JESUS LEADS THEM…TO DANGER AND DESPAIR…WITH HOPE!

The Good News

Mark 10, The Message
32-34 Back on the road, they set out for Jerusalem. Jesus had a head start on them, and they were following, puzzled and not just a little afraid. He took the Twelve and began again to go over what to expect next. “Listen to me carefully. We’re on our way up to Jerusalem. When we get there, the Son of Man will be betrayed to the religious leaders and scholars. They will sentence him to death. Then they will hand him over to the Romans, who will mock and spit on him, give him the third degree, and kill him. After three days he will rise alive.”

After talking about personal sacrifice for eternal gain as what it takes to enter the Kingdom of God, Jesus leads His followers to Jerusalem for the final episode of His mission on earth. He explains to His closest followers what will happen, step by step, in clear, understandable words. He outlines exactly His will given to Him by His Father…our Father in Heaven. But they still cannot seem to grasp it. They are afraid…and amazed at the same time.

These followers knew they were headed to danger, but followed still…because Jesus was in the lead. They were full of fear…but Jesus was in the lead. Sometimes we wonder if they were really hearing what He was saying to them on the walk to Jerusalem. It seems Jesus goes over God’s Plan of suffering to save souls through His Son many times. Are they dull? Let’s not be too harsh. Doesn’t God have to tell us over and over what His plan really is for us? We are human. We do not like to hear of imminent suffering. We want to avoid suffering…at all costs! Ah, there it is…the cost.

“They were now going up from Jericho to Jerusalem, going up with Christ to his cross and his death. He went before them, eagerly leading the way for his timid disciples, who were now beginning to realize what was about to happen, and that he would be condemned and crucified. Therefore the evangelist adds, they were amazed (Greek, ἐθαμβοῦντο); the same word which is used at ver. 24. The words in the original, according to the best reading, make a distinction between the utter amazement of the disciples and the fear of the others who followed (οἱ δὲ ἀκολουθοῦντες ἐφοβοῦντο). St. Mark draws a distinction between the disciples, who would be following him, though at a little distance, and the mixed company, who were also following him, though at a greater distance. The whole scene is before us. Our blessed Lord, with an awful majesty on his countenance, and eager resolution in his manner, is pressing forwards to his cross.” –Pulpit Commentary

“Listen to me carefully,” says Jesus to us today. “We are on our way to…” This is for US to fill in the blank. Whatever God is calling you to be and do today…go with Him with Him in the lead. Yes, suffering is most always part of the package, but His glory is seen at the end. Yes, and Amen.

Dear Heavenly Father, Many, including myself, love to cry out, I want to You, but want to avoid suffering as part of the cost of living a life for You on earth. “I want to know Christ,” Paul says in Your Word, but adds “and share in your suffering”. We sometimes forget that last part and want only to know You. We repent. We know that to know You and to follow You, suffering is part of the whole of living with Your and abiding with You through thick and thin…and to be content. Thank you, Lord for Your Word. Go with us…leading the way today. Help us to be a resolute as You were on that day on Your road to Jerusalem…the road to the Cross that saved us. In Jesus Name, Amen

Philippians 3, NIV
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

And Amen.

GIVE UP THE CHECK LIST!

The Good News!

How many of you, like me, seem to operate on daily check lists? If we don’t, we feel we will not get anything accomplished. Our work demands checklists and back up checklists it seems. We are asked constantly, “did you get that done?” So, that becomes our lives in this world so we don’t fall short when the time comes for, yet another checklist..the work evaluation!

We carry this over into our family life and home management, don’t we? Admit, whether you write it down or not, we do it. To do lists and check lists seem to control us. It comes frightfully close to losing our souls if the checklist mentality carries over into our spiritual lives…which should be ALL of life. I not saying we shouldn’t be prepared, the Bible teaches us to be prepared and ready. But be ready when God changes us and our checklist.

