WHAT ARE YOU SAYING ABOUT ME?

The Good News

What’s the word on the streets? What are they saying about me? Who do they say I am? These are questions that make up opinion polls across America. Opinions are personal commentary on what they feel only at the moment they are asked. Opinions change as quickly as the weather. So why does Jesus ask the same questions of his disciples as they walk to more villages to minister to those who need it most?

Mark 8, The Message

THE MESSIAH
27 Jesus and his disciples headed out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. As they walked, he asked, “Who do the people say I am?”

28 “Some say ‘John the Baptizer,’” they said. “Others say ‘Elijah.’ Still others say ‘one of the prophets.’”

29 He then asked, “And you—what are you saying about me? Who am I?”

These guys have left everything behind to follow The Messiah, and yet He asks a poignant question, on this day, of just walking along the road to “seek and to save” lost people, fulfilling the mission. I wonder why. I’ve always wondered why when I read this. Are we so dull that we have to be asked who Jesus really is…in the midst of ministry? Do our opinions change in the heat of ministry details? Does Jesus stop us when we are at the brink of discouragement of taking on too much by ourselves and ask, “Who am I”? Is the question for our own self examination so we will pause in the middle of it all and refocus on The Messiah and the mission He gave us?

“What are they saying about me?” This questions causes me to tremble because what “they” think and say about Jesus could have a lot to do with what I am saying about Jesus. It could have even more to do with how I am behaving in front of those seeking to find Jesus, the only One who can mend their broken hearts and save their souls.

“And you–what are you saying about Me?” –Jesus

Dear Heavenly Father, In just a few words, You have our undivided attention today. And we repent. We refocus on WHO you are and ask for boldness and clarity to declare that YOU are Messiah, the Savior of the world AND Lord of our lives. You give Life abundant! You bring Light to all the dark places of our souls. Only You can calm our storms and bring healing and refreshment on this brief journey here until You call us home to be where You are. You are peace. You are wisdom, insight and understanding. You are God and we are not. We pray this will be sent to all who need to answer the same question…”Who am I?” “What are you saying about me?”
In Jesus Name, Amen. I believe.

DO WE STILL NOT GET IT?

The Good News

Years ago a small task force of people were working on plans to present an outreach of learning to kids who needed it most. The program began shaping up to be a series of presentations that the grownups liked and looked impressive to the outside world, but in the heat of preparation one person asked, “But, will the kids benefit? If our bottom line is to teach in a way that kids learn best to encourage THEM to be lifelong learners then have we missed the point? It is so easy to miss the point. It’s like building a ladder to get over a wall, then find out we put it on the wrong wall.

Our simplistic thought life about spiritual teaching can go awry, too! We take many “rabbit trails” in worldly thought until we hear the Holy Spirit say, come back to Jesus. Come back to the point of HIS teaching. Jesus had to train his own disciples to “get it”, really “get it” many times. We are no different.

The Pharisees have confronted Jesus after the miracles of feeding thousands and healing of many to harass and badger The Master, Jesus Christ. WOW! Worldview versus Biblical view.

Mark 8
13-15 He then left them, got back in the boat, and headed for the other side. But the disciples forgot to pack a lunch. Except for a single loaf of bread, there wasn’t a crumb in the boat. Jesus warned, “Be very careful. Keep a sharp eye out for the contaminating yeast of Pharisees and the followers of Herod.”

16-19 Meanwhile, the disciples were finding fault with each other because they had forgotten to bring bread. Jesus overheard and said, “Why are you fussing because you forgot bread? Don’t you see the point of all this? Don’t you get it at all? Remember the five loaves I broke for the five thousand? How many baskets of leftovers did you pick up?”

They said, “Twelve.”

20 “And the seven loaves for the four thousand—how many bags full of leftovers did you get?”

“Seven.”

21 He said, “Do you still not get it?”

Poor disciples, they thought Jesus was talking about the physical things around them…what they could see with their eyes. Jesus was talking about being alert to the contamination this world can bring to their very souls. Jesus, The Bread of Life, wants us to be alert to worldview thinking that contaminates and instead be nourished with HIS way of thinking and behaving. Jesus transforms us from the inside out when we “get it” and are “all in”.

