your heart, mind and soul and wants His best for you. He is worth giving all our love to Him because He first loved us with all that is in Him.

Matthew 13 pearl
When you seek Jesus, “the pearl of great value”, He promises you will find Him. When you find Him, accept, believe and follow Him, you will discover that Jesus is all you will ever need. We cannot, no matter how hard we try, we CAN NOT out give God. It will never happen.

Later, Jesus drives the point home with, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” Answer? Absolutely nothing on earth.

By giving all we are and what we think we own to the One and Only who created us, who took our punishment by dying for our sin, paying all our debt of sin for eternity, guiding us daily by His Holy Spirit AND giving us His power to overcome this world, I would say Jesus is the pearl of great price we seek, wouldn’t you? This is “Kingdom come, Kingdom of Heaven”, Jesus Christ, who has come to live inside the hearts of those who believe and have given all to seek Him, find and follow Him.

Epilogue of the Lost Opal

Being a woman of great faith to me, I wanted to fix the ring Grandma Kellerby had given to me as a symbol of the legacy of faith she instilled in me. Because I finally had the money to do it, I recently took it out of safe keeping and found a master jeweler who I trusted to fix it after all these years. I gave him the broken pieces. It took him a year to find just the right stone but he did. He restored it to it’s original beauty. Mm….Jesus does that for us!

QUESTIONS FOR THOUGHT:

Does my heart, mind and soul need restoration from the things of this world that have distracted and broken me?

Is my faith in safe keeping, hidden away? Do I need to bring it out in the open to be used as the Master guides and invites?

Am I at a point in my life where it is easy to give up what is not mine in the first place or do I still hang on to stuff?

Do I still hang on to the past that God has already forgiven me and has forgotten as he promised? Am I allowing my brokenness to be healed?

Who is in control? Who has ALL my heart, mind and soul? WHO has all my broken pieces and longs to bring beauty from the ashes?

AND what will I profit or gain to make a mark in this world but miss out on a forever life with God who wants more for me than I can dream or imagine?

Have I found what I am seeking? Is the Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus, truly living in me for all to see in ways that draw them to Jesus?

Matthew 13 handsDear Heavenly Father,
You truly are the treasure that I seek, like the chorus I sing to you often. You are the One and Only God. You are my Savior and my Lord. Thank you for saving my soul and making me whole again. Thank you for inviting me to your work. Thank you for consistently transforming me to be all you intended for me to be. And you aren’t finished yet! Thank you for your love, mercy and grace.
In Jesus Name, Amen. I believe. I found the “pearl” of great price!

And I’m singing…
Resurrecting…Elevation Worship

The head that once was crowned with thorns
Is crowned with glory now
The Savior knelt to wash our feet
Now at His feet we bow

The One who wore our sin and shame
Now robed in majesty
The radiance of perfect love
Now shines for all to see

Your name, Your name
Is victory
All praise, will rise
To Christ, our king
Your name, Your name
Is victory
All praise, will rise
To Christ, our king

The fear that held us now gives way
To Him who is our peace
His final breath upon the cross
Is now alive in me

Your name, Your name
Is victory
All praise, will rise
To Christ, our king
Your name, Your name
Is victory
All praise, will rise
To Christ, our king

By Your spirit I will rise
From the ashes of defeat
The resurrected King, is resurrecting me
In Your name I come alive
To declare Your victory
The resurrected King, is resurrecting me
By Your spirit I will rise
From the ashes of defeat
The resurrected King, is resurrecting me
In Your name I come alive
To declare Your victory
The resurrected King, is resurrecting me

By Your spirit I will rise
From the ashes of defeat
The resurrected King, is resurrecting me
In Your name I come alive
To declare Your victory
The resurrected king, is resurrecting me
He’s resurrecting me
Our God is good, oh
The tomb where soldiers watched in vain
Was borrowed for three days
His body there would not remain
Our God has robbed the grave
Our God has robbed the grave

Your name, Your name
Is victory
All praise, will rise
To Christ our king
Your name, Your name
Is victory
All praise, will rise
To Christ our king! ….