Let’s read what Jesus says and how he looked right into the eyes of one who asked, “What must I do to get eternal life?” and see how He LOVED him with His response. Jesus nailed the man’s to do list to his heart and the man could not let go of it. Wow….see what you think…

Mark 10, The Message
To Enter God’s Kingdom
17 As he went out into the street, a man came running up, greeted him with great reverence, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to get eternal life?”

18-19 Jesus said, “Why are you calling me good? No one is good, only God. You know the commandments: Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t lie, don’t cheat, honor your father and mother.”

20 He said, “Teacher, I have—from my youth—kept them all!”

21 Jesus looked him hard in the eye—and loved him! He said, “There’s one thing left: Go sell whatever you own and give it to the poor. All your wealth will then be heavenly wealth. And come follow me.”

22 The man’s face clouded over. This was the last thing he expected to hear, and he walked off with a heavy heart. He was holding on tight to a lot of things, and not about to let go.

23-25 Looking at his disciples, Jesus said, “Do you have any idea how difficult it is for people who ‘have it all’ to enter God’s kingdom?” The disciples couldn’t believe what they were hearing, but Jesus kept on: “You can’t imagine how difficult. I’d say it’s easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for the rich to get into God’s kingdom.”

26 That set the disciples back on their heels. “Then who has any chance at all?” they asked.

27 Jesus was blunt: “No chance at all if you think you can pull it off by yourself. Every chance in the world if you let God do it.”

28 Peter tried another angle: “We left everything and followed you.”

29-31 Jesus said, “Mark my words, no one who sacrifices house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, land—whatever—because of me and the Message will lose out. They’ll get it all back, but multiplied many times in homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land—but also in troubles. And then the bonus of eternal life! This is once again the Great Reversal: Many who are first will end up last, and the last first.”

Jesus is looking at us, “hard in the eye”–and loving us! How many of us want to tear up our check list and let it go? I do, I do! Let it go (temptation here to sing, but I won’t)! Seriously, let it go and let God direct us, guide us, teach us with every step. Go with the unforced rhythm of His love, mercy and grace. BE with Him, see what that is like, before doing anything. Being in the Kingdom of God is allowing Him to pry our tight fists from those things that are keeping us from entering and abiding with God…forever and ever, Amen.

1907720_10154464966875010_5233257186021133546_n

Dear Heavenly Father, I give you my to do lists and my check lists of good and trade them for Your best. I give you my heart, mind and soul with love in my heart. I give you my life. All of it. I am letting go, again, this day. Thank you for this example of what we must do to BE with You forever.
Your loving, out of control child,
In Jesus Name, Amen

THE SIMPLICITY OF FAITH

The Good News!

I have a confession to make. Whoa, I bet that has your attention! Have you ever played the game “Would You Rather…”? It is an ice breaker game I have used many times in youth ministry situations as well as in schools where I have taught. The “game” asks students to step on one side of a line based on a question posed such as, Would you rather eat a snake or or a lizard? After brief thought, the students step on the side of the line that tells what they would prefer. Okay, here is my confession. If someone asked me, “Would you rather be in a room full of adults or be in a room full of kids” I would gingerly jump to the side of the kids…for many reasons.

So, this passage we come to this morning gives me overwhelming joy and makes me giggle a bit because of the way Jesus scolds his guys as they try to get the kids (brought by their parents!) from clamoring to the front of the “church” to get near Jesus while he is teaching.

Mark 10, The Message
13-16 The people brought children to Jesus, hoping he might touch them. The disciples shooed them off. But Jesus was irate and let them know it: “Don’t push these children away. Don’t ever get between them and me. These children are at the very center of life in the kingdom. Mark this: Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in.” Then, gathering the children up in his arms, he laid his hands of blessing on them.

“Don’t EVER get between them and me.” Pretty clear, isn’t it? Ministry to children is the lifeblood of a healthy church. Kids are simple and have complete faith in the One who created them. They are not as tarnished by worldly ways…yet. This is the kind of faith that Jesus wants from us. We can learn by watching, listening and understanding how a child thinks. We can be childlike in our faith and not be childish. There is a difference.