Do we get it?

Dear Heavenly Father, I give you my heart, mind and soul, all of it to be filled with all of You! Continue to guide us, keep us alert, with Your wisdom, insight and understanding flowing though us. Thank you for saving our souls by Your sacrifice. Be our discernment when challenged to choose between what the world thinks and what YOU think. Cleanse us this day of any contamination that is in us now. In Jesus Name, Amen

BLESS IT TO STRETCH IT!

The Good News!

When you have a family who invites unexpected guests to meals you know the “bless it to stretch it” prayer pretty well. My grandmother was notorious for making sure new people who came in to our church, old friends who just stopped by, or anyone who was hungry, even those coming down the road of their farm to ask for bread, were given a meal.

We don’t do that anymore, do we? I can’t imagine anyone close to me in these days inviting anyone in without a lot of preparation, making sure there is enough food and the house spotless. Mm, Jesus invited a few thousand to stay for a meal and somehow when he prayed the bless it to stretch it prayer…there were even leftovers. Maybe, just maybe we are missing the point of the invitation. It’s not about the meal, it’s about a relationship. Mm.

Mark 8, The Message
A Meal for Four Thousand
8 1-3 At about this same time he again found himself with a hungry crowd on his hands. He called his disciples together and said, “This crowd is breaking my heart. They have stuck with me for three days, and now they have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they’ll faint along the way—some of them have come a long distance.”

4 His disciples responded, “What do you expect us to do about it? Buy food out here in the desert?”

5 He asked, “How much bread do you have?”

“Seven loaves,” they said.

6-10 So Jesus told the crowd to sit down on the ground. After giving thanks, he took the seven bread loaves, broke them into pieces, and gave them to his disciples so they could hand them out to the crowd. They also had a few fish. He pronounced a blessing over the fish and told his disciples to hand them out as well. The crowd ate its fill. Seven sacks of leftovers were collected. There were well over four thousand at the meal. Then he sent them home. He himself went straight to the boat with his disciples and set out for Dalmanoutha.

Dear Heavenly Father, We have read this story of You many times and, once again, You give us a new, fresh perspective of the situation with more learning from the inside out of our hearts, minds and souls. Thank you. Go with us, help us focus on the most important…a relationship with You and with others that is built, not on food, but on unconditional love, mercy and grace. Help us to see others like You see them. In Jesus Name, Amen!

SPIT AND POLISH!

The Good News!

This is one of those mornings when I giggle a little bit because of my weird childhood flashbacks when I read scripture stories of how Jesus touched lives everywhere he went in some particular way…just for them. My mom never gave me the “once over” until we were in the car always rushing to church or to some other event where I needed to look my best, (for her mostly, because I didn’t care so much).

Once in the car, she would turn around just before we were to get out of the car. I knew the old spit and polish was coming. I couldn’t get out of the way fast enough. She would pull out a Kleenex, spit into it and wipe my face clean of any debris left from breakfast or snacks. Ew. As I got older and through a fit about this spit and polish procedure, she would say, “Okay, stick out your tongue (which I fell for) and she would swipe the napkin over MY tongue then wipe my face. Okay, that was better. What?! No, it wasn’t. (Smiling…I did it to my kids, too.)

mom cleaning face

Apparently it is a Biblical thing to do…

Mark 7, The Message

31-35 Then he left the region of Tyre, went through Sidon back to Galilee Lake and over to the district of the Ten Towns. Some people brought a man who could neither hear nor speak and asked Jesus to lay a healing hand on him. He took the man off by himself, put his fingers in the man’s ears and some spit on the man’s tongue. Then Jesus looked up in prayer, groaned mightily, and commanded, “Ephphatha!—Open up!” And it happened. The man’s hearing was clear and his speech plain—just like that.

36-37 Jesus urged them to keep it quiet, but they talked it up all the more, beside themselves with excitement. “He’s done it all and done it well. He gives hearing to the deaf, speech to the speechless.”

