FROM CREATION TO CORRUPTION TO CATASTROPHE

Let’s go over this again…for understanding…
Creation: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”
(Genesis 1:1)

Corruption: “But you shall not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. For in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17).

From perfection…
For a while, things were perfect in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve lived in a beautiful garden (planted especially for them by God). They could eat of any tree in Eden, except one. This first couple had a perfect relationship with their Creator, a perfect marriage and a perfect place to live. The animals, which Adam ruled over, got along perfectly. But something obviously corrupted this “very good” world, turning it into the world we see today, which is full of sickness and death.

To imperfection …
Adam and Eve both knew they could eat from any tree in the Garden of Eden except the one known as the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.” God had forbidden them to eat of it, telling them that if they ate of it, on that day, “dying, you shall die” (the literal Hebrew used).

The devil, a real being, had taken the form of a serpent. He knew what God had said, but he caused Eve to question God’s words by asking, “Did God say you weren’t to eat of any tree of the garden?” and then lying, “You won’t really die.” Eve believed the serpent, rather than God, and ate the forbidden fruit.

Then she gave some to Adam, who hadn’t been deceived by the serpent but ate it willingly (1 Timothy 2:14). This caused them both to immediately die spiritually (be separated from God) and to begin to die physically, on that very day.

Because of his disobedience (sin), all of his descendants (you and I) are born with sin in our nature. Because of Adam’s sin, our bodies will die. Because of Adam’s sin, God cursed His precious creation. The world we see today, while reflecting God’s original creation, has been corrupted by sin.

Catastrophe: “And every living thing which was on the face of the earth was destroyed, from man to cattle, and to the creeping things, and the fowls of the heavens. And they were destroyed from the earth, and only Noah was left, and those that were with him in the ark” (Genesis 7:23).

God created a perfect world in six normal-length days (Genesis 1–2), but Adam disobeyed God’s command not to eat the forbidden fruit and brought corruption and death into the world (Romans 5:12). Adam’s sin passed to his children, his children’s children and so on. This brings us to the third “C” of history found in Genesis 6-9.

As time went by, people began to invent new machines, explore new places, try new ideas. Because their hearts were wicked, though, they did things that displeased their Creator. They didn’t listen to their ancestor Adam when he would have told them what had happened in the Garden of Eden, and how they needed to obey and worship only the Lord.

This grieved God so much that He determined to destroy everything with the breath of life in it. Only one righteous man, Noah, found favor in His eyes. God told Noah that He would send a great flood to judge the entire globe by covering it with water.

“Make a boat from resinous wood and seal it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior.” Genesis 6:14, NLT

“‘Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing. Everything on earth will die! But I solemnly swear to keep you safe in the boat, with your wife and your sons and their wives.” Genesis 6:17, NLT

God provided a way for Noah, his wife, his three sons, their wives, the land animals and birds (the fish and other sea creatures could survive in the water) to survive this catastrophe by building a huge Ark.

Noah and his family worked on the Ark for many years, probably warning those around them about God’s judgment that was coming. Nobody but his family believed. When they finished building, God brought two of every animal (including dinosaurs!) and seven of some, to the Ark.

The one who was to come …
The good news of this sad tale is that God did not abandon His creation after Adam’s sin! He promised that one day He would send a Savior, the “seed of a woman,” to “bruise” (crush, break) the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15). This Savior, Jesus Christ, was indeed born of a woman without a human father, about 4,000 years later. Christ died on the Cross, and rose again to save His people from their sins, so indeed dealing a death-blow to (crushing the head of) the devil (serpent).

Why Noah? Because “Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.” The relationship Noah had with God was consistent. Consistency. A sermon in itself…

Dear Heavenly Father, We admire Noah in Your Story of grace and mercy extended to him because he loved you in a continuous relationship with you. He did exactly what You said. We give you our desire and decision to be committed to be and do exactly what You command us to be and do. May Your kingdom come, Your will be done in all our lives, for Your glory forever and ever, In Jesus Name, Amen.