Simple, complete faith in God, trusting every move He makes concerning us, while taking us on adventures that grow us AND enjoying it with complete inner joy and peace is childlike faith. Fighting every move He makes in and through us and whining about every grow spurt God allows in our lives is childish faith. Ah…Childlike versus childish. Something to think about today, eh?

983682_315023095328719_902887066012813059_n

And Jesus took them in his arms and laid His hands of blessings on them. What a glorious image of thought! What this blessing? Follow children of simple faith right into the center of God’s kingdom thinking. BE childlike in faith and practice. Let us lay down our worldly childish ways.

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for Your Word that blesses us today and teaches us to be more childlike, not childish in our faith and trust in You…no matter what. We love You with all our heart, mind and soul. Thank you for encouraging us today. Go with us now and help us live what we have been taught. May we meditate on this Word all day long. In Jesus Name, Amen

LOVE GOES DEEPER THAN THE PAPERWORK!

The Good News!

My pastor husband came home one day after a premarital counseling session with a young couple and shared his disappointment in what occurred. In the middle of the discussion, the husband-to-be spoke up and declared, “Well, this is all well and good, but I figure if it doesn’t work out, we will just get out, get a divorce and move on.” My husband told them the truth, “If you go into this sacred unity with that attitude then it most likely will not work out.”

Our world has a flippant view of marriage. Apparently it’s been a flippant, hardhearted view since the days of Moses! Jesus explains to the Pharisees, who were trying, once again, to bait him, that God created two people to love each other far more than what the paperwork documents.

Mark 10, The Message

Divorce
10 1-2 From there he went to the area of Judea across the Jordan. A crowd of people, as was so often the case, went along, and he, as he so often did, taught them. Pharisees came up, intending to give him a hard time. They asked, “Is it legal for a man to divorce his wife?”

3 Jesus said, “What did Moses command?”

4 They answered, “Moses gave permission to fill out a certificate of dismissal and divorce her.”

WHAT GOD WANTS FOR US…
5-9 Jesus said, “Moses wrote this command only as a concession to your hardhearted ways. In the original creation, God made male and female to be together. Because of this, a man leaves father and mother, and in marriage he becomes one flesh with a woman—no longer two individuals, but forming a new unity. Because God created this organic union of the two sexes, no one should desecrate his art by cutting them apart.”

10-12 When they were back home, the disciples brought it up again. Jesus gave it to them straight: “A man who divorces his wife so he can marry someone else commits adultery against her. And a woman who divorces her husband so she can marry someone else commits adultery.”

As cells divide in our body and become completely new cells, a man and woman divide from the “cell” of their previous family and become a new cell union with each other. They are one flesh, forming a new unity. What’s love got to do with it? The “love at first sight” kind of love matures into actions of devotion to God and to each other. Together, you set new goals as a couple. As one flesh, you make decisions based on God’s direction. Your pure, unadulterated love puts the other person’s interests ahead of your own. An attitude of what can I do to make my spouse’s life easier is love beyond the paperwork.

Will disagreements come? You bet they will! But with pure love for each other at the foundation of this holy union, those disagreements can be solved. Disappointments, emotional upsets, financial problems, job loss, job gain, is all a part of the journey here. “Don’t find fault with each other” counsels Paul in his letters to believers. Instead, “Build each other up”. That is love in action and devotion…with God as our focus and foundation. We are human. We cannot do this alone. We need God and the power of His Holy Spirit to guide and direct us through the storms that will rise up on the horizons of marriage. He will calm the storm. We will grow through the process. That is love that goes deeper than the paperwork.