Jesus took the man away from the crowd to deliver healing in a way completely unique for this man. This was done, no doubt, to fix the attention of the afflicted man upon himself, and upon the fact that he was about to act upon his ears and his tongue. We also need to remember that when we read God’s Word, we need to understand that it is about God and His Power, not so much about us. Read from that point perspective and you will be blessed!

Interesting thought from Pulpit Commentary:
“And he put (ἔβαλε) – literally, cast or thrust – his fingers into his ears. The action was very significant. It was as though he said, “I am about to open a passage for hearing through these ears.” And he spat, and touched his tongue; that is, he touched his tongue with saliva from his own sacred lips. These symbolical actions must have had a great meaning for the afflicted man. They were an acted metaphor, teaching him what he might expect from the mercy of Christ. We may be assured that that these signs used by our Lord were intended to awaken the afflicted man’s faith, and to stir up in him the lively expectation of a blessing.”

What encouragement! Expect a blessing today. Allow Christ to OPEN our eyes to see and our ears to see and understand His great power that is happening all around us.

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you. I stand in awe of You. Just thank you. In Jesus Name, Amen!

Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Open my ears, that I may hear
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear.

BUT THEY FOUND HIM!

The Good News!

Jesus leaves the area where He has confronted the Pharisees Truth of the pollution of their hearts, to go to Tyre, a port city. For whatever reason to leave His familiar surroundings, He goes to a home where He didn’t think he would be found…but they found Him.

Mark 7, The Message
24-26 From there Jesus set out for the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house there where he didn’t think he would be found, but he couldn’t escape notice. He was barely inside when a woman who had a disturbed daughter heard where he was. She came and knelt at his feet, begging for help. The woman was Greek, Syro-Phoenician by birth. She asked him to cure her daughter.

27 He said, “Stand in line and take your turn. The children get fed first. If there’s any left over, the dogs get it.”

28 She said, “Of course, Master. But don’t dogs under the table get scraps dropped by the children?”

29-30 Jesus was impressed. “You’re right! On your way! Your daughter is no longer disturbed. The demonic affliction is gone.” She went home and found her daughter relaxed on the bed, the torment gone for good.

Jesus has now let it be known that His mission to seek and to save lost people includes ALL of us, Gentiles and Jews alike. All who come to HIM will be found in HIM. This is the GOOD NEWS for ALL of us who are seeking to be saved by Him. Did you get that? ALL who love God back, accept Jesus as their Savior and Lord will be saved.

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that NO ONE need be destroyed; by believing in him, ANYONE can have a whole and lasting life.” John 3:16, The Message

But they found Him…
Have you noticed Him? Has He entered your house? Have you found Him? Are you living as a “found” person? Do we realize Jesus came for all?

Dear Heavenly Father, Sometimes we need to look up and notice where You are working as well as Who You are to us. You are not just a part of our lives but You are Life itself. You are welcome in our homes and hearts. May You abide with us as we abide with you. We love you back. You are all we need. But we must remember You are for ALL of us, not just some of us. Help us to be alert to that fact! No matter who we are or where we come from, You died and rose for ALL of us. In Jesus Name, Amen

HEART POLLUTION

The Good News!

The United States and other first world countries are so concerned with pollution of all the packaging we put around our food and other non biodegradable products that we throw into the garbage that it has become a multi-billion dollar business. We spend millions of tax dollars on just advertising alone to tell us what to do with our garbage! They tell us we will all die if we do not put our pop bottles in the right container. Have we gone a little overboard? Is this what we should be focusing on all the time? And do we recycle because we are rule followers or because it’s the right thing to do? Mm.

Jesus, as always, gives us a better perspective about cleanliness and garbage.

Mark 7, The Message

The Source of Your Pollution
7 1-4 The Pharisees, along with some religion scholars who had come from Jerusalem, gathered around him. They noticed that some of his disciples weren’t being careful with ritual washings before meals. The Pharisees—Jews in general, in fact—would never eat a meal without going through the motions of a ritual hand-washing, with an especially vigorous scrubbing if they had just come from the market (to say nothing of the scourings they’d give jugs and pots and pans).