BREAKING GOD’S HEART

“This is the history of the descendants of Adam. When God created people, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them ‘human'”. Genesis 5:1-2, NLT

It seemed the longer they lived, the more God‘s heart was broken by their sinfulness and selfishness. “In the future, they will live no more than 120 years.” Genesis 6:3, NLT

“Now the LORD observed the extent of the people’s wickedness, and he saw that all their thoughts were consistently and totally evil. So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them. It broke his heart.” Genesis 6:5-6, NLT

It broke His heart. That thought alone brings tears to my eyes.

We pray often, “Lord, break my heart of what break’s your heart, so I will see and be more of what you what me to be.” This passage breaks my heart with God. It was His original intent to create a perfect world to live for the humans He created to have a relationship with Him and to simply love Him back. Sounds so simple until self, “having it all my way” over God’s design is humans’ way of putting God, our Creator and Lord…last on the list of love, care and adoration. Heartbreaking, to say the least.

We still do it. What is on your list to accomplish and Who will you begin the day with today?

“And the LORD said, ‘I will completely wipe out this human race that I have created. Yes, and I will destroy all the animals and birds, too. I am sorry I ever made them.'” Genesis 6:7, NLT

“BUT Noah found favor with the LORD.” Genesis 6:8, NLT

FAVOR…what does that look like to our God? What stopped him from destroying the world He had created and everything in it? Favor is being right with God…”Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless man living on earth at the time. He consistently followed God’s will and enjoyed a close relationship with him.” Genesis 6:9-11, NLT

The key words that leap from the page to gain the favor of God are righteousness and relationship! Consistently right with God, following His will because of a close RELATIONSHIP with him. Noah had it all. He had God. He had favor with God.

Oh, Lord, that’s what I want..favor with You because of our relationship.

Image
Dear Heavenly Father, YOUR story tells us what breaks your heart. Your Story also tells us that being right with You is to have a close relationship with You. Noah was not perfect, but perfectly and consistently close to You. We seek to consistently find favor with You as well. You stir our hearts with Your Story every time. Thank you for consistently loving us…not matter what. Thank you for Jesus, Your Son, who broke down the barriers for man to relate to You forever and ever. We pray we do not break your heart. Help us, Lord. In Jesus Name, Amen

HOW LONG AS IT BEEN?

HOW LONG AS IT BEEN?.

HOW LONG AS IT BEEN?

It seems that is the first question people as of a person struggling, in trouble or just depressed. “How long has it been?” We go to a doctor with an ailment and he asks, “How long has it been?” I am stuck on this question as I read the “tail end” of God’s story of Cain and how He dealt with him and his descendants to the last verses that bring us back to Adam.

“Adam slept with his wife again, and she gave brith to another son. she named him Seth, for she said, ‘God has granted me another son in place of Abel, the one Cain killed.’ When Seth grew up he had a son and named him Enosh. It was during his lifetime that people first began to worship the LORD.” Genesis 4:25-26, NLT

STOP! I was wondering why it took so long to begin to worship the LORD?! This is the first time it is mentioned. God created the world and the people in it…and it wasn’t until Enosh’s generation that took the time to worship, to thank Him and give him praise?

How long has it been for us? Do we live a life of worship, always grateful, always thinking of God first? How long has it been since we gave our whole heart, mind and soul over to Him to use as He sees appropriate for His Kingdom? How long has it been since you just took the time to chat with Him? How long has it been since you were still before God and just listened?

STOP! Do it now. BE with Him now. Nothing is more important. Everything will change in your thinking, your attitude and your behaving. It does for me. This is worship.

How long has it been?

I think of the old, old song my parents sang as a quartet with my aunt and uncle, (The Kellerby Quartet), “How long has it been?” and I weep a little, in joy, for their lives and remembering. My mom went to be with the Lord on this day in 2009. My aunt and uncle went long before her. My dad lives with me and is a constant reminder. Maybe that is why I am reminded to never give up on my chats with my Lord each morning. He is life to me. This is worship.

In Jesus Name, Amen

And now I’m singing…

“How Long Has It Been”

How long has it been since you talked with the Lord
And told him your heart’s hid in secrets?
How long since you prayed?
How long since you stayed on your knees till the light shone through?