PMR forgive and grace

Dear Heavenly Father, After 44 years of marriage, we are still learning and growing in Your love and our love for each other. Do we understand what we are reading here? More than most know we do. We are not perfect, we are just forgiven and forgiving. We could have given up on each other but we chose not to, because our love goes deeper than the paperwork, too.

We do not know why divorce happens among believers so we lift up all marriages up to You now, dear Lord. We believe in your holy union still. We believe that no one or no situation should desecrate Your art of marriage by cutting two people apart. Lord, we grieve for those going through divorce, separation and a deep love lost. Encourage them and help them today. Bring blessings in more ways to their marriages that we can imagine!
In Jesus Name, Amen

GOD WILL ALSO NOTICE…

The Good News!

There is that one person in your life at work, home or church that just grinds on your nerves because of the attitude they have about you and life itself. This person puts you down when you succeed at any given task you were given to do. This person even throws up “roadblocks” of misinformation, withholding needed information or simply holds back when their help could make a difference in the “team” effort. They critizise every move you make.

This person is insecure and has a great need for power and control. That is at the heart of these circumstances. This is a tough one, isn’t it? We want to fight back, but that only escalates the situation. So, we work around, over and through these hindrances of life by giving these people extra grace where needed. Furthermore, what we learn from these people is, WE do NOT want to BE these people. Check out what Jesus says…

Mark 9, The Message

Where we left off yesterday…
39-41 Jesus wasn’t pleased. “Don’t stop him. No one can use my name to do something good and powerful, and in the next breath cut me down. If he’s not an enemy, he’s an ally. Why, anyone by just giving you a cup of water in my name is on our side. Count on it that God will notice.

And now today…God also notices….
42 “On the other hand, if you give one of these simple, childlike believers a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you’ll soon wish you hadn’t. You’d be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck.

43-48 “If your hand or your foot gets in God’s way, chop it off and throw it away. You’re better off maimed or lame and alive than the proud owner of two hands and two feet, godless in a furnace of eternal fire. And if your eye distracts you from God, pull it out and throw it away. You’re better off one-eyed and alive than exercising your twenty-twenty vision from inside the fire of hell.

49-50 “Everyone’s going through a refining fire sooner or later, but you’ll be well-preserved, protected from the eternal flames. Be preservatives yourselves. Preserve the peace.”

1607020_713823375317129_1695218342_n

Dear Heavenly Father, This lesson is personal. This lesson is clear. Preserve the peace. Help us to see power seeking people as you see them and not become one of them. Show us Your will and way to move among them and still accomplish the tasks before us. And, above all, keep us alert and don’t allow us to BE one of those who would hinder or get in the way of Your work in all of us. Refine us. In Jesus Name, Amen

GOD WILL NOTICE!

The Good News!

Mark 9, The Message
38 John spoke up, “Teacher, we saw a man using your name to expel demons and we stopped him because he wasn’t in our group.”

John tattles on a man who was calling on the name of Jesus to help someone else…because the man “wasn’t in our group”. Yikes, we church people do that sometimes, too! This scripture is convicting if you really think about it. We are such a jealous people, we lifetime church goers. If a church group down the street seems to be having success, then we think it must be evil, because our “group” isn’t having the same success in growth. Equally so, if a smaller in size and attendance church is reaching out in quiet ways, using every resource that God has given to them, we criticize that they are a “drain on the kingdom” simply because there are not hundreds in their “group”. We think God isn’t with them or their group would be larger in population. Mm.

“Jesus wasn’t pleased”. He still isn’t pleased when we think our group is more advanced than another group. He isn’t pleased with our comparisons, our rivalry, our jealousies and even the evil of our tearing each other down thinking that will lift us up…climbing on the backs of those who simply offer a cup of cold water to a struggling fellow sojourner in this brief life.

Don’t stop him! says Jesus. ANYONE who offers a cup of water in my name is on our side. Count on it. GOD WILL NOTICE!