5 The Pharisees and religion scholars asked, “Why do your disciples flout the rules, showing up at meals without washing their hands?”

6-8 Jesus answered, “Isaiah was right about frauds like you, hit the bull’s-eye in fact:

These people make a big show of saying the right thing,
but their heart isn’t in it.
They act like they are worshiping me,
but they don’t mean it.
They just use me as a cover
for teaching whatever suits their fancy,
Ditching God’s command
and taking up the latest fads.”

9-13 He went on, “Well, good for you. You get rid of God’s command so you won’t be inconvenienced in following the religious fashions! Moses said, ‘Respect your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone denouncing father or mother should be killed.’ But you weasel out of that by saying that it’s perfectly acceptable to say to father or mother, ‘Gift! What I owed you I’ve given as a gift to God,’ thus relieving yourselves of obligation to father or mother. You scratch out God’s Word and scrawl a whim in its place. You do a lot of things like this.”

14-15 Jesus called the crowd together again and said, “Listen now, all of you—take this to heart. It’s not what you swallow that pollutes your life; it’s what you vomit—that’s the real pollution.”

17 When he was back home after being with the crowd, his disciples said, “We don’t get it. Put it in plain language.”

18-19 Jesus said, “Are you being willfully stupid? Don’t you see that what you swallow can’t contaminate you? It doesn’t enter your heart but your stomach, works its way through the intestines, and is finally flushed.” (That took care of dietary quibbling; Jesus was saying that all foods are fit to eat.)

20-23 He went on: “It’s what comes out of a person that pollutes: obscenities, lusts, thefts, murders, adulteries, greed, depravity, deceptive dealings, carousing, mean looks, slander, arrogance, foolishness—all these are vomit from the heart. There is the source of your pollution.”

The real source of pollution…verbal vomit. We do it every day. What else is coming from our hearts? Time to repent.

Dear Heavenly Father, Cleanse my heart, Wash me white as snow. Remove all the impurities, pollution, and offensive trash from my heart. Make me holy and clean before You this morning. Renew my spirit. Now send me back into the world to represent You in the most excellent way…with unconditional love in my heart. Love never fails. In Jesus Name, Amen. I believe.

AND WE’RE WALKING…

The Good News

National Treasure is a movie I enjoy, but I laugh at the scene where a tour guide of our nation’s capitol says to the people in her group, over and over, “And we’re walking, stay with me, and we’re walking…” I giggle a bit because I am remembering this scene as I read about Jesus walking past his followers struggling against the winds of the sea by just trying to keep their oars in the water! YES, Jesus, the Son of God in human form, walks past them, intending to just pass by, but of course He is noticed! And we’re walking…

Mark 6, The Message

47-49 Late at night, the boat was far out at sea; Jesus was still by himself on land. He could see his men struggling with the oars, the wind having come up against them. At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the sea. He intended to go right by them. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and screamed, scared out of their wits.

50-52 Jesus was quick to comfort them: “Courage! It’s me. Don’t be afraid.” As soon as he climbed into the boat, the wind died down. They were stunned, shaking their heads, wondering what was going on. They didn’t understand what he had done at the supper. None of this had yet penetrated their hearts.

53-56 They beached the boat at Gennesaret and tied up at the landing. As soon as they got out of the boat, word got around fast. People ran this way and that, bringing their sick on stretchers to where they heard he was. Wherever he went, village or town or country crossroads, they brought their sick to the marketplace and begged him to let them touch the edge of his coat—that’s all. And whoever touched him became well.

They still didn’t get it! Who IS this man? The followers are still wondering how in the world Jesus fed more than five thousand people gathered on the hillside with a pocket full of food! Then comes another struggle in life…a raging sea with the wind against them. Jesus WALKS by leisurely, watching them. They are scared, but HE says, take it easy, it’s ME. “Don’t be afraid.”