How long has it been since your mind felt at ease?
How long since your heart knew no burden?
Can you call him your friend?
How long has it been since you knew that he cared for you?

How long has it been since you knelt by your bed
And prayed to the Lord up in heaven?
How long since you knew that he’d answer you
And would keep you the long night through?

How long has it been since you woke with the dawn
And felt this day is worth living?
Can you call him your friend?
How long has it been since you knew that he cared for you?..

In Jesus Name, Amen

TOUGH STUFF

TOUGH STUFF

Bad attitudes stem from love of self. Selfishness breeds envy, pride, misplaced fear and jealously. In Cain’s case, it led to death…of his own brother. God asks, “Where is your brother?” after Cain murders him. This reminds us of what God asked Adam, the first generation to turn their back on God and take the first bite of sin, “Where are you?” as He walked through His once perfectly created world.

Cain, the farmer, is punished by God. The land he worked so hard with is taken away. Who Cain thought he was, is taken away from him. “You are hereby banished from the ground you have defiled with your brother’s blood. No longer will it yield abundant crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless fugitive on the earth, constantly wandering from place to place.” Genesis 4:11-12, NLT

No farm. No family. Banished. But protected. He is still God’s creation. His succeeding generations produce inventors and craftsmen. But he is set apart from his original family.

Our sin. We think only affects us. Nope. It affects and concerns everyone around us. If we really thought about the consequences of sin, maybe there would be less sin. But alas, sin is self. And Self seems to take precedence over all our thinking.

Image

Oh, Lord, give us wisdom, insight and understanding. Thank you for salvation from self and sin. We are a helpless, hopeless people without Christ and the work on the Cross for our sin. Thank you for unconditional love, grace and mercy, the One and Only way back to you. In Jesus Name, and by the power of His shed blood, we pray, Amen.

GOD CREATES A SECOND GENERATION

GOD CREATES A SECOND GENERATION

We have all heard the phrase from our parents, “I hope you grow up and have kids that are just like you!” This is usually said in the heat of frustration at situations of disobedience or not getting the homework or other tasks accomplished. Or it might be said in the midst of moodiness on the part of kids…or their parents. Either way it is said.

And guess what…we do have kids fairly close to behaving the way we did as kids. Second generation. Third generation. It happens. It’s happened since Adam and Eve had the second generation of boys who had to face the temptation to sin and make choices to follow sin or follow God. I wonder if God said to Adam and Eve in his frustration at them eating the forbidden fruit…”I hope you have kids just like you!” Actually God KNEW they would have kids just like them when sin entered His perfectly created world and the “kids” yielded to it.

There is a way. Get your heart right with God and subdue sin!

“When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain was a farmer. At harvest time Cain brought to the LORD a gift of his farm produce, while Abel brought several choice lambs from the best of his flock. The LORD accepted Abel’s offering, but he did not accept Cain’s. This made Cain very angry and dejected.”

“‘Why are you so angry?’ the LORD asked him. ‘Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you respond in the right way. But if you refuse to respond correctly, then watch out! Sin is waiting to attack and destroy you, and you must subdue it.'”.
Genesis 4:2-7, NLT

Our attitude about God has a lot to do with our ability to subdue sin. What is our attitude? Are we doing everything we can for the church without a thought to pleasing God? Is that our “Cain-ish sacrifice”? OR is our heart following God, letting him tell us when to join Him, what to do, when to do it, helping others when he gives us the opportunity…ALL out of love for Him, with a grateful, humble heart, with a dedicated desire to please HIM? Duty or devotion? It’s another choice. What does God want?

I think about this as I read Cain’s attempt to give with a poor response to God’s teaching.

“Subdue sin…or it will destroy you.” There’s more to this story.
Image
Dear Heavenly Father, We must get our hearts, minds and souls in focus with Your ways, Your perfect will for us, and with Your way of thinking so that we will behave in ways that please and honor You. Help us, Lord. Make us holy before you. What can we give You that you do not already have? All of ourselves. I give you my heart, mind and soul this morning. Have Your way with me. In Jesus Name, Amen