So, if you are discouraged because someone has told you the work you are doing isn’t good enough, large enough, or praiseworthy to the world or to their “group”, know this. GOD IS NOTICING who you are and what you are doing and that is ALL that counts! Again, God will notice and that is all that counts.

1013804_688753794515318_3186947275900863172_n

Dear Heavenly Father, We need to take this small bit of Your Word to heart and live it out. Help us to consistently be encouragers to all who call on Your Name and do what You have given them to do. Help us to notice the good like You notice. Keep us alert to all opportunities to offer a cup of water to those who need it, in Your Name and for YOUR glory. Help us to speak of You and not of our acts of kindnesses.
In JESUS NAME, Amen.

EMBRACE LAST PLACE

The Good News

The kids are fighting and you, as the parent walk into the room and suddenly, knowing they are in trouble, there is silence. Their eyes are darting back and forth from each other and then back to you. It is the same with Jesus’ followers, his main guys. They are fighting about who is first. Jesus walks in and explains, once more, how his “upside down Kingdom” works, along with another lesson in servant leadership.

Mark 9, The Message

33 They came to Capernaum. When he was safe at home, he asked them, “What were you discussing on the road?”

34 The silence was deafening—they had been arguing with one another over who among them was greatest.

35 He sat down and summoned the Twelve. “So you want first place? Then take the last place. Be the servant of all.”

36-37 He put a child in the middle of the room. Then, cradling the little one in his arms, he said, “Whoever embraces one of these children as I do embraces me, and far more than me—God who sent me.”

Love God. Love others. Embrace and serve others and we are embracing God and His Son, our Deliverer.

LOVEJESUS

Dear Heavenly Father, In just a few words and a simple action you give us the meaning of life with you. Thank you. Help us to embrace others like we would a precious child. Help us embrace being last, as a servant, a little tighter today.
In Jesus Name, Amen

NO IFS!

The Good News

As a leader who is trying to bring all things together, the last person you want on your team is the person who doesn’t believe in the mission of the what you are trying to accomplish. This is any work place situation! This is the person who is consistently throwing a “wet blanket” over the fires of enthusiasm. This is the person we call the “what if-er” and the “Yeah, but..” person. Faith is leading the team ahead and then, at the last minute, as most yeah, but persons do, this negativity brings forth all the what ifs of why they doubt the project will happen.

Don’t get me wrong, a healthy what if person helps the team along the planning process to be prepared for anything that could happen but in positive ways that helps the team to have a back up plan or at least, be flexible for when we might not be leaning our ladder on the right wall…for we are human. When it comes to agreement on mission, focus and purpose, however, the “plan” is to focus fully on the Lord, God of Heaven and earth and go with the unforced rhythm of his mercy and grace with complete faith that God knows what He is doing. In this case, WE get out of the way and let God…this is being flexible and bendable to go with expectant faith in the One who can do ANYTHING! This is disturbing to what if people. What if people have a faith issue that needs to be addressed. Jesus addresses that for us today.

“Jesus said, IF? There are no ‘ifs’ among believers. Anything can happen. No sooner were the words out of his mouth than the father cried, ‘Then I believe. Help me with my doubts!'”

Here’s the rest of the lesson…
Mark 9, The Message
There Are No Ifs
14-16 When they came back down the mountain to the other disciples, they saw a huge crowd around them, and the religion scholars cross-examining them. As soon as the people in the crowd saw Jesus, admiring excitement stirred them. They ran and greeted him. He asked, “What’s going on? What’s all the commotion?”

17-18 A man out of the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought my mute son, made speechless by a demon, to you. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and goes stiff as a board. I told your disciples, hoping they could deliver him, but they couldn’t.”

19-20 Jesus said, “What a generation! No sense of God! How many times do I have to go over these things? How much longer do I have to put up with this? Bring the boy here.” They brought him. When the demon saw Jesus, it threw the boy into a seizure, causing him to writhe on the ground and foam at the mouth.

21-22 He asked the boy’s father, “How long has this been going on?”