Do we get it? In the midst of our struggles, Jesus will walk by. We need to recognize Him for Who He is. Watch as He climbs into the boat with us. Feel His Presence in the middle of the storm and see how suddenly our storms die down. He will see us through whatever we are going through at present. This is encouraging to us this morning! THIS is Good News, too! Right?

And we’re walking…

1970374_10153922734395010_248434127_n

Dear Heavenly Father, We praise You for what You have done, are doing and will do in our lives as well as WHO You are. YOU are GOD and we are not. There is no one I would rather walk with than You! Continue to be with us this day as we walk the path You have given us. In Jesus Name, Amen

HEART BROKEN? GO MAKE SUPPER!

The Good News

Often I anxiously pray, knowing God will answer this prayer in exponential ways, “God, break my heart of those things that break Yours.” This meditative exercise in deep prayer immediately takes the focus from us and places our attention back on God, His will and His mission for all of us…to point the way for everyone we meet to Him. As we grow in our relationship with the Father, walk in His ways, others are drawn (not to us) but to Him, too. When we pray these words with a repentant, seeking, sincere heart, we see what breaks His heart with clarity and are filled with some of the same compassion He has to do what God asks us to do knowing He will make a way for us to do it.

I think of this as I read of His compassion for his helpers who have been working non stop…”come away Me, let’s take a break and get a little rest”…to an even greater compassion with looking back over the crowd as his heart breaks for them. They needed what He had. So on he taught…tirelessly.

Mark 6, The Message

Supper for Five Thousand
30-31 The apostles then rendezvoused with Jesus and reported on all that they had done and taught. Jesus said, “Come off by yourselves; let’s take a break and get a little rest.” For there was constant coming and going. They didn’t even have time to eat.

32-34 So they got in the boat and went off to a remote place by themselves. Someone saw them going and the word got around. From the surrounding towns people went out on foot, running, and got there ahead of them. When Jesus arrived, he saw this huge crowd. At the sight of them, his heart broke—like sheep with no shepherd they were. He went right to work teaching them.

35-36 When his disciples thought this had gone on long enough—it was now quite late in the day—they interrupted: “We are a long way out in the country, and it’s very late. Pronounce a benediction and send these folks off so they can get some supper.”

37 Jesus said, “You do it. Fix supper for them.”

They replied, “Are you serious? You want us to go spend a fortune on food for their supper?”

38 But he was quite serious. “How many loaves of bread do you have? Take an inventory.”

That didn’t take long. “Five,” they said, “plus two fish.”

39-44 Jesus got them all to sit down in groups of fifty or a hundred—they looked like a patchwork quilt of wildflowers spread out on the green grass! He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples, and the disciples in turn gave it to the people. He did the same with the fish. They all ate their fill. The disciples gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. More than five thousand were at the supper.

Walking on the Sea
45-46 As soon as the meal was finished, Jesus insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead across to Bethsaida while he dismissed the congregation. After sending them off, he climbed a mountain to pray.

SO…what do we do? Go and make “supper” for someone God allows us see who needs it, be blessed and THEN rest in prayer with the Father. After prayer, be ready for the next thing Abba Father has waiting for us!

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for Your Word that has such power, clarity, and teaching for all of us. Thank you for the “ah-ah” moments that help us see you and others more realistically. Go with us, help us stay focused. Give us wisdom, insight and understanding for those things that break Your heart. Then show us how we can carry out what You would have us do to resolve the broken hearts of others by “carrying them” to You or simply providing a meal. In Jesus Name, Amen

“SOMETHING IN JOHN”

The Good News!

There is that certain someone in our life that does not agree with our faith, does profess Christ or acknowledge Him in their heart and certainly does not walk with integrity. But for some reason that perplexes us, they keep asking provoking, almost mocking questions. They want to be where we are, doing whatever we are doing. They come close enough to watch us but not close enough to accept Christ in us. At least, not yet.

I’m struck with this thought as I read the familiar story in Mark of John the Baptist ministry of “paving the way for the One who comes after me” coming to horrible end.

Mark 6, The Message

17-20 Herod was the one who had ordered the arrest of John, put him in chains, and sent him to prison at the nagging of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. For John had provoked Herod by naming his relationship with Herodias “adultery.” Herodias, smoldering with hate, wanted to kill him, but didn’t dare because Herod was in awe of John. Convinced that he was a holy man, he gave him special treatment. Whenever he listened to him he was miserable with guilt—and yet he couldn’t stay away. Something in John kept pulling him back.

“Something in John kept pulling him back.” That “something” is SOMEONE who was living in John. That Someone was Herod’s Creator. That Someone was the only One who could satisfy the longing of his heart, mind and soul.

The question we must stop and ask ourselves daily is am I allowing Christ who lives in me to have full reign of my heart, mind and soul so that others are drawn, not to me, but to Jesus the Christ living in me? Is there something in us that keeps pulling them back?

10690115_10152741859166718_8587319898766647855_n

Dear Heavenly Father, There must be less of me and more of you in me. Forgive me when I go ahead of You, speak too soon or not enough, or fall behind. Lead us on, in Your Name, for Your Glory. May others be drawn to You. Help us be aware of those moments in time when someone is being pulled into Your love, grace and mercy. Give us boldness and courage to point the way. We pray for those who are being tortured and beheaded today because of their faith in You. I know You are with them…even into Glory. We pray for their families to remain strong and focused on You. We pray for our enemies to lay the sword down.
In Jesus Name, Amen

SIMPLE, UNCOMPLICATED MINISTRY – JESUS

The Good News

Bigger is better! Pull out all the stops! Do what no one else has done! Make it as exciting as possible to draw a crowd! Then the crew goes to work to do just that. Busyness ensues and overwhelms those “in charge” of the operation. The original purpose is lost in all the details, follow ups, phone calls, no shows. Plan B replaces plan A and is quickly followed by plan C. Then someone, usually a low on the totem pole worker bee, asks, “Now, why are we doing this?”

This happens on the work place, during family projects, and, painfully in God’s church. There, I wrote it…in print. Our humanness and leanings to world thinking takes over and the real mission and purpose gets lost in the busyness. Relationships are marred. Evil’s schemes to hinder the cause of Christ wins…for a little while. Then we are reminded of Jesus’ words, his model for pure, unadulterated ministry.

Mark 6, The Message

The Twelve
7-8 Jesus called the Twelve to him, and sent them out in pairs. He gave them authority and power to deal with the evil opposition. He sent them off with these instructions:

8-9 “Don’t think you need a lot of extra equipment for this. You are the equipment. No special appeals for funds. Keep it simple.

10 “And no luxury inns. Get a modest place and be content there until you leave.

11 “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.”

12-13 Then they were on the road. They preached with joyful urgency that life can be radically different; right and left they sent the demons packing; they brought wellness to the sick, anointing their bodies, healing their spirits.

Are you having an ah-ha moment? I am. Evil does NOT win in the end for Jesus has already conquered it. Evil is not greater than the Spirit who lives in us. Evil is not powerful. In fact, evil has only one simple method to get at us and uses it over and over. The attacks come when we think we are more important than the mission, when we allow no time to get our “marching orders” from the Father each morning, when we fill every minute of our lives with details with inexhaustible to do lists, leaving no margin for rest and reflection. In other words, he hits harder when we are tireder. Believe me, I am one of them. I confess that openly. I repent and begin again to think more simply, moving with the unforced rhythms of His grace and mercy. Peace floods my soul when I do.

And guess what…Jesus doesn’t need you to accomplish His ministry, wherever that is, You need Him. He puts us in places that are hard enough to depend on Him, learn from Him and grow deeper in love with Him. We can help others only as HE helps us. Sometimes WE are the “others” that get help and are blessed. Mm.

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray my mistakes and confession helps someone else today who is struggling under a pile of details and self-expectations. You make the load lighter. We depend and trust in You alone. Thank you, dear Jesus for giving us these words of warning and teaching. Go with us. Bring us peace as we pour out our “stuff of life” at your feet. We are more than conquerors with You in control. In Jesus Name, Amen