“Ever since he was a little boy. Many times it pitches him into fire or the river to do away with him. If you can do anything, do it. Have a heart and help us!”

23 Jesus said, “If? There are no ‘ifs’ among believers. Anything can happen.”

24 No sooner were the words out of his mouth than the father cried, “Then I believe. Help me with my doubts!”

25-27 Seeing that the crowd was forming fast, Jesus gave the vile spirit its marching orders: “Dumb and deaf spirit, I command you—Out of him, and stay out!” Screaming, and with much thrashing about, it left. The boy was pale as a corpse, so people started saying, “He’s dead.” But Jesus, taking his hand, raised him. The boy stood up.

28 After arriving back home, his disciples cornered Jesus and asked, “Why couldn’t we throw the demon out?”

29 He answered, “There is no way to get rid of this kind of demon except by prayer.”

1907720_10154464966875010_5233257186021133546_n

PRAYER is at the beginning of it all. Prayer, asking for God’s marching orders for each day is vital to knowing the direction He wants us to take. Consistent communication with the Lord of lords and King of kings, keeps doubts down and gives a laser focus on God and what He wants us to do. Praying expectantly gives us the hope to keep moving forward, no matter what. Prayer is the calming agent in last minute details that can build the team. Without prayer is without Him! Missions are easily dismantled and sometimes destroyed because of doubts that God will do what He says He will do. With prayers of faith everything is possible as it aligns with God’s will.

Dear Heavenly Father, We believe. Help us with our doubts! Make Your desires for us be ours. It’s simple, really. I believe.
In Jesus Name, Amen

SEEING NOTHING BUT JESUS!

The Good News

Years ago, as part of my ministry tasks, I was assigned to be an event coordinator for a large gathering of people. It was a challenge too big for me. I went to the Lord daily to ask what He wanted to teach His people. I daily tried to follow what He led me to do, while He paved the way, put strategic people in front of me to help and put a plan together to make it happen. Our mission was to help people see, know, and come closer to Jesus and learn from Him through this gathering. The phrase the “devil is in the details” could not have been more true. Leaders, do you hear me? Do you relate?

We felt the event was accomplished exactly in ways God wanted…for His people to see Jesus, nothing but Jesus because of the reaction of the people. We allowed people to evaluate the event. Most were favorable, with statements of “I saw Jesus here” and other comments like this one. Then there was the evaluation by one woman who in three paragraphs with bold letters wrote hateful words that told us we were discriminating against those who drink tea but not offering tea bags and hot water at the break tables with the coffee and donuts. Wow. I sat and wept openly in the privacy of my office as I read it. I was not crying for me as I did not take this personally, I was crying for her. JESUS was here, and she missed Him. She was more concerned about building alters to tea and she missed Jesus and all that He did in the lives of the people gathered there that week. How do we miss Jesus?

It happens. An even greater prayer I had for everyone who came was that after seeing “nothing but Jesus” they would not leave Him there on that “mountain top experience” but would take Him home to be forever in their hearts, His words on their lips and His leading found in their behavior. Transformed people with Christ leading the way, HIS way was my prayer always.

I remember this as Jesus declared the glory of God to just a few of his followers on a mountain. God, in return, let them know Who Jesus was to Him. “This is my Son, marked by my love. Listen to Him.”

Mark 9, The Message
9 Then he drove it home by saying, “This isn’t pie in the sky by and by. Some of you who are standing here are going to see it happen, see the kingdom of God arrive in full force.”

In a Light-Radiant Cloud
2-4 Six days later, three of them did see it. Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. His clothes shimmered, glistening white, whiter than any bleach could make them. Elijah, along with Moses, came into view, in deep conversation with Jesus.

5-6 Peter interrupted, “Rabbi, this is a great moment! Let’s build three memorials—one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah.” He blurted this out without thinking, stunned as they all were by what they were seeing.

7 Just then a light-radiant cloud enveloped them, and from deep in the cloud, a voice: “This is my Son, marked by my love. Listen to him.”

8 The next minute the disciples were looking around, rubbing their eyes, seeing nothing but Jesus, only Jesus.

9-10 Coming down the mountain, Jesus swore them to secrecy. “Don’t tell a soul what you saw. After the Son of Man rises from the dead, you’re free to talk.” They puzzled over that, wondering what on earth “rising from the dead” meant.

11 Meanwhile they were asking, “Why do the religion scholars say that Elijah has to come first?”

12-13 Jesus replied, “Elijah does come first and get everything ready for the coming of the Son of Man. They treated this Elijah like dirt, much like they will treat the Son of Man, who will, according to Scripture, suffer terribly and be kicked around contemptibly.”

Question for us:
When you look around are we looking at nothing but Jesus?
Is He guiding your every thought and action in your family, employment, retirement, financial decisions, relationships, and all of life’s stuff?
God says to us still, as followers…This is my Son, listen to Him. Are we?

Dear Heavenly Father, Help us to avoid longing for mountain top experiences and live our lives expectantly waiting for You, listening to You, looking and focusing on You and what Your best is for us. All we have to do is ask, so we are asking now, what would You have us be and do today? We are listening.
In Jesus Name, Amen

HOW GOD WORKS!

The Good News

If there was any doubt in knowing how God works, Jesus, The Messiah, clears up any misunderstandings with his followers. We pick up where we left off yesterday with “what are YOU saving about me?” He now gives them an explanation of HIS mission of suffering, dying and rising again…for them, for us, and the rest of humanity. It gets personal. It IS personal. Who is in control? Are we? And how is that working for us? Let’s read how Jesus declares Who He is, Why He came and how God works…

Mark 8, The Message (Let it soak in all day today. I am.)
The Messiah
27 Jesus and his disciples headed out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. As they walked, he asked, “Who do the people say I am?”

28 “Some say ‘John the Baptizer,’” they said. “Others say ‘Elijah.’ Still others say ‘one of the prophets.’”

29 He then asked, “And you—what are you saying about me? Who am I?”

Peter gave the answer: “You are the Christ, the Messiah.”

30-32 Jesus warned them to keep it quiet, not to breathe a word of it to anyone. He then began explaining things to them: “It is necessary that the Son of Man proceed to an ordeal of suffering, be tried and found guilty by the elders, high priests, and religion scholars, be killed, and after three days rise up alive.” He said this simply and clearly so they couldn’t miss it.

32-33 But Peter grabbed him in protest. Turning and seeing his disciples wavering, wondering what to believe, Jesus confronted Peter. “Peter, get out of my way! Satan, get lost! You have no idea how God works.”

34-37 Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? What could you ever trade your soul for?

38 “If any of you are embarrassed over me and the way I’m leading you when you get around your fickle and unfocused friends, know that you’ll be an even greater embarrassment to the Son of Man when he arrives in all the splendor of God, his Father, with an army of the holy angels.”

Questions for self evaluation:
WHAT are we trading our very souls for?
WHO is in control? No, seriously, WHO IS in control of everything we are and do?
Do we EMBRACE suffering as part of our maturing process…or run from it, complain about it, and give up because of it?
What is our sacrifice for others quotient? Or do we look out for self first? Do we only sacrifice when it is comfortable and fits into our schedule?
When, where, what, how often do I communicate (talking to God and listening to Him talk with me) with God?
Am I fickle? How focused am I on my Savior and Lord?

Dear Heavenly Father, You sent Jesus, The Messiah with a very specific mission and we are grateful You did for we would not be able to come to You this morning in prayer and repentance had He not come. Thank You. Thank you for salvation because of sacrifice, mercy and grace. Go with us. Help us stay focused in the world that clamors for our attention. I give my life back to You. Take my life and shape me, then work through me as You see fit. You are God…and we are not. In Jesus Name, Amen
